Lower Your Voice – Chapter 48

Chapter 48 — Very scared? Or… does it hurt a lot?

“Be good, don’t be nervous. Just sit down gently.”

Xie Hejing’s gaze settled on Nan Xu, his voice low and tender, like a soft breeze wrapping around her senses.

Standing still, Nan Xu felt her heart racing wildly from nervousness, but little by little, it began to calm.

She lowered her eyes, and before she knew it, her legs were carrying her toward him.

As she moved, Xie Hejing’s eyes never once left her—dark, steady, and filled with quiet intent.

His left hand rested open on the sofa, palm up. His nails were neatly trimmed, the skin smooth and healthy.

The closer she got, the more clearly she could smell that familiar scent of cedar mingled with something faintly damp and fresh. Her breath hitched for a moment.

But when she turned her head slightly, the scent would fade again—teasing her, luring her forward.

In the center of his palm was a small mole, light brown, as if marking the very spot she was meant to reach.

Nan Xu finally stood before the sofa. Just one more step, and she would be there.

Xie Hejing’s gaze dropped to that mole.

“Do you see it?” he asked.

She nodded. “I see it.”

“Cover it.”

His voice was rich and velvety, like aged red wine—thick and intoxicating, drawing her into its warmth until she could hardly think.

At that moment, the faint mole was no longer just a mark—it was calling to her, waiting for her.

Nan Xu whispered softly, “…Okay.”

Xie Hejing raised his other hand and rested it lightly on her waist. The pad of his thumb brushed her shirt in an absent, unhurried motion, sending tingling heat all through her body.

The warmth of his palm spread quickly, flooding her with sensation. His grip tightened slightly, and beneath the gentleness was a quiet strength she couldn’t resist.

It felt like a silent command—one she couldn’t disobey.

She took another step forward.

The room was utterly still, filled only with a heavy, charged tension that clung to the air.

Her knees sank slowly into the sofa. A faint ringing filled her ears, her heart pounding fiercely again.

She bent her knees, shifting forward bit by bit. The fabric beneath her yielded softly, deepening with each movement, as if holding its breath for what was to come.

Beside her ear, Xie Hejing’s breathing grew heavier, edged with a restrained hunger. Each exhale brushed against her neck, making her flinch and draw in slightly.

She bit her lip. Every inch she moved felt languid, cinematic—like the moment a shy girl in a film finally breaks free of her fears and takes that bold, irreversible step. Beautiful and fragile all at once.

At last, she was right above that little mole. The distance between them was so small she could feel the faint heat rising from beneath her.

The fabric of her clothes brushed lightly over it—then lifted away again in an instant.

“Hiss…” Xie Hejing drew in a sharp breath.

Nan Xu tilted her head, her gaze meeting Xie Hejing’s. His eyes were deep and profound, as if lurking with endless and boundless desire.

The room remained unlit; the only light source was the glow seeping from the frosted bathroom door. It struck the far wall, leaving only faint illumination by the time it reached the two of them.

The expressions and faces between them became somewhat blurry, but the sensations beneath her and in his palm were extraordinarily clear.

The position had held for a while, and Nan Xu’s legs were beginning to tremble.

Xie Hejing didn’t rush her, slowly waiting for her to break through to the next step, and then the step after that.

A casual smile hung on his face, and a rare hint of haziness was in his eyes.

His beloved muse was finally willing to surrender herself into his hands.

Nan Xu held her breath, her fingernails digging into her palms, quickly pressing out several crescent-shaped marks. Several emotions wrestled within her heart, but ultimately impulse gained the upper hand.

She finally made up her mind, sinking her body downward. Her knees finally let go of their supporting weight and slid apart.

She dropped down hard.

In this moment, Xie Hejing experienced a phrase for the first time in his life:

——“A delicate darling in the palm of one’s hand”

The delicate feel and warm temperature caused Xie Hejing’s entire body to tense up; the part that had just subsided once again showed a tendency to revive.

An extreme heat, bordered by his palm, frantically spread toward them both.

Separated by a layer of fabric so thin it was almost negligible, his fingertips gently eased, rubbed, bent…

Nan Xu gripped his waistband, her fingertips white, her entire body burning hot and trembling.

Xie Hejing quietly lifted the corner of his mouth, sat up straight, and applied slight force with his left hand. Bending his arm inward, he pulled her closer to his front.

Startled by the sudden movement, Nan Xu’s hands left the waistband and rested on Xie Hejing’s left forearm.

The bulging veins brushed against Nan Xu; she could feel the intimidating pressure radiating from Xie Hejing.

She released his arm and looked up at him, a thin layer of moisture floating in her eyes, making her look pitiable yet utterly captivating.

Xie Hejing placed his right hand on Nan Xu’s back, lightly patting it, and asked, “What is it? Are you very nervous? Very scared? Or… does it hurt a lot?”

Nan Xu shook her head. She couldn’t explain why her eyes were wet.

She could only reply, “It doesn’t hurt.”

Xie Hejing raised an eyebrow. That meant she was nervous or scared.

He reached for the nearby phone and slid to unlock it: “I’ll put on a song for you to ease the tension.”

“What song?” Nan Xu asked.

Xie Hejing said, “You’ll know in a minute.”

He tapped the screen a few times casually.

Instantly, a sensuous, lingering music flowed between the two of them. The soothing, winding melody, like a vine, gently entwined them both.

Both were lost in the intoxicating atmosphere. Xie Hejing’s fingers kept moving in caresses, and he rested his head in the crook of Nan Xu’s neck.

“Baby, can you wriggle gently in my palm?”

His tone was almost a bewitching whisper, tantalizing her bit by bit.

Nan Xu’s breathing gradually became steady, and her vision cleared, yet she couldn’t stop herself from wanting to close her legs.

Xie Hejing stood in the middle, forcefully compelling her to continue indulging.

Nan Xu’s cheeks were completely flushed, and she lowered her eyes in a panic, burying her head in Xie Hejing’s neck, her fingers unconsciously clutching at his clothes.

Feeling Nan Xu’s shy and dependent movement, a smile emerged at the corner of Xie Hejing’s mouth. He put down his phone, and his right arm gently wrapped around her body, pulling her a little tighter.

“Good girl, try it out, find a rhythm you like.”

The music flowed continuously in the enclosed space, pushing the atmosphere to its peak, time and time again.

“Little by little.”

Xie Hejing couldn’t help but murmur a lyric.

The tone was like a whisper, carrying a hint of seduction, the final note sinking slightly, but it hooked Nan Xu’s heartstrings, making her heartbeat become even more uncontrolled.

Nan Xu’s breathing grew rapid and disorderly; every breath became incredibly difficult.

She swallowed repeatedly, took a deep breath with the song, and summoned the courage to move a little.

The movement was tiny, like a tentative probe, and yet like accumulating strength.

Xie Hejing’s eye corner twitched, and the strength in his hand suddenly increased. Nan Xu bit down hard on her lower lip, refusing to make any sound.

“Good girl, that’s great,” Xie Hejing kissed the side of her neck. “Keep going, okay?”

The words of encouragement made Nan Xu’s moist eyes appear somewhat confused, but then she nodded, gently rubbing along with Xie Hejing’s movements and rhythm.

Both their breaths grew more and more urgent.

The next second, Nan Xu felt something scorching hot press against her leg.

She was about to ask a question, but Xie Hejing didn’t give her the chance to speak, directly pressing the back of Nan Xu’s head and kissing her fiercely.

As if to vent the desires that had built up to an explosive point through this channel.

His tongue pried open Nan Xu’s lips, swept past her teeth, and wildly tangled with her own tongue, their breaths mingling in their mouths.

Neither could tell whose breathing was more rapid, both were immersed in this extremely lingering kiss.

After a long while, they finally broke apart. Xie Hejing’s hand gradually became slick, and he moved, seemingly wanting to separate the layer of cloth.

But Nan Xu pressed his hand down: “Not this time.” She sounded somewhat eager and nervous.

Xie Hejing narrowed his eyes, not forcing the issue, only saying, “Then next time, don’t wear this troublesome thing, okay?”

Nan Xu didn’t answer. Xie Hejing leaned closer, intimately rubbing against her ear.

“Don’t be shy. If you’re willing, I can not wear anything either.”

“Don’t be scared, baby, hmm?”

“Follow my lead; I’ll make you happy.”

“…”

Xie Hejing regulated the pressure, from her legs to her hips, and then to her waist, like a massage, and yet like a seduction.

Under the continuous stream of advances, it was already late into the night. The ticking of the clock in the room drilled into Nan Xu’s ears.

Nan Xu leaned against Xie Hejing, her head dizzy, and her body so soft she had no strength left. Sleepiness struck, and she couldn’t help but yawn.

Xie Hejing, however, was still enjoying himself and teased when he heard Nan Xu yawn: “Am I not trying hard enough? How are you already sleepy?”

Afraid that Xie Hejing would “try harder”—and if he went too far, she wouldn’t be able to get up tomorrow—Nan Xu immediately shook her head, her voice clearly a little hoarse: “No, I just don’t have much energy today. I have a lot of work to deal with these past few days.”

At that moment, she was still thinking about work. Xie Hejing’s eyes darkened slightly. “Then don’t go to work anymore. Just stay home. I’ll prepare everything you need. You can save all your energy for this—how does that sound?”

There was a trace of thoughtfulness in his tone, as if even before Nan Xu could respond, he was already planning what to prepare.

But Nan Xu had no intention of agreeing to that. She wanted to go out; even if work kept her so busy she barely had time to breathe, she would rather that than stay home all day.

“No,” she refused firmly.

Xie Hejing raised a brow but didn’t press the issue. Instead, he pulled her closer, focusing entirely on “serving” her.

It wasn’t until he heard her yawn again that he spoke.

“Tired?” he asked.

Resting her head on his shoulder, Nan Xu didn’t even want to move anymore. “Mm, yeah. Sleepy.”

“Looks like your desire for me really isn’t that strong,” he teased.

He’d felt his desire stirring ever since they walked through the door, and it hadn’t subsided—it was only getting stronger. Yet even in that state, as he tended to her, she somehow managed to get sleepy.

Xie Hejing gave a mischievous squeeze, making Nan Xu tense up and curl into his arms with a small protest. “What are you doing?”

“Making sure you’ll remember tonight,” he said softly, “so you don’t wake up tomorrow and forget everything.”

“How could I?” Nan Xu retorted. “I’ll remember.”

Tonight had pushed her past every limit she’d ever known—there was no way she could forget. Maybe she’d even dream about it later.

“Really?” he asked again, sounding doubtful.

Nan Xu nodded firmly.

“Good. Then remember this too.” He took her hand.

Puzzled, Nan Xu looked at him. “Remember what?”

The next second, a familiar heat spread from her palm. Her breath caught. “You—you’re still like this?”

He smiled faintly and explained, “You’re the one who isn’t feeling much desire, not me.”

“And it’s been like this all night.”

Nan Xu’s hand trembled slightly. “Then what are you going to do about it?”

Seeing the worry in her eyes, Xie Hejing curved his lips. “Nan Xu, have a little pity on me. Next time, you can help me—okay?”

“Next time?” Nan Xu’s eyes widened. “What about this time?”

It must be uncomfortable—she’d heard his quiet groans earlier, as if he were in pain.

“This time, I’ll let you off.”

He released her hand, lifted her into his arms, and carried her to the sofa. Unable to resist, he pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.

“I’ll go wash my hands.”

He walked into the bathroom, pushing the door fully open. The light stretched his tall figure into a long, slender silhouette.

He stood before the sink, the sound of running water filling the room as he reached into the basin.

Nan Xu caught sight of the marks on his hand, and her face instantly flushed. She quickly averted her gaze.

Xie Hejing continued washing his hands at an unhurried pace, carefully rubbing his fingertips as if savoring the lingering sensation from earlier.

“I’ll take you back to the main bedroom in a bit,” he said casually.

Almost by reflex, Nan Xu shook her head. “No need, I can go by myself.”

At that, Xie Hejing raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile playing at his lips. “Are you sure? Your legs aren’t weak? Can you even walk?”

What did he mean, she couldn’t walk?

Nan Xu braced her hands against the sofa and tried to stand—but the moment she did, the soreness and lingering heat between her legs made her collapse back onto the cushions.

Unable to help herself, she looked down—and froze. Several faint red handprints marked her thighs.

She sighed inwardly. She’d have to shower again later, and those marks definitely weren’t going to fade anytime soon.

Lying back on the sofa, she covered her face with her hands just as Xie Hejing walked over. She refused to look at him.

Watching his own fingertips, Xie Hejing seemed to recall something. His gaze swept over her flustered expression, and he asked lightly, “Do you want me to help you wash?”

“No!” Nan Xu quickly dropped her hands to protest, then immediately covered her face again.

He chuckled softly, deciding not to tease her further. He’d already pushed her enough tonight—any more and she might actually be scared next time.

“Alright.”

He scooped her up effortlessly and carried her back to the bed in the main bedroom. Before putting her down, he asked one last time, “Are you sure you don’t need me?”

“No!” she bit out through gritted teeth.

That was final. Xie Hejing dropped the thought and instead asked, “Then tell me… did you feel good tonight?”

Ideally, she’d feel so good she wouldn’t be able to stay away from him.

Nan Xu turned her head to the side, her ears reddening.

Even one simple question could make her blush. Amused, Xie Hejing smiled indulgently and changed his phrasing.

“Alright, then—were you happy?”

Seeing that she was about to stay silent again, he leaned closer, his voice laced with mock threat. “If you don’t answer, I’ll make you relive it—so you can think it over properly.”

He started to move toward her, and Nan Xu instantly pulled the blanket over herself in alarm.

“I was happy!” she practically shouted. “Happy—very happy!”

His brows relaxed, and he leaned in again.

“What are you doing? I already said I’m happy!” she squeaked from under the blanket, half afraid he’d actually continue.

But instead, Xie Hejing only bent down, pulled the blanket back just enough, and pressed a light kiss to her lips. Then he drew back.

“Then… good night.”

“…”

His tone was so gentle it caught her off guard. For a moment, Nan Xu just stared—then her wariness melted into a soft smile.

“Good night.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 47

Chapter 47 — Nan Xu, the night’s still long

The car stopped downstairs, and the two of them walked home side by side.

Xie Hejing naturally reached out and took Nan Xu’s hand, their fingers interlacing—his grip neither too tight nor too loose.

Nan Xu didn’t pull away, she even gave a gentle squeeze in return. A faint smile lingered between their eyes.

Under the streetlights, their shadows leaned close to each other, stretching softly along the ground.

When they reached the door, Xie Hejing stepped ahead to enter the passcode.

Casually, he asked, “How was the company team dinner?”

He took off his jacket and hung it up.

Nan Xu set down her bag, slipped on her house slippers, and walked inside. “It was nice,” she said. “The atmosphere was good, and I actually learned a few things.”

As Xie Hejing turned to close the door, he noticed Nan Xu’s pale pink handbag hanging next to his jacket. The strap dangled naturally, brushing lightly against the edge of his coat.

It was an ordinary scene—yet it made him smile unconsciously.

He had bought that bag for her and left it in the master bedroom closet, expecting she’d only find it later. He hadn’t thought she’d start using it so soon.

Not only that—her clothes, her shoes… almost everything she wore now had been chosen by him, carefully matched and prepared.

And now, all those things had been accepted by her, following her wherever she went.

A quiet, indescribable satisfaction rose in his chest.

Noticing that he had gone still, Nan Xu walked over and saw him staring blankly at the bag.

“What’s wrong?” she asked. “I changed outfits this morning and thought this bag looked nice, so I used it. Is there something wrong with it?”

“No,” he replied, turning away slightly. “You just said you learned something from the company team dinner?”

He paused for a moment, as if already guessing what she meant earlier when she’d made that cryptic comment in the car.

“Come on,” he said, his tone teasing. “What did you learn?”

Nan Xu bit her lip. During the second half of the event, Sister Zhang had been enthusiastically teaching her and another female colleague how to make men ‘please’ them.

To be honest, Nan Xu had no real experience in that area, so she’d listened without much reaction. Her colleague, however, had been full of curiosity, kept discussing it enthusiastically with Sister Zhang.

Nan Xu sat beside them, quietly absorbing bits and pieces of the conversation.

But now, standing in front of Xie Hejing, she couldn’t bring herself to repeat it word for word. Her face warmed with embarrassment.

She mumbled, “Just… some useful stuff, that’s all.”

Seeing her expression, Xie Hejing’s suspicion was confirmed. “So, you learned how to get a little more intimate with me, didn’t you?”

“Cough—cough—” Nan Xu choked on the sip of warm water she hadn’t yet swallowed, coughing uncontrollably.

Xie Hejing chuckled helplessly and patted her back. “What are you getting so worked up for?”

“How did you even know?” Nan Xu said hoarsely once she managed to breathe again.

How could he always guess everything so accurately? Sometimes she wondered if he had bugged her somehow.

“You make it too obvious,” he said, tilting his chin toward her. “Nan Xu, your thoughts are written all over your face.”

Frowning, Nan Xu touched her own cheek.

Was it really that obvious?

She didn’t think so.

It was certainly because Xie Hejing was so good at reading her.

“What exactly did you discuss? Were there any positions you liked?” Xie Hejing asked again.

In reality, most of the conversation was between Sister Zhang and another female colleague, and Nan Xu was mostly just listening in.

The main topic of those two was how the female colleague’s husband could please her, and Nan Xu certainly couldn’t repeat that. So, she chose a safe answer and said, “Yes, just hugging is enough.”

Hugging…

Xie Hejing nodded thoughtfully, his gaze gradually falling to Nan Xu’s legs.

“What are you looking at?” Nan Xu swallowed and asked.

“I’m considering the possibility of using hands while hugging,” Xie Hejing said with a serious expression.

Nan Xu’s throat tightened. How could Xie Hejing connect the two? She quickly said, “No, what I mean is just a simple hug. I prefer that position.”

“Alright then, come here,” Xie Hejing slightly raised his hand. “Let’s hug first. I’m going to take a shower later. Which room do you want to start in?”

“I…” Nan Xu bit her lip.

Sure enough, Xie Hejing was right. Nan Xu could talk about it, but when it came time to actually act on it, she would shrink back.

Xie Hejing didn’t give her a chance to hesitate. He walked over to Nan Xu in a few steps and reached out, scooping her up and holding her in one arm, letting her sit in the crook of his elbow.

Nan Xu’s body swayed, feeling suddenly lifted high. She wanted to get down, but Xie Hejing wouldn’t let her have her way.

Nan Xu could only remain obediently in Xie Hejing’s arms.

Noticing that Xie Hejing was heading toward the master bedroom, Nan Xu called out, “Wait a moment, didn’t you say you were going to take a shower?”

“I know. I’ll take you to the master bedroom to shower first. I guess you don’t want to shower with me right now. Or I can take you to the guest room,” Xie Hejing smiled. “Let’s go.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he lifted Nan Xu slightly and turned to head toward the guest room.

Nan Xu’s heart instantly leaped. She braced herself on Xie Hejing’s shoulder and stopped him: “I’m not going there. I’ll shower in the master bedroom.”

“Didn’t you say we should take things slowly?”

“Yes, I did, but your shrinking back always makes me want to speed things up. Nan Xu, if you keep hiding, I’ll go straight to the last step. Don’t cry then.”

Nan Xu was startled. How could someone be so amenable one second and so forceful the next?

Not hearing Nan Xu’s reply, his tone softened: “If you really want to take it slow, you can’t retreat, understand?”

Nan Xu opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but then realized that since things had already come to this point, trying to avoid it would just seem pretentious—she might as well go with the flow.

“I understand.”

The fragrance of Nan Xu was all over Xie Hejing, more intense than ever before. Thinking about what they were about to do, a surge of passion rose up.

As they walked, Nan Xu would rub against him, and the temperature between them gradually rose.

Stopping at the door of the master bathroom, Xie Hejing paused and lowered his head. He was truly at his limit.

Nan Xu was still in his arms, unsure what had gotten into him all of a sudden—he’d frozen completely. She shifted her still-free leg a little and asked softly:

“What’s wrong?”

Her small movement made Xie Hejing’s nerves jolt. He muttered hoarsely, “Don’t move.”

Panting, he finally set her down.

Hearing his deep, heavy breathing, Nan Xu frowned slightly. “Why do you sound so tired? Am I really that heavy?”

Xie Hejing took a step forward, closing the distance until Nan Xu’s back nearly touched the bathroom door.

She flinched, lifting her gaze to meet his. His dark eyes were locked on her, and the intensity in them instantly made her tense.

Sure, she’d told herself not to back away—but they weren’t seriously about to shower together, were they? She hesitated, her voice small. “Why are you still here? Aren’t you going to take your shower?”

His Adam’s apple bobbed hard, desire surging up only to be forcibly restrained. It felt like he was spending every bit of self-control he had on this girl.

Clenching his jaw, he exhaled slowly, then leaned down to brush a kiss against the corner of her lips. “What’s there to be afraid of? I just wanted to kiss you.”

Nan Xu’s hands clenched instinctively. Her gut told her that look in his eyes just now hadn’t been about just a kiss.

She’d seen many sides of Xie Hejing, but never that one—the kind that looked one second away from losing control.

“After you finish showering, wait for me in my room,” he said, voice low. “Give me about an hour and a half to calm down.”

He paused, then added with quiet menace, “If you’re not in the guest room when I come out… Nan Xu, trust me—you don’t want to hear what comes next.”

The warning in his tone made Nan Xu nod quickly, not daring to argue.

Then something clicked. An hour and a half?

Her showers only took forty minutes at most. She tilted her head up and asked, “Brother, are you really that meticulous? Why does it take you longer to shower than me?”

Xie Hejing braced one hand against the bathroom door behind her, his teeth grinding faintly. “I have things to do.”

“What things?”

Is he doing a full-body skincare routine or something?

Nan Xu hesitated, wondering if she should do one too. That would mean putting on a face mask… Did Xie Hejing even prepare one for her?

“You really want to know?” he murmured, his breath growing heavier.

Before she could react, he caught her earlobe between his teeth, stopping her from pulling away. His voice was low and rough, whispering something that made her entire face flush scarlet from her ears to her cheeks.

Xie Hejing had never said something like that to her before. Hearing it now left her completely tongue-tied.

“You… you…”

She couldn’t even get a full sentence out.

A faint, husky laugh escaped his lips. “I won’t close the door later. If you want to watch—come in.”

Then, before leaving, he bit her lower lip lightly.

Nan Xu couldn’t help glancing at Xie Hejing’s retreating figure. Every inch of him radiated that reckless, shameless energy of his.

Even that line he’d said to her earlier, his tone had been laced with unmistakable anticipation.

She quickly shook her head, trying to shake off the memory of everything that had just happened.

This time, she showered very slowly—deliberately stalling—until nearly an hour and a half had passed before stepping out of the bathroom.

By her estimate, Xie Hejing should’ve been done around now too.

Cautiously, she pushed open the door to the guest room. She didn’t dare look toward the bed first—her eyes darted straight to the floor.

Then she heard it—the steady patter of running water from the bathroom. Only the light in there was on, bright and white, while the rest of the room was dim.

And the bathroom door—whether by coincidence or Xie Hejing’s design—was frosted glass, hazy enough to blur the details but not enough to hide the silhouette inside.

Her gaze landed on the doorknob. That’s when it hit her—he hadn’t been joking earlier. The door really wasn’t locked.

Which meant right now, he was…

The thought made her heart skip. She hurried to the sofa, sat down facing the wall, and began her silent self-reflection.

“Forget it, forget it, just forget it…” she whispered to herself, over and over.

She tried to think of anything else to drown out her thoughts. But the sound of the water was right there, steady and relentless, slipping straight into her ears—accompanied by the memory of what he’d said earlier.

This wasn’t something she could just will herself to forget.

She pressed her forehead against the wall, then even rested her cheek against it, hoping the cool surface would bring her temperature—and her mind—down.

About half an hour later, the water finally stopped. Nan Xu exhaled in relief, feeling her restless thoughts finally start to settle.

Then the door opened. Xie Hejing stepped out in a bathrobe.

Nan Xu muttered under her breath, “Finally. You’re out.”

At least now, there was no more water sound to tempt her imagination.

He caught her words and smirked. “Sounds like you’ve been waiting—looking forward to what’s coming next, huh?”

“I wasn’t!” she denied instantly.

But somehow, his teasing words made her eyes flick toward his hands.

Noticing her gaze, Xie Hejing walked closer and asked, “Want to use the same hand as me?”

“The same hand?” Nan Xu echoed, confused.

He didn’t answer directly. Instead, his tone grew lower. “Guess whose face I was thinking of in the shower. Want to know how long it lasted? Did you open the door to check?”

That string of questions suddenly clicked in her head—connecting back to what he’d said first.

The same hand?

Was he implying… that tonight, they’d be using the same one?

“N-no… I don’t want to,” she stammered.

Xie Hanjing wasn’t annoyed, and went a step further, saying: “Then take a guess which hand I used. If you guess right, I won’t use that same hand tonight.”

Her long lashes fluttered wildly, like they’d been startled. Nan Xu’s lips parted slightly, hands and feet tense as she tried to respond to Xie Hejing’s question.

“I’m not guessing,” she said, voice trembling.

Xie Hejing studied her with lazy amusement, his tone full of teasing warmth. “No? Then we’ll just use both hands tonight, Nan Xu. The night’s still long.”

She instantly caught the meaning behind his words, panic flashing through her eyes. Her gaze dropped to his hands—one of those hands had just been…

Nan Xu didn’t dare think any further. Her face felt like it was on fire.

She could only stare hard, trying to figure out which hand had been “clean.”

Xie Hejing, ever so casual, lifted both hands right in front of her for inspection.

But how could she tell? No matter how she looked, they seemed exactly the same.

“Nan Xu,” he said, a hint of playfulness in his voice, “I’ll give you one more minute. If you still don’t answer, we’ll just start.”

The words sent her pulse racing even faster. Her brows knit tightly together in panic.

“Five.”

“Four.”

“Three.”

“Two.”

“…!”

By the time he reached the final count, Nan Xu was practically sweating. At the very last second, she blurted out, “The right one! It’s the right hand, isn’t it?”

Her eyes locked on him anxiously, heart caught in her throat.

Xie Hejing’s lips curved into a bright, almost mischievous smile. “Then we’ll use the left.”

“That’s not fair! Was I right or not?” she asked in frustration.

The smile deepened, pure mischief glinting in his eyes. “I’ll tell you tomorrow.”

There wasn’t a hint in his tone whether she’d guessed correctly or not.

“You— you’re impossible! You’re awful,” Nan Xu burst out, glaring at him.

Xie Hejing’s gaze darkened, his voice low and smooth as velvet. “If I were really that awful,” he murmured, stepping closer and tugging lightly on the belt of her robe with his left hand, “I wouldn’t have let you walk out of the bedroom earlier.”

He leaned closer, his tone calm and dangerous. “If we’d started back then, you wouldn’t have the strength to argue with me now.”

Nan Xu was so taken aback she couldn’t form a reply. Her chest rose and fell with agitation as she searched for something to fight back with—but came up empty.

“You… you’re going too far. One day, I’ll— I’ll deal with you!” she stammered, grasping for a word strong enough.

Deal with him.

The phrase made Xie Hejing tilt his head slightly, biting back a laugh. If he laughed now, she’d only get angrier.

But instead of letting it slide, he said with quiet amusement, “I’ll be waiting.”

The clock on the wall ticked past eleven. Xie Hejing cleared his throat and sat down on the sofa beside her.

Seeing Nan Xu still frozen in place, refusing to move closer, he reminded softly, “Did you forget what I told you earlier? If you keep avoiding me…”

“I’m not! I’m not avoiding you,” Nan Xu cut in quickly, taking a deep breath before exhaling slowly. “Just— let me mentally prepare myself first.”

He chuckled. “Didn’t you already do that in the shower?”

“I did,” she admitted, “but it didn’t work.”

Even though she’d told herself over and over while showering that there was nothing to be afraid of—that Xie Hejing would never hurt her—her heart still pounded wildly now that the moment had come. No amount of logic could calm it down.

“Come sit and relax,” Xie Hejing said, patting the sofa beside him.

Nan Xu nodded. “Okay.”

She walked over and was just about to sit next to him when his voice came again. “Not there.”

She blinked in confusion. Not there? Then where?

“Sit here,” he said again, tone calm but deliberate.

Her mind flashed back—last time he’d said those exact same three words, she’d refused, and he’d simply taken matters into his own hands.

This time, Nan Xu decided she’d rather do it herself. She stood up, eyed his legs nervously, and took a hesitant step forward, preparing to move.

But before she could, his voice came again. “Not there, either.”

Nan Xu stamped her foot, frustrated. “Then where am I supposed to sit?”

Xie Hejing’s left hand came down lightly on the sofa once more, then turned palm up.

Nan Xu’s heart gave a small jolt. Surely he doesn’t mean… there?

Two seconds later, Xie Hejing raised an eyebrow, utterly unbothered, curling his fingers slightly in a beckoning gesture.

“Sit,” he said softly.

Taw’s Note: Let me make a confession… I thought this novel was just a fluffy, cute romance story—not the kind that crosses the “adult” line. TAT

But since it’s posted on JJWXC, there shouldn’t be any “adult” scenes, right?

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 46

Chapter 46 — If you accept using hand, then…

“Assistant Nan, President Xie isn’t here right now. Could you please give him this document later? I have to rush to a meeting. Thank you.”

Her colleague, Xiao Qi, said as she hurried by.

“Alright,” Nan Xu replied, taking the folder and placing it neatly on the top of the pile.

“Oh, right—Director Qi from the project you were handling came by earlier. You happened to be out. Maybe you should set up a meeting with him to discuss the project details,” Xiao Qi reminded her kindly.

Nan Xu quickly thanked her. “Oh, okay, thank you!”

She pulled up Xie Hejing’s schedule and compared it with her own, trying to find a slot that would work.

Right—she also had to check Director Qi’s availability. The project timeline sheet wasn’t even finished yet. Nan Xu was running off her feet.

On her desk were two stacks of documents and Xie Hejing’s itinerary, all of which needed to be double-checked—she couldn’t afford even the slightest mistake.

After taking so many days off, she’d built up quite a backlog of work.

Since the moment she arrived that morning, she hadn’t lifted her head once, her attention completely absorbed in her tasks.

It wasn’t until several notifications popped up on her phone that her focus was reluctantly pulled away.

Nan Xu picked up her phone and glanced around the empty president’s office. She let out a small sigh of relief. Luckily, Xie Hejing was out for the morning—she could finally relax a little and steal a short break.

She placed her phone beside her computer, pretending to review documents, though her eyes were actually fixed on a video Wen Qi had sent her.

It was the one from the bar—that moment when Xie Hejing kissed her—secretly recorded by Wen Qi, who’d even thoughtfully added background music.

[Xuxu, tell me—did I film it well? With this angle and lighting, you could convince anyone it’s a drama scene.]

Nan Xu opened the video. Xie Hejing’s hand rested on the back of her head as he kissed her, gentle yet deliberate.

After the kiss, she had lowered her head in shy embarrassment, completely unaware of the unrestrained hunger in his eyes, as though he wanted to devour her whole.

Her cheeks instantly grew warm again.

She thanked Wen Qi for the video, and after a long moment of hesitation, decided to save it.

Unable to resist, she watched it once more—but then her gaze was drawn to something else.

The corner of a wallet peeked out of Xie Hejing’s jacket pocket.

It was the one she had given him as a gift.

The button flap was open, and with her sharp eyes, Nan Xu noticed something familiar inside—

A bracelet.

Her bracelet. The one she had accidentally left behind at his place a long time ago.

She’d meant to ask for it back, but with school and work piling up, she’d let it slip her mind.

She never expected he’d still kept it all this time.

Finally, she’d have a reason to ask for it back. Nan Xu smiled—the first genuine smile she’d had all day.

When lunchtime came, Xie Hejing still hadn’t returned to the office. Nan Xu ate with her colleagues in the cafeteria.

Xiao Qi naturally took a seat beside her.

Qi Yule had been Nan Xu’s closest coworker since she joined the company. They were around the same age, with similar backgrounds—both had studied abroad before returning home to work.

As soon as Xiao Qi sat down, she started grumbling about arriving too late for lunch—most of the good dishes were already gone.

Then, glancing at Nan Xu’s tray, she frowned.

“Xiao Nan, is that all you’re eating? Won’t you be starving by the afternoon?”

During work hours, Qi Yule called her “Assistant Nan,” but once office hours ended, she’d switch to “Xiao Nan.” She claimed it was to keep work and personal life separate.

On Nan Xu’s plate sat only a few pieces of chicken, some tofu, and a bit of green vegetables.

Seeing this, Qi Yule couldn’t help but ask with concern.

Nan Xu smiled lightly. “I don’t have much of an appetite today. I probably won’t get hungry later.”

Xiao Qi asked again, “Have you been working too much lately? Maybe it’s because you took that week off.”

“Hey, when you asked for leave, did President Xie give you a hard time?”

“And when you two were on that business trip together—was he difficult to get along with?”

“No, not really. He’s actually pretty easy to get along with.” Nan Xu took a bite of chicken and then asked, “Does he usually get angry at people?”

She didn’t recall seeing that side of him.

No—actually, she had. Xie Hejing’s cold expression could be terrifying, especially when he stared at someone in silence.

“Of course he does. He’s super strict, especially during meetings. Every time I have to attend one with him there, I can’t even breathe properly.”

Thinking of those meetings, Qi Yule shivered a little. Still, for all his high standards, Xie Hejing also paid well.

“But lately, his temper seems to have improved a lot. I’ve seen him smiling at his phone several times.”

Qi Yule tried to recall the moments. “I think it was around the time you were on leave. That scary aura of his had completely faded. He was even smiling a lot—looked so warm and pleasant. Too bad you weren’t around to see it.”

During Nan Xu’s absence, Qi Yule had no one to really talk to. Most of the women in the office were either married or had boyfriends, and whenever they gathered, the topic inevitably turned to family.

Qi Yule never had much to contribute, so she simply kept quiet, staying on the sidelines.

That was why she especially cherished her conversations with Nan Xu—someone she could actually relate to.

“Xiao Nan, there’s a team dinner after work today. Are you going?”

“Team dinner?” Nan Xu looked puzzled. “I didn’t hear about that.”

Qi Yule smacked her forehead. “Ah right! You weren’t at work yesterday when Sister Zhang came by to tell us. She told me to pass the message along, but it’s been so busy this morning that I completely forgot until now.”

“So, are you coming?” Qi Yule asked again, eyes full of anticipation.

The last time they had a team event, Nan Xu had taken leave. This time, Sister Zhang had specifically said she shouldn’t miss it—it’d be good for her to blend in with the team.

Qi Yule, however, dreaded going alone. Without someone to chat with, those events always felt painfully dull. That’s why she really hoped Nan Xu, another young and single colleague, would join her.

After a brief pause, Nan Xu nodded. She didn’t have any plans that evening anyway, and attending a team event didn’t sound too bad.

“I’ll go.”

Qi Yule’s face instantly lit up. “Perfect! Then let’s go together after work!”

“Sure.”

Xie Hejing hadn’t been in the office all day, but he still managed to send timely reminders to Nan Xu—like telling her to eat lunch.

When it was time to leave work, another message came in from him:

[I won’t be home on time tonight. Make something for yourself—no ordering takeout.]

At that moment, Qi Yule had her arm linked through Nan Xu’s, happily discussing whose car they should ride in to the restaurant.

[Company team dinner. I’ll head back after it ends.]

Xie Hejing narrowed his eyes. Ah, right—there was some team event today. He vaguely remembered hearing about it but hadn’t paid much attention. He rarely attended those anyway. If he did, no one else would have any fun.

[Don’t drink. Eat less spicy food. I’ll come pick you up after it’s over.]

Nan Xu pressed her lips together and replied: [I can go back on my own.]

[Back where? My parents’ place?] Xie Hejing shot back immediately.

He could always read her mind. If he didn’t come for her, Nan Xu would definitely head back to the old family house.

He quickly shut down that idea: [I already told them you’re away on a month-long business trip. If you show up now, they might think they’re seeing a ghost.]

[A business trip again?]

Nan Xu stared at his “cover story,” feeling it was a bit too far-fetched.

So she texted: [Won’t they think you’re overworking your employees?]

[They do. I got scolded for it.]

Reading that, Nan Xu couldn’t help imagining his voice carrying a faintly aggrieved tone. The image made her smile.

Qi Yule tugged at her arm. “Xiao Nan, save your texting for later! Sister Zhang’s calling us to get on the bus!”

“Okay.”

Nan Xu sent her last reply to Xie Hejing, tucked her phone into her pocket, and followed along.

There were quite a few people at the team event, but the atmosphere was pleasant. No one was pushing drinks on others—those who wanted to drink did, and those who didn’t were left alone.

Nan Xu only took a glass of orange juice, sipping it slowly as she listened to her female colleagues chat. Most of their conversations revolved around their husbands and children.

She and Qi Yule had been quietly keeping to themselves—until Sister Zhang brought them into the spotlight.

“Xiao Nan, Xiao Qi, you two don’t have any plans for dating yet?”

Both froze for a moment.

But Nan Xu quickly answered, straightforward as always: “I do. I’m seeing someone recently.”

That instantly piqued Sister Zhang’s interest. “Oh? So there’s someone new! Tell me, maybe I can give you some advice.”

Nan Xu smiled slightly. Of course, she couldn’t say it was Xie Hejing, so she said instead, “He’s an old classmate.”

“An old classmate, huh? That’s good—you already know each other, and there’s some emotional foundation there. If things work out, you better invite me to your wedding banquet!” Sister Zhang said cheerfully.

Nan Xu chuckled. “Of course. If it really works out, I’ll definitely invite you, Sister Zhang.”

Sister Zhang laughed heartily. Being the oldest among them—her daughter was already in high school—she naturally treated Nan Xu and Qi Yule like younger sisters, always wanting to ask more about their lives.

“What about you, Xiao Qi? Do you have anyone you’re seeing? If not, I can introduce you to someone. Don’t worry, I’d never set you up just as a favor to someone else.”

Qi Yule, though two years older than Nan Xu, had never dated anyone. She was shy by nature, and at the mention of being set up, she grew flustered. After stammering for a while, she finally managed a small, hesitant, “Okay.”

At work, Qi Yule was always brisk, efficient, and detail-oriented—but right now, she was blushing, which drew teasing laughter from the other women at the table.

Nan Xu chuckled along, listening quietly as their conversation continued. Somehow, the topic gradually drifted into rather adult topics.

Qi Yule’s face turned even redder. She bit her straw, pretending to play on her phone, trying to ignore the conversation.

Nan Xu, however, listened intently. She wasn’t too shy to pay attention; in fact, she felt that maybe she could learn something from their experienced talk.

“I swear, lately things between my husband and me feel just like going to work—no feelings, just business as usual.”

“Hahaha! Don’t tell me you two just get straight to it with no romance at all?” Sister Zhang teased boldly.

The first woman shrugged. “Well, what else are we supposed to do? He walks into the room and just… starts.”

Sister Zhang shot her a look of mock disapproval. “You can’t just let him take charge like that. You should enjoy it too! Tell him to please you for once. Otherwise, of course it’s going to feel like work.”

“Really? Maybe I’ll try that tonight,” the woman said, sounding half-convinced. Then she frowned. “But what if he doesn’t want to?”

Sister Zhang took a sip of wine and said decisively, “Then find someone who does.”

“…”

The two older women went back and forth like that, chatting easily, until Sister Zhang’s eyes landed on Nan Xu, who was still listening attentively.

“What’s the matter, Xiao Nan? Got something you want to ask?” she said with a teasing smile.

Nan Xu didn’t shy away. She thought for a moment before asking, “I just wanted to know—before you got married, how did you know you really had feelings for your husband?”

The table went quiet for a beat.

One of the women, who had married through a blind date, looked thoughtful. She’d never really considered the question before. Back then, she’d just thought it was time—his background was good, their families matched—so they got married.

Sister Zhang, on the other hand, spoke with the confidence of experience. She’d been married three times—and each time, she was the one who initiated the divorce. Whenever the love was gone, just sharing the same space made her uncomfortable.

“It’s simple,” she said. “Spend time together. Talk about life, ideals, the future. But don’t just stop at that. Emotional connection is good, but it’s not everything.”

“Find a chance to hold hands, to kiss—and maybe go a bit further. In those moments, pay attention to what you really feel. If you feel resistance, that’s your answer. But if there’s joy, excitement—then chances are, you do like him.”

Nan Xu lowered her eyes. They’d done most of that already… except for the more intimate part.

She paused.

Was what she and Xie Hejing had now still not enough?

Later that night, Xie Hejing’s car was parked on a side street. After saying goodbye to her coworkers, Nan Xu slipped through a narrow alley and climbed into his car.

The moment she sat down, she spoke directly:

“Brother, I think our… level of contact still isn’t enough.”

For a second, Xie Hejing froze, caught completely off guard.

She always had a way of saying things that left him momentarily speechless.

But, in truth, what she said was exactly what he’d been thinking.

He had been wondering how to bring it up himself—how to do it without scaring her off. He hadn’t expected her to say it first.

“And what kind of contact are you thinking of?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

Saying is one thing, but doing is another. Don’t look at how Nan Xu seems bold now; if Xie Hejing really starts to make a move, Nan Xu will probably be scared witless.

He could only guide her slowly.

Nan Xu was still thinking, “Let me think…”

She regretted not asking Sister Zhang for more details earlier.

Seeing this, Xie Hejing reminded her in a drawn-out tone, “I told you at the resort last time, you could try using a hand. Nan Xu, we can take it slow. If you accept using a hand, we can try other places next time.”

Nan Xu finally remembered this and said, “Using a hand? I’ll look up what to do later.”

She wasn’t clear on the specific process, only vaguely recalling Sister Zhang briefly mentioning it earlier.

Hearing this, Xie Hejing found it strange—how could Nan Xu accept using a hand so easily?

Sure enough, a few seconds later, he heard her say, “Brother, I have nail extensions; will it hurt you, will it affect anything? Should I go get them removed?”

She looked at her nails with a hint of regret, she really liked this color.

Xie Hejing’s expression suddenly darkened. So Nan Xu thought it meant using her hand.

No wonder she agreed so quickly. Xie Hejing said through gritted teeth, “Not your hand, mine.”

Nan Xu’s expression froze. Her gaze fell on the hand Xie Hejing was holding the steering wheel with.

The knuckles were distinct, veins stood out and then flattened with the movement, and the fingers were long and agile, concealing an undeniable strength.

“Yours?” Nan Xu swallowed.

Xie Hejing slightly curled the corner of his lips, “Of course. After all, it’s about seeing if you have desire for me. Naturally, I’ll be the one to ‘serve’ you.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 45

Chapter 45 — Good baby, good girl, open your mouth, okay? Hmm?

“Nope, not showing you,” Xie Hejing teased, raising an eyebrow.

Nan Xu’s cheeks flushed a soft, tipsy pink. Her eyelids drooped, then struggled back up again.

“Why not?” she mumbled softly, blinking, a confused look in her eyes.

If she saw it now, she’d surely get startled—and he’d have to catch her again.

“Enough with the whys,” he said, glancing at the table. Her honey water had been sipped twice already. “‘Drunkard,’ drink your water.”

He leaned over, picked up the cup—still warm—and brought it to her lips.

Nan Xu tilted her head away. “You still call me ‘drunkard,’ I’m not drinking.”

She scrunched her nose. “I’m not even that drunk.”

Xie Hejing’s lips curved slightly. After drinking, she was livelier—playful, cute, and charming all at once.

“Alright,” he said. “Then what do you want me to call you?”

Nan Xu lowered her eyes, thinking for a moment. “Call me… I don’t know.”

“You’re so drunk you forgot your own name?” Xie Hejing teased, smiling.

“I’m Nan Xu, Brother. I’m not drunk,” she emphasized again, though her words were still slurred.

Her little act made him chuckle. He couldn’t resist pinching her cheeks. “Fine, not drunk then. Let’s get to the main business.”

“What main business?”

Nan Xu frowned. Dizziness washed over her, and lifting her head felt exhausting. Her body went limp, and she collapsed onto Xie Hejing.

“You promised me at the bar, you’d let me kiss you when we got home,” he reminded her.

“The bar…” Nan Xu thought for a moment, but instead of recalling that promise, she pictured Wei Qingxuan peeling grapes for Wen Qi. Slowly, a smile crept onto her face. “I remember now… Brother, I want grapes too.”

Xie Hejing: “….”

Well… that wasn’t what he’d been thinking about. But he didn’t mind. The night was long, and Nan Xu was in his arms—he could kiss her whenever he wanted.

He straightened up, then leaned forward to grab his phone.

The sudden movement startled Nan Xu; she thought she might fall and instinctively wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.

Noticing her grip, Xie Hejing’s gaze flickered, and he slowed down, carefully holding the motion for ten seconds while she clung to him.

When they finally settled back onto the sofa, Nan Xu released her hands.

Xie Hejing felt a brief pang of disappointment.

The next second, he grabbed her hands and placed them around his waist. “Hold me.”

Nan Xu protested: “It’s hot.”

Xie Hejing’s body was hot, and the tighter Nan Xu held him, the hotter it became.

She tried to pull her hands away, but he pressed them back. “Hot or not, you’re holding me.”

You’ll still be hugging me when we sleep later.

He left the second part unsaid, coaxing her instead: “Be good, hug me. I’ll buy you food—anything you want.”

Nan Xu’s eyes lit up. “How about barbecue?”

“No,” Xie Hejing refused firmly.

Her stomach was sensitive—eating that kind of food could make her vomit or give her diarrhea.

Being denied, Nan Xu sniffled. “Then what about crayfish? I want something spicy, really spicy.”

“No,” he refused again.

Nan Xu’s face fell. “Then I won’t hug you! I’m going back! I don’t want to stay here!”

She started fussing, trying to leave.

Xie Hejing’s expression darkened, and he grit his teeth. “Fine. I’ll order it, but don’t eat too much.”

“Okay.”

After placing the order, he saw the delivery would take over an hour. During the wait, Nan Xu fell asleep on him. He dared not move—any slight motion and her arms around him would loosen.

But Xie Hejing had never felt time pass so quickly. It seemed like she had just fallen asleep when the doorbell rang.

He carefully lifted her onto the sofa and draped a nearby jacket over her. Then he spread all the food she had wanted on the table.

“Nan Xu, time to eat.”

She mumbled indistinctly, turned over, and didn’t move.

Seeing her sleep so soundly, he pinched her nose. “Nan Xu, if you don’t wake up, the food will get cold.”

Her nose blocked, struggling to breathe, Nan Xu finally opened her eyes. “Brother, I’m so sleepy.”

Xie Hejing chuckled but still said, “Eat first, then sleep.”

Nan Xu, easygoing even under the lingering effects of alcohol, didn’t protest. She obediently sat at the table and ate slowly.

Xie Hejing sat beside her, peeling grapes.

Knowing she wouldn’t eat much, he had ordered small portions so she wouldn’t feel burdened.

Halfway through, she smiled at him. “Brother, this place is really nice. I’ll come here often.”

Hearing this, Xie Hejing paused. Apparently, she hadn’t absorbed what he said in the car.

“It’s not just my home—it’s ours. You’ll be staying here for the whole month.”

“Staying here?” Nan Xu blinked, trying to shake off the alcohol haze in her brain.

“Yes,” he nodded, not giving her time to think. “Hurry and eat—afterwards, you still need to brush your teeth and sleep.”

Nan Xu turned her head but ate much more slowly.

She picked up a crayfish and just as it touched her tongue, a wave of intense heat surged up. Tears sprang into her beautiful eyes from the spiciness.

Xie Hejing immediately handed her the water he had prepared. He had anticipated this reaction, but Nan Xu, never having tried it before, had insisted.

Sure enough, the spice was too much—she stopped eating, wiped her mouth, and let out a big yawn.

Xie Hejing handed her the grapes. “Eat these, then sleep after.”

Nan Xu picked them up, popping one into her mouth after another.

Xie Hejing watched her slowly, his gaze drifting to her lips. Once a rosy pink, they were now slightly reddened and swollen from the spice, glistening with grape juice—temptingly soft and luscious.

His Adam’s apple moved unconsciously. “After peeling all these for you, you’re not going to feed me one?”

Hearing that, Nan Xu paused, holding a grape to Xie Hejing’s lips. “Here, you eat it.”

He shook his head. “You eat first.”

Nan Xu frowned, puzzled by his intentions, but too lazy to question further. She withdrew her hand and continued eating. The sweet juice made her squint in contentment.

Before she could savor it fully, Xie Hejing suddenly leaned in. One hand cradled the back of her head, the other trapped her hand.

He kissed her lips—gentle, yet firm.

“Mmm… mm…”

Nan Xu let out two soft whimpers. His tongue nudged between her teeth, nibbled, and brushed against the grape in her mouth, gently pressing it.

The soft fruit began to deform under the pressure, its sweet juice spilling from the corners of her mouth, stirred by Xie Hejing’s movements.

Then he paused, swallowing the fruit, and kissed the corner of her lips. He picked the largest grape and held it to her lips.

Nan Xu, still catching her breath, refused to open her mouth.

“Good girl, open up,” he coaxed.

She shook her head stubbornly.

Xie Hejing didn’t rush. He brushed her lips gently, kissed her forehead, then her eyes, nose tip, and finally a soft touch on her lips.

“Good baby, good girl, open your mouth, okay? Hmm?”

Her gaze blurred; she tried to stay alert, but her awareness quickly drifted.

After a long moment, she gathered just enough clarity to part her lips. “Be gentle.”

Xie Hejing’s kisses were usually intense, as if he wanted to steal every breath from her, making her melt into his arms. He would hold her tightly, unwilling to ever let go.

A sly smile curved his lips, a dark glint in his eyes. “Where should I be gentle?”

Nan Xu frowned, confused. She raised her hand, pressing it gently to his lips. “Here… be gentle here.”

He bent closer, meeting her gaze. Even knowing she was drunk and not fully aware, he reminded her, “Sweetheart, this is your only chance to say ‘be gentle.’ Next time you say it, I won’t listen,”—he paused a beat—“and I won’t stop.”

Nan Xu’s eyelids were heavy with intoxication; she struggled to discern his words. She didn’t even realize what he meant—only catching the last line.

Won’t stop?!

She looked up at him, slightly dazed. “Stop… why stop?”

Xie Hejing’s breath deepened. He truly loved this drunken, vulnerable version of Nan Xu.

He nodded, praising her. “Yes, exactly. Why would we stop? We won’t stop.”

Nan Xu’s only chance to make Xie Hejing be gentle had already slipped away.

He kissed lightly—lighter than he ever had before—afraid that if he kissed too hard, she might have a chance to scold him, call him out, and then demand a gentler kiss next time.

Although, of course, he wouldn’t actually listen.

The grape juice smeared at the corner of Nan Xu’s lips was repeatedly swept away by Xie Hejing, and together they went through an entire plate of grapes.

Nan Xu stared at the empty plate for a long moment before finally realizing what happened. She pouted, complaining, “Why did you eat them all? I only had a few!”

Xie Hejing, in a good mood, asked, “Then, more tomorrow?”

Nan Xu refused, puffing out her cheeks and saying nothing.

He continued, “How about something else to eat?”

She didn’t respond. “I’m sleepy,” she murmured.

Xie Hejing had prepared so much for her—clothes, shoes, food, daily necessities… even skincare products, all researched and bought for her.

But Nan Xu, too drunk to care, resisted taking a shower and going to bed. He tried to help, but she wildly refused, fighting off the effects of the alcohol.

Finally, he had to stand by the bathroom door, talking to her to make sure she was still conscious. He even worried she might lose her balance and fall while trying to sleep in the bathroom—if he saw anything, she’d definitely cry. And this was the kind of crying he couldn’t soothe.

Luckily, Nan Xu came out safely, dressed in her pajamas. Xie Hejing finally exhaled in relief.

“Where do I sleep?” she asked, too drowsy to care about words, only thinking about sleep.

He smiled. “Here for now. The master bedroom is still being set up, so it’s not ready.”

Nan Xu nodded without thinking further.

Xie Hejing’s smile deepened. The first thing he did after renting the apartment was to set up the master bedroom according to Nan Xu’s preferences. It was fully ready—there was no issue of his room being done while the master bedroom wasn’t.

If she were fully awake, Nan Xu might have wanted to explore the master bedroom first, but in her sleep-deprived, intoxicated state, she simply collapsed on the bed. Soon, the steady sound of her breathing confirmed she was asleep.

Xie Hejing tidied up the clothes Nan Xu had changed out of, then went to the living room to put away the delivery food, finishing with a quick shower.

He quietly climbed into bed. Nan Xu was still asleep. He didn’t hold her immediately, but placed her hand on his waist, knowing she liked to hug something while sleeping.

To prevent her from rolling over in the night and letting go, he propped a pillow against her lower back.

The next morning, Nan Xu woke to a strange blanket, an unfamiliar room, and the familiar sight of Xie Hejing.

When she moved, she realized her hand was still hugging his waist—maybe even a little tightly—and her heart jumped to her throat in an instant.

How did she end up sleeping on Xie Hejing’s bed, hugging him?!

She peeked up quietly—he was still asleep. Her heartbeat slowed slightly.

Trying to calm herself, she bit her lip and attempted to quietly withdraw her hand, planning to get out of bed as soon as possible.

But just as she pulled halfway back, Xie Hejing’s hand closed over hers. His voice, lazy and just-awake, rumbled softly:

“Not going to admit it?”

Nan Xu’s head felt like it was exploding. Her hands trembled, her voice stammered: “I… I… don’t… admit… what?”

Xie Hejing smiled faintly, one hand propping up his head, the other lightly patting hers that was still on his waist. “What do you think?”

“I… I hugged you all night,” she stammered.

“And…” he prompted, letting her hang in suspense.

“And…?” Nan Xu swallowed hard, quickly asking. She couldn’t possibly have done something to him while drunk, could she?

Xie Hejing didn’t answer directly, just said, “How could I say? You think about it yourself.”

He wanted to see how much she remembered from last night.

“I… I think… let me think…” Nan Xu lowered her gaze, not daring to look around, carefully recalling the previous night: drinking, riding in the car, eating, and…

Her eyes widened in realization as she looked at Xie Hejing.

He tightened his hand slightly, squinting as if to see through her thoughts.

Nan Xu’s teeth chattered.

And “be gentle,” followed by a shower…

But she didn’t feel anything strange on herself. Had she done something to Xie Hejing last night? Otherwise, why did she remember “be gentle”? What exactly was supposed to be gentle?

Her head felt like it might explode.

Seeing her flustered, Xie Hejing became serious. He cleared his throat: “Alright, nothing happened. You don’t have to take responsibility.”

Nan Xu, still lost in thoughts of what she might have done, suddenly heard this. She bit her lip and asked uncertainly, “Really… I don’t need to take responsibility?”

Her words carried a tiny hint of hope, as if one “yes” from him would let her quickly change and leave.

Xie Hejing’s brows furrowed: “You really want to not take responsibility?”

“No, no!” Nan Xu hurriedly denied, carefully seeking reassurance. “Then… can you at least tell me what I did to you?”

“‘Be gentle,’ changing clothes… I don’t remember much from last night. You tell me first, then I can take responsibility.”

Since she only recalled these things, Xie Hejing’s aggressive aura dissipated quite a bit, and a hint of mischief flashed in his eyes.

“Nothing really… very simple…”

Nothing? That’s good. Nan Xu exhaled deeply.

Xie Hejing curled his lips into a grin. “You hugged me, kissed me, climbed onto my bed late at night, tried to… but I didn’t agree. So you had to hug me to sleep.”

The words “didn’t agree” were spoken rigidly, yet Nan Xu hadn’t reacted. He added, “And… you hugged me all night.”

He spoke in one breath. Nan Xu was still lost in relief at “nothing happened,” until she carefully recalled the last part.

Her eyes went wide. “What… I tried to…?”

Her shock made Xie Hejing frown. “Why so surprised? You didn’t succeed. Until you’re sure about your feelings for me, I won’t let you have me so easily.”

Nan Xu: “…”

She opened her mouth, hesitating, then asked, “Why didn’t you knock me out and make me sleep outside?”

He was indifferent. “Couldn’t do it. And besides, Nan Xu, don’t focus on my actions—I’m the one being hugged here.”

“Just hugging… shouldn’t be a big deal, right?” she murmured. After all, she had kissed him—hugging seemed reasonable.

Unexpectedly, Xie Hejing didn’t argue. He even seemed pleased. “Yes, hugging isn’t a big deal. So, let’s continue tonight.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 44

Chapter 44 — I can’t help but do it with you

A bar in Zhi’an—five people sat together in one of the booths.

They were all in pairs, leaving only one person in the middle, feeling like a bright, flashing lightbulb. His eyes full of resentment, he shot a glare at the couple on his left, and didn’t spare the pair on his right either.

“You guys, seriously…”

He clenched his jaw for a long moment before finally spitting out, “You’re unbelievable.”

“When I invited you, none of you could make it. But now that you’re here—every single one of you shows up with your partner.”

He pointed at them dramatically. “You’re just bullying me for being single, huh?”

Watching Xiang Weishi’s sulking face, Wen Qi laughed so hard she nearly doubled over. Turning to Nan Xu, she said between bursts of laughter, “See, I told you, didn’t I? Hahaha!”

Nan Xu’s eyes curved with her smile, warmth flooding her chest. For a moment, it felt like she was back in their school days—Wen Qi teasing Xiang Weishi, while she and Xie Hejing just watched and laughed from the sidelines.

Xiang Weishi took a deep swig of his drink. “Unbelievable. I came here for a drink, not to watch a live romance show.”

At that, Wen Qi laughed even harder. She turned around, meaning to say something to Wei Qingxuan, but suddenly stumbled a little.

Wei Qingxuan, who had been watching her the whole time, reacted instantly—his hand slipped around her waist to steady her.

“Careful,” he murmured.

Wen Qi just grinned, unbothered, and planted a quick kiss on his cheek before tilting her chin at Xiang Weishi. “A romance show? Please. We’re way sweeter than that.”

Xiang Weishi: “…”

Wei Qingxuan’s eyes were full of affection. He peeled a grape and offered it to Wen Qi, but she wrinkled her nose and turned away—she’d never liked fruit.

Still smiling, Wei Qingxuan brushed a loose strand of hair from her face, his tone gentle as he coaxed, “Be good. Eat a little fruit. I’ll take you to buy a plushie later.”

Xiang Weishi: “…”

If someone could just tell him where to buy a bomb, he’d happily blow this couple up.

Meanwhile, Nan Xu found herself watching Wei Qingxuan more closely. His voice was calm and clear, carrying an easy gentleness that made people feel at ease.

Back in their high school days at Zhi’an No.3, she’d interacted with him a few times—back then, he’d been distant and aloof, hard to approach. She never expected him to change this much.

Sensing her gaze, Wei Qingxuan turned and met her eyes; they exchanged a polite greeting.

Beside her, Xie Hejing’s gaze immediately darkened. The moment he saw Nan Xu smile at Wei Qingxuan—even if it was just out of courtesy—something sharp and possessive flared in his chest.

He slid an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close, making her look at him instead.

Nan Xu blinked, surprised. She hadn’t expected him to get jealous over this, and asked in confusion, “What’s wrong?”

Xie Hejing pointed at his face.

Thinking something was stuck there, Nan Xu leaned in and looked carefully, her brow furrowed. “What’s on your face?”

Xie Hejing: “…”

He sighed, realizing she’d never figure it out unless he said it outright.

“Missing a kiss.”

Only then did Nan Xu finally realize—Xie Hejing’s expression just now wasn’t “there’s something on my face,” but rather “come kiss me.”

She bit her lip and whispered, “There are a lot of people here. Let’s wait until we’re home.”

Xie Hejing lowered his gaze. If she wouldn’t kiss him, then he’d just do it himself.

He reached out, tilted her chin up, and pressed a kiss to her lips. Thinking of how she’d smiled at someone else earlier, he gave her lip a small, punishing bite.

If it weren’t for the fact that Nan Xu embarrassed easily, he probably would’ve kissed her much deeper.

When he finally let her go, her cheeks were flushed and her eyes glistened faintly.

At that moment, Xie Hejing suddenly regretted coming out at all—they should’ve just stayed home together.

It was her first time being kissed in front of so many people. Nan Xu’s body felt hot all over, and the blush crept all the way to the tips of her ears.

She gave his chest a light smack—not hard, but enough to make his heart tremble. With a teasing smile tugging at his lips, he looked at her.

“What are you doing? I told you, wait until we’re home,” she said, frowning slightly.

Xie Hejing arched a brow. “So if we go home, I get to kiss you?”

“No—no more kissing,” Nan Xu muttered, turning her face away.

“Then I’ll just kiss you here,” he said.

Seeing him lean in again, Nan Xu quickly blurted out, “Fine—I’ll let you, I’ll let you!”

Joy flared across Xie Hejing’s face like a spark catching flame. His smile reached his eyes as he took her hand and turned to Xiang Weishi.

“See? No reality show could ever be sweeter than us.”

Xiang Weishi’s expression twisted like all his features were trying to flee his face.

How could he have forgotten about this pair? This walking explosion of sweetness.

He might as well have refused to drink with them tonight—at least then he could’ve stayed a peaceful, solitary man.

Why had he ever been stupid enough to post that moment to his Moments?

Then, as a thought struck him, he asked the question that had been bugging him most: “You two never said—when did you start dating?”

He’d been so busy lately that he hadn’t had time to ask about Nan Xu and Xie Hejing’s relationship.

Who would’ve thought that these two quiet people—by the next time he saw them, they’d already be together?

Nan Xu froze, unsure how to respond.

Xie Hejing, however, smiled easily. “You’ll find out in a month.”

Xiang Weishi frowned, about to ask why he had to wait a whole month.

But Wen Qi smoothly changed the subject. “Xiang Weishi, if you’re that curious, I can tell you how long I’ve been with Wei Qingxuan.”

Xiang Weishi: “…”

“I don’t want to know.”

He glared at all four of them in turn. To hell with it—may you all explode together.

Looking at his indignant expression, Nan Xu suddenly remembered the time he found out she was living at Xie Hejing’s place.

That was two weeks before the college entrance exams. Her guitar had broken, and she needed to go to the music shop to find Cheng Jia.

But Cheng Jia’s schedule was always packed—either performing or teaching—so the two could only arrange to meet on one of the rare, relaxed weekends.

Nan Xu had told Zhang Huiwan and Xie Hejing in advance that she’d be going out over the weekend. When the time came, she slung her guitar over her shoulder, said goodbye to them both, and headed out.

Coincidentally, that same weekend, Xiang Weishi had been insisting on going to Xie Hejing’s place to play video games.

He’d realized that for almost a whole year, every single time he brought it up, Xie Hejing always turned him down flat.

So today—no matter what—he was going!

And sure enough, when he mentioned it again, Xie Hejing rejected him once more.

Xiang Weishi immediately lost it. For half an hour straight, he kept nagging in Xie Hejing’s ear—asking if there was something fishy going on, if their brotherhood still meant anything, and whether playing a simple game together was suddenly forbidden.

After half an hour of relentless pestering, Xie Hejing was finally driven to his limit. Thinking Nan Xu wouldn’t be back anytime soon, he reluctantly agreed.

What he didn’t expect was that, on her way to the music shop, Nan Xu got a message from Cheng Jia saying something urgent had come up, so her guitar repair had to be postponed.

So Nan Xu turned back halfway.

She’d stayed up late studying the night before and was feeling drained, so she didn’t bother going anywhere else.

When she got home, neither Xie Hejing nor Zhang Huiwan were there. She cooked herself a simple bowl of noodles—it didn’t taste great, but she still finished it bit by bit.

After sitting downstairs for a while, drowsiness crept up on her, and she went upstairs to rest.

By the time Xie Hejing and Xiang Weishi arrived, Nan Xu was already asleep in her room.

When she groggily woke, she heard the sound of a video game coming from downstairs.

Guessing that Xie Hejing must have come home, she suddenly remembered noticing earlier that the kitchen faucet was leaking.

Without thinking much of it, she pushed open her door and stepped into the hallway. From there, she saw Xie Hejing sitting alone in the living room, staring intently at the game screen.

Raising her voice, she called out, “Brother, the kitchen faucet—”

Right at that moment, Xiang Weishi came out of the kitchen, happily holding a big slice of watermelon.

“Xie Hejing, this watermelon—” he began, but as soon as he heard a girl’s voice from upstairs, he froze and looked up.

Nan Xu, hearing a man’s voice from the kitchen, turned her head—and the two locked eyes.

“Ah!!!” Nan Xu’s heart nearly stopped on the spot.

“Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap—” Xiang Weishi stammered, repeating the same phrase over and over, louder each time.

The watermelon slipped from his hands and hit the floor with a splat, but he didn’t even notice. He just kept mumbling, “Holy crap, holy crap… Am I hallucinating?”

Both of them stood there frozen until Xie Hejing was the first to react.

He didn’t say a word, just glanced at Nan Xu.

She was wearing a nightdress. The summer heat in Zhi’an was sweltering, and since Nan Xu couldn’t stand the warmth, she always changed into a light dress to sleep. It wasn’t exactly modest.

Nan Xu, however, didn’t notice anything unusual. Her mind was entirely on one thing—why on earth was Xiang Weishi in their house?

Xie Hejing, on the other hand, immediately dropped his controller and dashed over to Xiang Weishi, covering his eyes in one swift move.

Feeling Xie Hejing’s hand over his face, Xiang Weishi said, “Wait—you see it too, right? Am I hallucinating, or am I dreaming?”

Xie Hejing had no intention of replying to Xiang Weishi. Instead, he simply looked up and motioned for Nan Xu to go back to her room.

Catching his meaning, Nan Xu, though a little worried about how Xiang Weishi might react, trusted that nothing would go wrong with Xie Hejing there.

She gave a quick nod and bolted upstairs without looking back.

Meanwhile, Xiang Weishi was still muttering to himself, half in shock. “Am I dreaming? I must be dreaming. No, no—maybe I’m hallucinating…”

Clearly, the scene he’d just witnessed had been too much for him to process.

He had just seen Nan Xu, Nan Xu, standing on the second floor of Xie Hejing’s house—in a nightdress.

How was that even possible? These two barely exchanged ten sentences at school!

The world had officially gone insane.

“Xie Hejing, why are you covering my eyes?” Xiang Weishi’s voice rose in panic. “Didn’t you see who was upstairs just now?”

He tried prying Xie Hejing’s hand away, but since Nan Xu hadn’t yet reached her room, Xie Hejing held firm, even against Xiang Weishi’s full strength.

About ten seconds later, once they heard the soft click of Nan Xu’s door closing, Xie Hejing finally released him.

Light returned to Xiang Weishi’s world. He spun around immediately. “Why the hell did you cover my eyes? Don’t think I didn’t see her—that was Nan Xu!”

Xie Hejing stayed silent.

But he didn’t deny it either.

Xiang Weishi’s hand trembled as he pointed at him. “You—you two…” He gestured toward the second floor. “You’re living together?!”

Xie Hejing’s gaze remained calm as he corrected him. “She’s staying here temporarily. She’s just boarding at my place.”

Xiang Weishi’s eyes widened even more. “Boarding at your place? That means—she’s been living here for a year?!”

Xie Hejing gave a faint “mm” in response.

At that, Xiang Weishi felt like his entire worldview was collapsing. No wonder he’s changed so much this past year!

Home every day on time, hardly playing games, not going to bars anymore—he’d practically turned into every parent’s dream child.

Within an hour, Wen Qi had heard the news too. She went absolutely wild, spamming Nan Xu with messages faster than Nan Xu could even reply.

Downstairs, Xiang Weishi was interrogating Xie Hejing.

Upstairs, Wen Qi was interrogating Nan Xu.

By the end of that day, the two of them were forced to confess everything that had happened over the past year.

. . . . .

Later that night…

“Xie Hejing, Wei Qingxuan, why aren’t you two drinking?” Xiang Weishi asked, slurring a little as he raised his glass.

Seeing that neither of them moved, he turned to Nan Xu and Wen Qi instead. “Forget them, they’re no fun. Come on, let’s drink!”

Wen Qi complained that the small glasses were too boring and swapped hers out for a big tumbler, filling it to the brim before downing it in one gulp.

Nan Xu didn’t usually drink much, but maybe she got caught up in their energy—or maybe the chaos of the day had loosened her up—because she too drank half a glass in one go.

Xie Hejing and Wei Qingxuan exchanged a look across the table. Sitting on opposite sides, they both sighed helplessly and shook their heads.

In this house, it seemed, there was no way both of them could drink. Someone had to stay sober.

After another hour, the two of them finally forced an end to the drinking session. If they hadn’t stopped, there was no way all three of them would have made it out of the bar without being carried.

Xie Hejing called a car for Xiang Weishi and led Nan Xu over to the car.

Nan Xu, slightly tipsy, was unusually obedient. She didn’t speak much on her own and preferred to stay quietly by his side. Every now and then, some amusing thought would cross her mind, and a faint smile would appear on her face.

At this moment, whatever Xie Hejing asked her to do, she did willingly.

He pushed her into the back seat and reminded her, “If you feel sick, just throw up in the car. Don’t hold it in.”

Nan Xu shook her head. “I can’t throw up in the car. That’s not hygienic.”

The “drunkard” even cared about hygiene. Sitting in the driver’s seat, Xie Hejing smiled. “Then where do you want to throw up?”

“I don’t want to throw up yet,” she grinned. “My tolerance has improved.”

Xie Hejing: “….”

The car didn’t head toward the resort, but instead drove toward a neighborhood Nan Xu had never been to before.

She clutched the door, peering out the window. “Where are we going?”

Hearing her question, Xie Hejing raised an eyebrow. Good—she wasn’t completely drunk.

“Home.”

“This isn’t the way to home,” Nan Xu said, struggling to keep her eyes open and figure out where they were.

“To our home,” Xie Hejing added after a brief pause, “temporarily.”

Ever since Nan Xu agreed to try being with him for a month, Xie Hejing had wasted no time renting this apartment and getting everything ready inside.

As they walked upstairs, they happened to meet the elderly man from across the hall coming down. Seeing Xie Hejing helping Nan Xu, he kindly asked, “Is your wife drunk?”

At the word “wife,” Xie Hejing’s lips curved into a small smile. “Yes, she’s happy today and had a little too much to drink.”

“Oh, you’ll need to take good care of her, or she’ll wake up with a headache tomorrow morning.”

Xie Hejing nodded. “Thank you, sir.”

He opened the door and helped her onto the sofa, then turned to close it. But when he looked back, Nan Xu was no longer on the sofa.

His brow furrowed, and he hurried to search, circling the apartment—still no sign of her.

His heart thumped in panic, until he turned and saw the guest room door ajar. Inside, Nan Xu had made herself comfortable, standing at the bedside, staring at a painting.

It was the one she had painted during her business trip.

“That’s mine! Hehe,” she said cheerfully.

Xie Hejing exhaled in relief, walked over, and took her hand. Pretending to scold her, he said, “If you don’t behave and wander around, I’ll leave you here all alone.”

Hearing this, Nan Xu looked up slowly, a small smile curling at the corners of her mouth. “You wouldn’t… You’ve never abandoned me.”

Her voice was a little slurred, but Xie Hejing could still make out what she was saying.

He was genuinely worried that if he looked away for even a second, she might wander off. Simply looking around was fine, but if she touched some electrical appliance… the danger level would spike immediately.

So he put on a serious expression, a little stern: “Maybe this time it will happen.”

Nan Xu pouted. “You can’t say that. When you were drunk before, I never left you.”

Her eyes were misted over, slightly unfocused, her voice soft and a little aggrieved.

Xie Hejing couldn’t stay stern any longer. He rubbed the top of her head. “Alright, I won’t leave you,” he said, then smiled. “Have you ever seen me drunk before?”

He squinted slightly, his breath deepening.

Nan Xu really thought about it for a moment, shaking her head. “No… What are you like when you’re drunk?” she asked.

“I… can’t help but want to make…”

Love with you.

Seeing her glistening, wet-eyed look, Xie Hejing didn’t finish the sentence. He wanted to, but when sober, he could restrain himself. Drunk… that was another matter entirely.

Nan Xu’s foggy brain didn’t catch on. “What do you want to do with me? Why won’t you say it?”

Xie Hejing placed a cup of honey water in front of her. “Drink this.”

Warmth radiated from his palm. Nan Xu took the cup and sipped lightly.

“Why won’t you answer me? Do you not want to talk to me anymore?”

Only then did Xie Hejing notice that when Nan Xu was drunk, she spoke less to others—but more to him. That realization lifted his mood immensely.

But he didn’t show it. Instead, he said, “Too lazy to talk to a ‘drunkard.’”

He grabbed a pair of pink slippers from the door, kneeled on one knee, lifted her foot, and began removing her shoes and socks.

Nan Xu frowned slightly, looking a little wilted. “Do you hate me now?”

Xie Hejing ignored her nonsense and went on to the other foot.

Receiving no reply, Nan Xu pressed her lips together and said softly, “Then I hate you too.”

Xie Hejing’s nerves jolted—he absolutely couldn’t hear that. He quickly finished with her shoes and made her sit on his lap. “You can’t hate me.”

She looked up. “Why not?”

Xie Hejing’s lips curved gently. “Because you have to like me.”

With that thought in mind, he coaxed softly, “Nan Xu, say it after me… say you like me.”

Feeling dizzy, she turned her head away. “You won’t answer my question, so I hate you.”

Xie Hejing’s hand tightened. This girl had a good memory even when drunk.

Clearly, if he didn’t answer her question, there’d be no moving on to anything else.

He sighed helplessly. “There’s so much I want to do with you, but I’m afraid I might hurt you if I do it while drunk.”

Nan Xu blinked slowly, unsure whether she had even understood.

Assuming she was just sleepy, Xie Hejing let her lean against him and gently pressed on her temples, letting her rest in his embrace.

The gentle, clean fragrance of Nan Xu’s hair drifted to his nose, even with a slight hint of wine, it wasn’t unpleasant. The longer the hug lasted, the more obvious the warmth in his arms became.

Like a slow, flowing current, that warmth spread through Xie Hejing’s heart, bringing him a sense of fulfillment he had never felt before.

The person in his arms stirred. Nan Xu lifted her head, only to realize that from this angle, all she could see was Xie Hejing’s jaw.

She cupped his head with her hands, gently tilting it downward, then lifted her slightly drunken eyes to meet his.

“Bro… no, Xie… Xie Hejing, I actually… kind of want to see… what you’re like when you’re drunk.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 43

Chapter 43 — money, a nice figure, and last longer.

By the time Nan Xu and Qi Zhiyu woke up the next day, it was already noon.

Both of them moved lazily about the room. The TV was playing a variety show—one of them sat before the mirror putting on makeup, while the other lounged by the window with a cup of tea in hand.

“Xuxu, how about we go fruit-picking later?” Qi Zhiyu suggested, holding up the guide on her phone.

“Sure,” Nan Xu replied, taking a light sip of tea.

From where she sat, she could see the lush green mountains outside. When the sunlight spilled over the trees, it was like each leaf had been brushed with gold.

Pulling her gaze back, she could see the resort villas scattered across the hillside—ancient in style yet elegant, and when the evening lights turned on, the place looked like a painting of countless homes glowing in harmony.

When walking through the covered corridors, the breeze would set the small copper bells tinkling, their clear chimes echoing softly through the walkway.

Qi Zhiyu came over to stand beside Nan Xu, taking in the view as well. The scenery reflected in her eyes, but after a moment, she sighed. “It’s a pity we have to go back to work tomorrow. Otherwise, I’d love to stay here for a few more days.”

“Tomorrow?” Nan Xu looked up in surprise.

Hadn’t Qi Zhiyu said she took seven days off? That should mean there was still one day left.

Qi Zhiyu nodded miserably. “The client I was supposed to meet the day after tomorrow suddenly needs to fly abroad, so tomorrow’s the only time she’s available. Since I’ve been handling the project from the start, my boss is calling me back early.”

Tomorrow…

Nan Xu’s expression grew a little distant.

“Sorry, Xuxu,” Qi Zhiyu said, wrapping her arms around her and rubbing her head affectionately. “We were supposed to have fun till the very last day.”

“It’s fine. Work comes first,” Nan Xu said with a smile. “We’ll have time to go out again.”

She truly didn’t mind—but a thought crept into her head. Once Qi Zhiyu returned to work, Xie Hejing would probably ask her to come home.

That meant their one-month agreement was about to begin.

To be honest, Nan Xu was nervous. She had no idea what Xie Hejing had planned—he’d only said vaguely that they’d “try a few things.”

But what things? She couldn’t even imagine. Her thoughts began to drift.

“Xuxu, let’s go eat,” Qi Zhiyu said, picking up her bag.

“Oh, okay.” Nan Xu downed the last sip of her tea, deciding not to think too much about it. She might as well enjoy the last day of the holiday.

In the afternoon, during a break from fruit-picking, Nan Xu texted Xie Hejing again to ask where he was. The reply was almost identical to before—he was still at the company.

Nan Xu didn’t press him further. After they finished picking fruit, she spent the rest of the afternoon watching idol dramas with Qi Zhiyu.

When the male and female leads on the screen finally got together, Qi Zhiyu squealed in excitement and threw her arms around Nan Xu.

“Xuxu! I’ve been following this show for so long—they finally got together!”

Nan Xu didn’t usually watch dramas and couldn’t really relate to the thrill, but seeing Qi Zhiyu so happy made her smile too.

But Qi Zhiyu wasn’t satisfied with just celebrating—she even made a Moments post about it and insisted Nan Xu give it a like.

Nan Xu obediently reached for her phone. When she opened her Moments, Qi Zhiyu’s post hadn’t shown up yet.

Instead, she saw a post from Xiang Weishi.

He had shared a meme of a dejected face, captioned: [When all your friends are in relationships and you’re still single.]

Below it, Wen Qi had replied: [Who broke your heart this time?]

Xiang Weishi replied: [Last night I asked you and Xie Hejing out for drinks—one said her partner’s at home was too strict, the other said he was going to find someone. Ha.]

[You and Xie Hejing both—just stay away from me.]

Xie Hejing: [?]

Wen Qi responded: [What’s a grown man being so dramatic for? Come drink tomorrow night.]

The next second, a message from Xie Hejing popped up on Nan Xu’s screen.

[Wen Qi asked us to go drinking with Xiang Weishi tomorrow night. Are you okay with that?]

A moment later, another message came in—this time from Wen Qi.

[Xuxu, come join us for drinks tomorrow night! You can come with Xie Hejing, and I’ll bring Wei Qingxuan. Xiang Weishi’s gonna lose it again, haha.]

Seeing that last line, Nan Xu couldn’t help but smile. After all this time, Wen Qi was still the same—always teasing Xiang Weishi for fun.

Tomorrow they were heading back home anyway. It’d be a good chance to meet up with everyone, so Nan Xu replied “okay” to both of them.

“Xuxu, you still haven’t liked my post yet?” Qi Zhiyu reminded her.

“I’m doing it, I’m doing it,” Nan Xu said quickly, reopening her Moments to give Qi Zhiyu’s post a like.

The two of them stayed curled up in the room all afternoon. Qi Zhiyu kept recommending her a bunch of dramas, and Nan Xu decided she’d jot them down for later—something to watch when she got bored.

That evening, as usual, Nan Xu went to the hot spring alone.

This time, Xie Hejing was late. When Nan Xu texted to ask where he was, he replied that he was still at the office.

Nan Xu frowned. By her estimate, it would take him at least another hour to get here, so she went back to the room and continued watching dramas with Qi Zhiyu.

By around 10:30 PM, Nan Xu was fighting sleep, her eyes half-closed as she stared at the TV. She tried to resist—she still hadn’t made up for what she owed Xie Hejing today.

But the show’s slow dialogue and gentle background music were far too soothing. Before long, Nan Xu dozed off.

Qi Zhiyu, ever thoughtful, quietly pulled a blanket over her.

When Nan Xu suddenly woke up, the room was pitch-black. The TV was off, and Qi Zhiyu was fast asleep beside her.

Nan Xu’s heart skipped a beat. She fumbled for her phone on the nightstand and checked the time.

11:45 PM.

Only fifteen minutes left before the day was over.

While she’d been asleep, Xie Hejing had sent her several messages—saying he’d already arrived at the resort and gone back to his room.

Nan Xu hadn’t replied to a single one.

As she sat there, the clock ticked on—46 minutes, 47…

She couldn’t waste another second. Nan Xu threw off the blanket, slipped quietly out of bed, and carefully avoided waking Qi Zhiyu. She dug through her bag and pulled out the room card Xie Hejing had given her last time.

After throwing on a jacket, she slipped out into the hallway and made her way toward his room.

By the time she swiped the card and pushed the door open, it was 11:50 PM.

Holding her phone tightly, Nan Xu didn’t even stop to think. She didn’t bother turning on the lights—just followed the dim glow from her screen as she stepped quietly into the room.

She didn’t know if Xie Hejing would rest here tonight.

But when she saw him lying in bed, fast asleep, Nan Xu let out a long breath of relief.

Thank goodness the day wasn’t over yet.
Thank goodness he hadn’t left.

Afraid of waking him, she moved carefully, inching closer until she was by his side. Then, she leaned in and brushed a light kiss against his lips—soft and fleeting, like the touch of a dragonfly skimming water.

Her “mission” accomplished, Nan Xu smiled with quiet satisfaction and turned to leave. But she wasn’t familiar with the layout of the room—she’d only taken a few steps when her leg bumped hard against the edge of a cabinet.

A dull pain shot up her knee. She hissed under her breath and glanced back at Xie Hejing, but he showed no signs of waking.

Rubbing her sore knee, she prepared to slip out again—but then a thought struck her.

He was asleep.
So how would he even know she had kissed him?

What if he didn’t believe her tomorrow?

Then she remembered how she’d left him alone in the hot spring the night before. She didn’t dare wake him now, but she needed proof—something to show she’d made it up to him.

Xie Hejing was still sound asleep. Testing it, Nan Xu flicked on the room’s light.

No reaction.

He must be sleeping deeply. Nan Xu’s heart leapt with delight.

She crept back to his bedside and bent down, deciding to take a picture of herself kissing him. That way, if he denied it tomorrow, she’d have evidence.

Standing by his head, Nan Xu fiddled with her phone for quite a while—testing angles, bending down to check if both their faces fit in the frame, debating whether to take a few trial shots first.

After some thought, she decided to just do it—take several from different angles and pick the best one later.

Everything went smoothly. Even when she accidentally bumped into him while leaning in, Xie Hejing didn’t wake up.

Seeing how deeply he slept, Nan Xu relaxed. She sat down on the sofa nearby and began flipping through the photos.

The first one—neither of their faces was visible.
Swipe.

The second—just her shoulder.
Swipe.

The third—couldn’t even tell she was kissing him.
Swipe.

. . . . .

The more she scrolled, the colder her heart sank.

Was her photography really this bad? Did she have to do it all over again?

Then, when she reached the seventh photo, her eyes lit up.

It was perfect.

The warm golden light cast a soft glow over everything. Xie Hejing’s head sank into the pillow, his hair slightly tousled.

Nan Xu leaned over him, her long hair sliding over one shoulder, a few strands brushing lightly against his neck.

Her eyes were closed as she kissed him—a tender, dreamlike moment frozen in time, like a still from a romantic film.

Nan Xu smiled, satisfied—until, a second later, she noticed something strange.

Pinching the screen, she zoomed in on his face.

Her gaze stopped on his eyes.

After staring for a couple of seconds, her heart skipped.

Those eyes…

They were open.

Not wide, but half-lidded, watching her quietly while she kissed him.

And because her own eyes had been closed at the time, she hadn’t noticed a thing.

Suddenly realizing something, she lifted her head—only to see Xie Hejing already sitting up, arms crossed, watching her. He’d clearly been awake for a while… long enough to enjoy the show of her picking through the photos.

Nan Xu’s heart lurched, and her phone almost slipped from her hand.

This look of his—he definitely hadn’t just woken up.

So everything she’d done earlier—posing, kissing, taking pictures—he’d seen it all?!

“Nan Xu,” his voice was low and cold, “are you done playing?”

In truth, Xie Hejing had been awake ever since she entered. He’d only kept his eyes shut to see what she would do.

But she’d only given him a quick kiss and then tried to leave quietly… She would rather take a photo than wake him up?

Was she that reluctant to kiss him when he was awake?

Hearing the edge in his tone, Nan Xu instantly realized she’d provoked him again. She scrambled to her feet. “Um, my task’s done for today. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Task?!

His brows darkened as he turned the word over in his mind.

Nan Xu was fast—she’d already reached the door when—

“Trying to run again?”

This time, Xie Hejing clearly wasn’t planning to let her go so easily. He reached out and caught her wrist in one swift motion.

Nan Xu didn’t even know where her strength—or courage—came from, but she tried to pry his fingers loose and insisted, “I already kissed you just now. The task’s complete. I even have photos as proof.”

Task?

He narrowed his eyes, the chill in his expression deepening.

His grip tightened without mercy as he yanked her back toward the bed. With a sudden pull, Nan Xu stumbled and fell onto the mattress. Her head spun; the impact made her heart pound wildly, her hair scattering messily across her face.

Almost instantly, Xie Hejing leaned over her, knees sinking into the mattress, his hands braced on either side of her head. Muscles tense, veins standing out along his forearms—she was completely trapped beneath him.

“You really think this is just a task?!”

He lowered his gaze and stared intently at Nan Xu, his eyes swirling with unwillingness and rage.

Nan Xu finally realized that word had set him off. Panicking, she stammered, “It’s not, it’s not a task.”

“Then what is it?” His gaze pinned her in place, emotions swirling dangerously in the depths of his eyes.

Nan Xu had never wished so hard that she could talk her way out of something, maybe then she could calm him down. But clearly, that wasn’t one of her strengths.

“It’s…” she hesitated, furrowing her brow. “It’s a promise. Yes, a promise.”

Her heart raced as she said it, hoping the word “promise” sounded a little better than “task”.

Xie Hejing clenched his jaw, his fingers gripping the bedsheet tightly on either side of Nan Xu.

“Tell me,” he said, voice low and rough, “if it weren’t for that promise—would you have ever kissed me on your own?”

“I…”

He always saw straight through her, whether she said the words out loud or not.

Her gaze faltered, sliding away from his.

She didn’t answer, but that silence was answer enough.

His breathing grew heavier.

Nan Xu, however, didn’t understand why he was angry.

Without that promise, kissing him really wouldn’t have been appropriate… right?

But she could tell he was on the edge of losing control—barely holding himself back. In a hurry, she tried to explain, “I just wanted to be responsible toward you. I can’t kiss you randomly, or touch you whenever I want. That wouldn’t be right, and besides—”

“You can.”

Nan Xu blinked. “What?”

She stared blankly at him, certain she’d misheard.

Grinding his teeth, Xie Hejing repeated, firmer this time, “I said, you can.”

“Nan Xu, what do I lack compared to the others?”

“I have money, a nice figure, and I can last longer.”

“You can ask other men for their WeChat, but you can’t kiss me?”

“You can go out of your way to help them, but you can’t touch me?”

“You can smile at them, but you can’t even want me?”

“Nan Xu—would it kill you to love me first, just once?”

Nan Xu still hadn’t caught up with what he was saying. She just stared at him, wide-eyed, voice trembling. “Those… those things aren’t even comparable, are they?”

Asking for someone’s contact and kissing them? Helping someone and touching them? Smiling and… that? How could those possibly be the same?

Xie Hejing leaned down closer. Heat rolled off him, surrounding her until she could hardly breathe.

“Don’t—don’t be like this,” she stammered, her pulse quickening.

But he didn’t listen. His body lowered further, his chest pressing against hers, his head burying itself in the crook of her neck.

“I don’t care,” he said hoarsely. “You said you liked me.”

Nan Xu froze.

Had she… said that? Maybe she had—at some point—but when?

“I did say that,” she murmured. “So what?”

So what?

There were moments when Xie Hejing swore he could just bite her to death—bury himself and her together, once and for all.

But this girl… she was afraid of pain.

Xie Hejing held her hand, guiding her fingertips to rest on his chest, and his voice softened considerably as he said, “Then prove it to me.”

Her eyes widened, and Nan Xu’s clear gaze was filled with confusion. Observing Xie Hejing, who seemed to be struggling to suppress something, she opened her mouth, but held back her words.

The room was so quiet that only the sound of each other’s breathing could be heard.

It wasn’t until Xie Hejing frowned and spoke again, “Nan Xu, I’m only giving you this one chance to prove it. Otherwise, tonight you might not be leaving this room, let alone this bed.”

His tone was cold, and the content shocking enough that Nan Xu was truly frightened. She asked, “How… how do I prove it?”

Xie Hejing released her hand, he needed Nan Xu to make the move first.

If Nan Xu wouldn’t be proactive, he would compel her to be.

Suddenly unrestrained, Nan Xu’s hand rested on his chest, neither knowing whether to advance nor retreat.

Anxiously, she asked, “What do I need to do?”

“Feel my heartbeat,” Xie Hejing guided her.

Nan Xu followed his instruction, shifting slightly, her touch brushing against the firm contours.

Xie Hejing moved closer, their breaths mingling, “Feel this rhythm and temperature. Follow this direction to explore.”

Nan Xu’s hand grew frantic, losing its sense of order.

This elicited a low groan from Xie Hejing’s throat.

Nan Xu was startled; her fingertips trembled uncontrollably, and she felt a strong urge to retreat.

“Good girl, don’t be afraid. Follow your instinct,” Xie Hejing’s gaze was fervent, his tone a gentle coaxing that held no room for refusal.

Nan Xu frowned, but recalling Xie Hejing’s previous words, she complied.

Xie Hejing stifled the moan threatening to escape his throat. He tilted his head back slightly, almost whispering, “Just a little further. Soon you’ll have the answer you want to know.”

Nan Xu held her breath, her long lashes fluttering, and she asked uncertainly, “Are you sure this is okay?”

But as she looked at the taut line of Xie Hejing’s neck and felt the air between them almost igniting,

This doesn’t feel quite right!

Xie Hejing’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed repeatedly.

Struggling for composure, he forced two words out from between his lips: “It is.”

Xie Hejing’s voice sounded like a final ultimatum. Nan Xu suspected that if she stopped at this moment, he might truly lose his temper with her.

She hardened her resolve, and her hand slid further…

. . . . .

…It was unimaginably scalding, and even seemed to be stirring. Xie Hejing gave a low hum near Nan Xu’s ear.

Instantly, Nan Xu’s face and neck flushed a deep red. Heat rushed over her body, and her fingertips began to tremble.

Xie Hejing, however, smiled, his voice husky and fatigued: “Nan Xu, that’s why you can’t say ‘fast’.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 42

Chapter 42 — Bite me, okay?

When Nan Xu and Qi Zhiyu had been sightseeing back in Zhi’an, they’d made detailed travel plans for every stop.

But this resort trip was different—they’d agreed it was going to be all about relaxation and going with the flow.

So neither of them had planned much ahead, which left them a bit at a loss about what to do this afternoon.

While having lunch in the restaurant, they happened to run into Cheng Keyi, who came over to greet them warmly and asked what plans they had for the day.

Nan Xu and Qi Zhiyu both admitted they hadn’t decided yet, though they did mention the scenery around the resort was lovely and they might just wander around.

Hearing they had no plans, Cheng Keyi glanced subtly at Qi Zhiyu.

He’d actually been hoping to sound her out about her feelings toward Xie Hejing—maybe even help Xie Hejing out a little—so he enthusiastically recommended one of the resort’s highlights: fishing.

The two women had heard about it before; apparently, any fish caught could be cooked for free by the resort’s kitchen.

But since neither of them had ever fished before, they hadn’t been particularly interested—until Cheng Keyi started describing it in vivid detail.

By the end of his persuasive little pitch, both of them were curious enough to give it a try.

Qi Zhiyu even declared confidently, “I’m catching ten fish today! Tonight we’re having fish soup, grilled fish—an entire fish feast!”

The pond was behind the resort, about a ten-minute walk along a winding path. It was an irregular oval shape, and when Nan Xu looked across the surface, she saw rolling hills covered in dense trees.

She took a deep breath, the air full of crisp freshness.

Guests could rent U-shaped lounge chairs from the resort, and there were also a few simple wooden fishing stools around the pond, each with a little shelf beside it for personal items.

By the time they arrived, quite a few guests were already seated and fishing.

To make it easier to “gather information,” Cheng Keyi led them to a more secluded spot.

But to his frustration, Qi Zhiyu spent the entire time chatting with Nan Xu, giving him nothing but vague, breezy answers whenever he tried to ask her questions.

When he asked what she thought of Xie Hejing—

“He’s nice. Pretty handsome.”

When he asked if they’d talked much—

“Not really.”

…And that was it.

Cheng Keyi began to wonder if he’d gotten the wrong person entirely. Wasn’t Qi Zhiyu the one Xie Hejing liked? Or had they maybe had a fight?

While he was busy overthinking, the two women were discussing whether they should move to another spot since they hadn’t caught anything yet.

“Xuxu, anything biting over there?” Qi Zhiyu sighed, watching her unmoving fishing line.

Nan Xu focused on the bobber floating on the water. Still no movement. “Nothing. Maybe we’re just unlucky today.”

They’d already been sitting there for nearly three hours. Apart from Cheng Keyi—who had managed to reel in two fish—both Nan Xu and Qi Zhiyu were completely empty-handed.

Qi Zhiyu finally couldn’t hold back. “President Cheng, are you sure this pond even has fish? Maybe there are only a few in here!”

Just then, Cheng Keyi’s bobber sank sharply beneath the water. He didn’t even bother replying—he jumped up in excitement and shouted, “Got one!”

Sure enough, when he pulled up the line, a half-kilo grass carp dangled from the hook.

After taking the fish off the hook and happily tossing it into the bucket, Cheng Keyi said, “Of course there are plenty. Before the resort opened, I personally arranged for several batches of fish fry to be released. There are even some big ones—just to make sure guests have a good experience.”

Hearing that, Qi Zhiyu slumped her shoulders in defeat. “Then I guess we really are out of luck if we can’t catch a single one.”

Meanwhile, Nan Xu wasn’t paying attention to their conversation. She lifted her phone to shield her eyes from the bright sunlight and sent a message to Xie Hejing.

[Are you at the resort right now?]

After pressing send, she let out a small sigh. There were only a few hours left in the day, and she still hadn’t seen Xie Hejing even once.

During their fishing trip, Nan Xu had made several excuses to go back to the lodge—claiming she needed the restroom—yet she never caught sight of him. Even his room showed no signs of being occupied, and she began to suspect he’d stayed at the company all night.

Sure enough, about two minutes later, his reply came in.

[Just finished a meeting at the office. I’ll come over today, but it’ll probably be a bit late.]

Seeing that, Nan Xu rubbed at her brow. A bit late—how late was that supposed to mean? Without a clear answer, she typed another message.

[Between nine and ten, Zhiyu and I are going to the hot springs. If you get back around that time, just wait for me in the room.]

When Xie Hejing read the words “just wait for me in the room”, a faint, teasing smile curved his lips. Then he replied—

[Assistant Nan, this message sounds suspiciously like you’re “hiding a beauty in a golden house.”]

Nan Xu’s lips quirked. Feeling a little playful, she sent back:

[Then President Xie had better be the “beauty” when the time comes.]

[?]

The question mark popped up instantly. Even through the screen, Nan Xu could almost picture his expression darkening, which made her burst out laughing.

Hearing her laugh, both Qi Zhiyu and Cheng Keyi turned to look.

Qi Zhiyu asked, “Xuxu, what’s so funny?”

Nan Xu froze for a moment. “Uh… I just saw a funny video.”

She turned toward Qi Zhiyu—and in her peripheral vision, she noticed the float in front of her starting to sink. She quickly said, “Zhiyu, reel it in! You’ve got a bite!”

Qi Zhiyu glanced down, and sure enough, after all this time, something had finally taken the bait. She was so excited she almost dropped the rod while reeling it in.

Cheng Keyi hurried to help, while Qi Zhiyu cheered herself on the entire time. Fortunately, the effort paid off—a two-jin fish came up thrashing at the end of the line.

Qi Zhiyu beamed from ear to ear. Over the next two hours, it was as if her luck had suddenly turned—she caught five or six more fish in a row, leaving Cheng Keyi completely astonished.

Meanwhile, Nan Xu sat frowning at her own empty bucket. Was her luck really that bad today?

She’d been there for five hours, and even the water in her bucket—prepared for fish—had started to evaporate, yet her line remained untouched.

Just as Qi Zhiyu reeled in her last fish, a sudden downpour came pouring from the sky, filling the air with the smell of wet earth and bringing their fishing trip to an abrupt end. Nan Xu, unfortunately, caught nothing.

The path back had turned muddy and slippery. What should have been a ten-minute walk stretched longer, with the sudden rain crowding the narrow trail.

The three of them hadn’t brought umbrellas, so they could only use their coats to barely cover their heads, waiting for the person ahead to get on the path before following them.

In front of them was a little child. The child wasn’t watching where they were going and was eager to catch up with the adult ahead.

In their haste, the child stepped on wet mud, their sole slipped, and their whole body started to fall backward.

Nan Xu was the first to notice this mishap and rushed over to catch the child.

Fortunately, she managed to catch them, and the child didn’t fall. However, Nan Xu slipped instead, resulting in two bruises on her knees, but she didn’t pay it much attention.

That night, when they were planning to soak in the hot springs, Qi Zhiyu suddenly got her period and wasn’t feeling well, so she decided to stay in the room and watch a show.

Nan Xu had been rained on that day. Although she had already showered upon their return, she still wanted to go for a soak.

She changed her clothes, chatted and laughed with Qi Zhiyu for a bit, and then casually chose a hot spring pool.

About twenty minutes later, Xie Hejing messaged her, saying he had arrived at the mountain resort, but instead of asking Nan Xu to come to his room, he gave her the location of a different pool.

Nan Xu knew this pool. The last time she and Qi Zhiyu were choosing pools, there were two that were closed to the public, and this was one of them.

The two of them had spent a good while guessing what kind of scenery might be inside.

When Nan Xu entered, she took an extra look around. The scenery was exquisitely arranged, with the trees and stones placed perfectly. Several stone lanterns stood by the pool, casting a soft glow that wasn’t harsh but perfectly illuminated the surroundings.

Xie Hejing was sitting in the pool, eyes closed in meditation, acting as if he didn’t know someone had come in.

Nan Xu didn’t make a sound either. She slowly sat down at the edge and gently splashed the water twice. After observing him for a long time, Xie Hejing still didn’t stir.

She bit her lip. Xie Hejing couldn’t possibly be unaware that she had entered, yet he hadn’t said a word or even opened his eyes. The only possibility was…

He was waiting for her to make the first move.

Thinking of this, Nan Xu let out a long sigh of relief, clenched her fists, and tried to cheer herself up.

She stood up and slowly walked toward Xie Hejing. Ripples spread across the water’s surface, but Xie Hejing remained with his eyes closed, as if he had entered a state of stillness right there.

Nan Xu bent down slightly, leaning close to Xie Hejing’s face, but didn’t immediately kiss him.

Her breath brushed against Xie Hejing’s face, and his eyelashes fluttered slightly. Two seconds later, he finally opened his eyes.

Seeing this, Nan Xu hesitated no longer. She lifted her hand, splashing water onto both of them.

She hooked one arm around Xie Hejing’s neck and rested the other on his shoulder, sliding it a bit further to cover the tattoo, then closed her eyes and kissed him.

Based on her last experience, Nan Xu was very careful with this kiss. Her tongue tentatively licked and gently enveloped him.

Xie Hejing did not close his eyes. His eyelids were half-raised, and his dark eyes were fixed intently on Nan Xu.

He watched her lightly fluttering eyelashes, her slightly flushed cheeks, and felt her trembling lips and nervous, rapid breathing.

Nan Xu had made considerable progress. Her tongue finally learned to tentatively enter Xie Hejing’s mouth, gently and timidly moving around. The sensation was delicate and soft.

Xie Hejing’s brow lifted slightly.

Suddenly, Xie Hejing remembered the message Nan Xu had sent him, telling him to be a little more “tender”.

His eyes filled with a doting indulgence. He raised his hand and held the one Nan Xu had rested on his shoulder.

The sudden movement made Nan Xu freeze. She stopped the kiss and asked softly, “What’s wrong?”

A faint smile curved at the corner of Xie Hejing’s lips, his eyes flickering with a dangerous kind of heat—so intense it felt like he might seize control at any second.

But the corners of his eyes were tinged with red, carrying traces of the kiss she’d just given him—a soft, flushed mark that somehow made him look both tempting and a little wrecked.

Nan Xu swallowed hard and quickly turned her gaze away.

Her reaction only made Xie Hejing more certain—she liked this.

His tone softened, low and coaxing. “Bite me… okay?”

The way he said it was pitifully tender, yet inexplicably seductive.

Nan Xu’s whole body trembled. “You—you…”

She couldn’t handle that kind of voice from him.

Xie Hejing lifted his gaze, suppressing a smile as his fingers brushed over her earlobe, already thinking about kissing it next time. His voice was still low and velvety. “Can’t you? Don’t want to?”

Her eyes flickered toward him, and she coughed lightly. “Bite… where?”

A few seconds later, she seemed to realize what she’d just said and quickly blurted out, “No—no, you only said I could kiss you. Nothing else.”

“Really?” Xie Hejing murmured, his gaze deepening. The hand that had been toying with her earlobe slid down to hook around her neck, pulling her gently into his arms.

Then he leaned in and bit softly at her lower lip—just enough to sting a little. The faint pain mixed with tingling warmth, dragging Nan Xu straight into a dizzy, breathless desire.

Her eyes grew hazy.

“Like that…”

He released her lips, watching her reactions closely, then took her hand and guided it to the side of his face.

With his lashes lowered and a teasing tilt at the corner of his eyes, he brushed her palm lightly, moving closer as if surrendering himself to her completely.

“Go on. Bite me.”

Nan Xu’s gaze trembled.

That voice—it was like the hook from their afternoon fishing, tugging again and again at her heart until her breathing turned unsteady. “Then… okay.”

She took a slow breath, trying to steady the pounding in her chest, then leaned in once more.

Her lips met his again as she carefully mimicked his earlier movements, nibbling gently.

After a while, she felt his fingers tighten around her wrist. She pulled back slightly and asked, “Did it hurt?”

She stared at his lips. There weren’t any visible marks—she’d been very careful.

He didn’t answer, just smiled and asked, “Have you figured out what I wanted you to think about yesterday?”

Nan Xu froze. She’d gone straight to bed after returning home, slept soundly, spent the morning wandering the villa with Qi Zhiyu, and then went fishing in the afternoon. She’d completely forgotten whatever that “thing” was.

But she couldn’t admit that. Who knew what he’d say if she did?

Putting on a calm face, she nodded. “Yeah. You meant I should stop saying ‘fast,’ right?”

The look on his face told her he knew she hadn’t given it a moment’s thought.

Her eyes darted away nervously, yet she stubbornly held his gaze.

Xie Hejing sighed, pinching her cheek lightly. “Nan Xu, how are you so cute? Makes me want to bite you.”

Nan Xu’s face scrunched up at once. “Why do you always want to bite me?” she grumbled in protest.

“Alright, no biting then,” Xie Hejing replied casually. “Let’s continue.”

Nan Xu let out a small yelp. “Wait—today’s kiss isn’t over yet?”

At that, Xie Hejing’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Are you sure it’s over?”

The chill in his gaze—the quiet, dangerous intensity between his brows—was the Xie Hejing she was familiar with.

She couldn’t help but think that the Xie Hejing who had just now rested his face so obediently in her hand must’ve been momentarily possessed.

The thought amused her, and before she could stop herself, she broke into laughter—soft at first, then uncontrollable, her shoulders trembling as she laughed right in front of him.

Xie Hejing’s expression darkened. “You still dare to laugh?”

Maybe it was because she’d been the one to make the first move this time—he didn’t restrain her. Instead, she managed to slip out of his arms with surprising ease.

Standing by the edge of the pool, Nan Xu turned back to glance at him. His expression was cold, his eyes sharp. Flustered, she stammered,

“Um… tomorrow, then. Anyway, we already kissed today.”

And before he could react, she bolted—leaving Xie Hejing behind, struggling to suppress his body’s involuntary response.

A shadow crossed his eyes as he recalled her words. Then he let out a low, humorless chuckle.

“Tomorrow, huh?”

He leaned back slightly, voice low and dangerous. “Let’s see if you can still laugh tomorrow.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 41

Chapter 41 — Like your lover, a secret one…

“Nan Xu, look into my eyes and tell me, you just want to confirm if you have a desire for me or not.”

Xie Hejing quietly watched Nan Xu, emphasizing the words “for me” especially heavily.

Nan Xu’s eyes slowly shifted, meeting Xie Hejing’s gaze. Her lips parted slightly, but then she pressed them shut again.

“Don’t want to talk?” Xie Hejing took a deep breath and changed his approach. “Then tell me, everything you just said was spoken out of anger.”

Nan Xu was finally willing to speak up, but she asked, “Which sentence are you referring to?”

Xie Hejing gritted his teeth, “All of it.”

The thought of everything she had just said made Nan Xu’s nerves jump. She blinked hard twice and cleared her throat: “It’s all because you scared me for no reason.”

Hearing this, Xie Hejing was amused, “For no reason? Who told me in the middle of the night that she wanted to confirm her sexual desire?”

“I…” Nan Xu opened her mouth, but couldn’t figure out how to refute him. After a long while, she finally said, “I might have been possessed by a sudden impulse at that moment.”

Xie Hejing wouldn’t give her a chance to evade.

“Nan Xu, you have to own up to what you say. We’ll try it when we go back today.”

“Try what?” Nan Xu’s eyebrows shot up.

“What do you think?”

One of Xie Hejing’s hands slowly twisted his tie, while the other rested on Nan Xu’s waist, lightly giving it a pinch.

Nan Xu instantly tensed up all over, pushing back on the back of Xie Hejing’s hand with hers, signaling him to stop.

“Nan Xu, don’t mess with me. I don’t believe you’d discuss this kind of thing with anyone else.”

Xie Hejing narrowed his eyes. The hand hanging at her waist turned over, taking hold of hers and guiding it onto his body.

“You should first get familiar with my body,” Xie Hejing said very naturally, as if he had thought about this many times before.

As her hand first covered his chest, Nan Xu subconsciously curled her fingers.

Xie Hejing pried her fingers open again. Next came his abs, and Nan Xu’s breath hitched.

She remembered he’d said last time that he was going to get a tattoo there, and she didn’t know if he actually did. Nan Xu didn’t dare to look or ask.

She just gripped his hand with a little force, signaling him not to continue.

Noticing the pressure on his hand, Xie Hejing seemed to be reminded of something. He stared at his and Nan Xu’s hands for a long time, then suddenly spoke.

“Nan Xu, do you want to try my hand? I think my hand has only ever held yours…”

As soon as he finished speaking, he clearly felt Nan Xu’s fingertips tighten considerably, so he smiled faintly: “We’ll try it when we get home today.”

A hand has many uses; he just didn’t know which one Nan Xu would prefer.

Hearing him say they were going back today, Nan Xu quickly refused: “No, I promised Yuyu that I would play with her at the resort; I can’t break my word.”

Upon hearing this, Xie Hejing tilted his head back, resting against the back seat, and his tone was slightly cold: “It seems you only break your word to me.”

“When have I ever?” Nan Xu retorted somewhat anxiously.

Xie Hejing: “…”

“Alright, I won’t interrupt your fun,” he said, then asked, “How long are you guys planning to stay here?”

Nan Xu lowered her gaze and thought for a moment. “Five or six… maybe three or four days. Not sure yet.”

They hadn’t made a definite plan—it really depended on whether the place could hold their interest. If it turned out boring, they’d probably leave sooner.

“Also…” Nan Xu’s frown slowly eased. “I really do want to talk to you about… that, but…”

She didn’t know how to put it into words. She couldn’t just say, If I don’t feel anything for you, we should go our separate ways, could she?

Like in that movie.

But wouldn’t that be too irresponsible of her? Nan Xu bit her lip, trying to think of a better solution.

Her thoughts were tangled like a mess of threads, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t think of anything. The more anxious she got, the harder she bit her lip.

Xie Hejing frowned when he saw it. He reached out, gently pinched her cheek, and freed her lip from her teeth.

Sensing her hesitation, he spoke decisively. “One month, Nan Xu. Let’s just give it one month. If there’s really nothing by then, we’ll end it.”

His tone was firm, serious—like he truly meant it. Their relationship would come down to this one month.

After that, if Nan Xu really felt nothing for him, they’d both walk away.

But… could they really do that?

Nan Xu swallowed and asked again, just to be sure. “You’re sure? If after a month I still don’t feel anything for you, we’ll break up?”

Xie Hejing’s gaze flickered. His hand curled slightly into a fist before he looked away from her eyes.

His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard, a small giveaway that his emotions weren’t as calm as they seemed.

He didn’t say yes. Instead, he said quietly, “It’s the best way, isn’t it? Unless you want things to stay the way they are.”

That blurry, undefined stage between them—neither close nor distant.

It was driving him crazy. He couldn’t truly have her, but he couldn’t stand to let her go either.

“Okay,” Nan Xu answered softly.

She stopped running away from it, stopped worrying about what might come after opening this Pandora’s box.

She just wanted to slowly sort out the tangled feelings between them.

“Then… can we start after I leave the resort and get back home?” she asked.

“Sure,” Xie Hejing agreed with a nod.

After a pause, he added, “I’ll be staying here for the next few days too.”

Nan Xu blinked, a little alarmed. “You’re staying here too?”

Xie Hejing’s brows lowered slightly, his tone carrying a hint of danger. “What, you don’t want me around?”

“No, it’s not that,” Nan Xu said quickly.

She was just afraid—afraid he might get worked up again, like last time.

Besides, before anything was officially confirmed between them, she didn’t want others to see the complicated, ambiguous thing that existed between them.

Xie Hejing knew her too well. With just one frown or downward glance, he could tell what she wasn’t saying.

“Don’t worry,” he said quietly. “No one will know.”

“But this way,” Nan Xu said quietly, “it really feels like I’m your lover… a secret one, at that.”

The corners of Xie Hejing’s lips lifted into the faintest smile. His eyes lowered, hiding whatever emotion flickered there.

His voice was calm, almost indifferent, but Nan Xu thought he sounded a little hurt. She opened her mouth, wanting to comfort him, when he suddenly added,
“Not bad. Kinda thrilling, actually.”

Nan Xu: “…”

For a moment, she just stared at him in speechless disbelief.

Seeing her brief daze, Xie Hejing’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he quickly shifted his expression, adopting a different tone—one that carried a hint of grievance.

“But at least,” he said softly, “you owe me a little compensation for these next few days.”

Nan Xu didn’t notice the subtle change in his expression. She thought for a second—if it wasn’t something unreasonable, she could probably agree.

“What kind of compensation?” she asked.

Xie Hejing raised an eyebrow and curved his lips into a teasing smile. “For every day you stay at the resort, you have to come kiss me once.”

Nan Xu’s brows shot up. “You—”

What kind of ridiculous request was that?!

“Or,” Xie Hejing added unhurriedly, “I can kiss you instead—if you’re not afraid of getting caught.”

He went on, his tone deepening slightly. “And if you really want to confirm whether you feel desire for me, then this month… we can’t just stop at this level. Nan Xu, everything I said earlier—I’ll be testing all of it in this one month.”

His gaze darkened.

“When the time comes…”

Be ready.

Seeing her questioning look, he coughed lightly and clarified, “Kissing is just the most basic part. Think of it as… an early adaptation phase.”

His tone was businesslike, as if he were laying out a project timeline, which only made Nan Xu even more exasperated.

Nan Xu: “…”

Her mind spun fast, but she couldn’t deny—he did have a point. So she finally nodded. “Alright.”

When Nan Xu went back to her room, changed clothes, and was about to head out, Qi Zhiyu came through the door.

Humming a tune, she flopped onto the sofa and stretched lazily.

Nan Xu looked up. “Yuyu, you’re back so soon?”

Qi Zhiyu pulled a face. “That handsome guy left early. I figured it’s boring without you, and it’s freezing out there anyway. So I came back to get you—let’s just go soak in the hot springs together.”

“Sure,” Nan Xu said, tidying up her things. She sat down at the vanity and started removing her makeup while chatting with Qi Zhiyu.

Rubbing her face, Qi Zhiyu sighed. “Xuxu, how do you think I should go after that handsome guy?”

She set her phone aside; the screen lit up, showing the guy’s social media feed—photos of skiing and cooking. Qi Zhiyu was clearly trying to decide where to start.

Nan Xu looked surprised. “You’ve already decided? You’re going to chase him that fast?”

Qi Zhiyu sent the handsome guy a photo of herself hiking, then turned to Nan Xu and said, “Yeah, you know, when it comes to these things—doing it fast has its thrill, taking it slow has its charm.”

“You’re probably the slow type. I’m not. I need instant feedback—otherwise, I feel like I’m just wasting my time.”

Nan Xu was washing her face as she listened, and she nodded slightly.

She really was the slow type.

But what about Xie Hejing?

Was he the same—willing to “waste time” on her?

Around 9:40, the two of them found a small hot spring pool. They brought along some fruit, chatting and snacking as they soaked.

When Nan Xu stepped into the water and slowly sat down, the warmth rose past her shoulders. The thick mist surrounded her, melting away the chill of the night.

But then, a faint lingering sensation brushed the inside of her thigh—just enough to pull her mind straight back to what Xie Hejing had done a few hours ago.

Her face flushed instantly. The heat from the steam only made it worse, and she felt her breath hitch.

To distract herself, she picked up her phone, planning to play something soft and soothing—maybe some music to help her relax, forget about that moment, and just unwind before going to sleep.

But right then, a message from Xie Hejing popped up.

[Let me know when you’re back. I’ll be waiting by the right stairwell. Got something for you.]

Nan Xu froze for a second, then simply replied:

[Okay.]

By the time they got back to the rooms, Qi Zhiyu was already half-asleep, too drowsy to notice that Nan Xu had fallen a few steps behind. She only wanted to get into bed as soon as possible.

Nan Xu called after her, “Yuyu, you go ahead and rest first. I… need to check something at the front desk.”

Qi Zhiyu turned around, puzzled. “Something wrong?”

“No, nothing,” Nan Xu said quickly. “Go ahead and sleep. I’ll be right back.”

Qi Zhiyu yawned. “Alright, I’m going to bed then. But hey—it’s late. Be careful, okay?” she reminded.

“Got it. Go on, you can barely keep your eyes open,” Nan Xu teased.

Once she saw Qi Zhiyu enter the room, Nan Xu finally turned and walked toward the stairwell on the right.

Xie Hejing was already there, though she couldn’t tell how long he’d been waiting. He leaned casually against the wall, one hand in his pocket, a cigarette loosely hanging from his lips, the other hand spinning a lighter between his fingers.

When he saw her, he immediately stubbed out the cigarette and waved away the faint smell of smoke.

“You’re here.”

Nan Xu got straight to the point. “What did you want to give me?”

Xie Hejing arched an eyebrow, smiling slightly. “So impatient? You don’t even want to talk for a bit first?”

“Yuyu’s waiting for me,” Nan Xu said, a little flustered.

“Right,” he said with a hint of mock jealousy. “Someone’s waiting for you.”

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small card, handing it to her.

Nan Xu glanced at the card—it looked similar to her room key, though the color was a few shades darker. The surface had delicate engravings, and the resort’s logo was embossed at the top.

She asked, “Is this your room key?”

Xie Hejing chuckled. “Whose else would it be? You think I’d hand you someone else’s key?”

Nan Xu: “…”

“Then why are you giving it to me?”

The faint smell of smoke around him had nearly faded when he took a step closer and said plainly, “To give you more… opportunities.”

“I won’t necessarily stay in the resort all the time,” he explained. “Sometimes I’ll sleep here, sometimes I’ll leave at night. My schedule’s not fixed.”

“Not fixed?!” Nan Xu blinked in surprise. “Then how am I supposed to find you every day—to, you know, fulfill your ‘compensation’?”

A glint of mischief flashed in Xie Hejing’s eyes. “Well, then you’ll just have to work hard, won’t you?”

“…Fine,” Nan Xu muttered. “I’ll do my best.”

What was she supposed to do—track his every move?

She lowered her gaze, biting her lip a little, uneasy about the uncertainty of the next few days.

Holding the key card, she remembered the conversation she’d had with Qi Zhiyu earlier, and after a pause, she asked, “About this next month… what kind of person are you, emotionally speaking? Are you the fast type or the slow type?”

Since she had agreed to spend this month figuring out their relationship, she wanted to treat it seriously—and maybe adjust her own pace to match his.

If he was slow, that was manageable. But if he was fast… she wasn’t sure she could keep up. Maybe she’d have to show some kind of reaction—but what kind, exactly? She’d have to ask Qi Zhiyu tomorrow.

But before she could say more, Xie Hejing answered without hesitation.

“Lover,” he said, tilting his chin slightly. “Yours.”

Nan Xu opened her mouth, flustered. “That’s not what I meant. I’m asking—”

Before she could finish, he leaned in and brushed a kiss against the corner of her lips, his voice low and lingering.

“A lover’s first kiss,” he murmured. “And as for the word fast… you’d better not use it too lightly.”

“Why?” Nan Xu asked, blinking.

Xie Hejing let out a soft laugh. “Think about it. I’ll check your answer tomorrow.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 40

Chapter 40 — What we’re about to do… isn’t something a brother would do

The moment Nan Xu saw him, her scalp tingled, and a buzzing filled her head.

All she could hear was the wind in her ears. Her tongue felt dry and heavy in her mouth, unable to form a single word.

Even her strength seemed to drain away. Her fingers slackened; the phone slipped from her grasp and hit the floor with a dull thud. It was the handsome guy who bent down to pick it up and hand it back to her.

Nan Xu’s “thank you” came out stiff and awkward, enough to make the guy glance at her in mild surprise.

Seeing that, Xie Hejing let out a short laugh—yet there was no trace of warmth in it. It was like the sound of thin ice cracking underfoot, dragging her straight into the freezing depths below.

A sharp chill surged toward her from every direction.

Nan Xu quickly averted her eyes, desperately trying to pretend she hadn’t felt that piercing cold.

Once the guy finished scanning the code, Nan Xu lowered her head, deliberately avoiding Xie Hejing’s gaze, and forced herself to walk back the same way she came.

She didn’t even know how she managed to make it back to her seat under the weight of his stare—her every step felt stiff, mechanical.

Qi Zhiyu, meanwhile, was over the moon, gushing over the new message from the handsome guy—praising Nan Xu one moment, asking what to reply the next. She was so busy she could barely sit still.

Nan Xu’s mind, however, was blank. Every thought she had spun uncontrollably toward Xie Hejing. She could only reply to Qi Zhiyu on instinct, her fingers moving without focus.

When she finally gathered the courage to glance back in that direction, Xie Hejing was gone.

Even so, Nan Xu didn’t feel the slightest relief. Her heart was a jumble, pounding uneasily as she wondered from where—and when—he might reappear.

Should she go find him first?

But after a moment’s hesitation, she dismissed the idea.

The endless guessing and tangled thoughts left her restless. She clasped her hands together, turned slightly to the side, and lifted her cup, hoping the warm water would steady her nerves.

But when she set it down, something went wrong. She hadn’t noticed the edge of the table, and the bottom of the cup caught it halfway down. The next instant, half the water spilled straight onto her.

At first, the heat spread across her skin—but once the night breeze brushed past, it turned instantly to cold. She shivered.

Qi Zhiyu jumped up, quickly putting down her phone. “Xuxu! Are you okay? Did it burn you?”

Nan Xu shook her head. “It’s fine, the water wasn’t that hot. Just got my dress wet. You keep playing, I’ll go clean up a bit.”

“Want me to come with you?” Qi Zhiyu asked, worried.

“No need.” Nan Xu bent down and whispered close to her ear, “That colleague of yours just left the handsome guy’s side. You might have a chance to talk to him alone now.”

At that, Qi Zhiyu turned to look—and sure enough, the annoying woman was gone. Her eyes lit up at once.

“Okay! Then message me when you’re back. We’ll go to the hot spring later.” She smoothed her hair, already looking excited.

“Got it.”

The gathering was outdoors, while their rooms were in another building. Nan Xu planned to head straight back and change out of her wet dress.

The walk wasn’t far.

Streetlights lined both sides of the mountain villa’s road, so even at night, Nan Xu could see clearly without needing any other light.

But she hadn’t walked far from the party when an arm suddenly dropped onto her shoulder. Instantly, it felt as if an icy wind had swept through her bones.

Nan Xu had a good guess who it was. Sure enough—he hadn’t left.

Two seconds later, Xie Hejing’s voice came from above her head.

“Nan Xu, did you have fun tonight?”

Nan Xu flinched hard, the tiny hairs on her arms standing on end. Her heart felt like it had been seized by an invisible hand, squeezing so tight she could barely breathe.

Her throat refused to work—no words came out, no matter how hard she tried.

“No answer?” Xie Hejing’s tone remained calm.

But Nan Xu knew this calm was the prelude to a storm—heavy, suffocating, and laced with dread.

The hand on her shoulder bent, his thumb and forefinger catching her chin. His palm slid up to her slender neck, lifting her head until she was forced to meet his gaze.

In the darkness, she could still see his eyes clearly—cold and bottomless, like a still pool concealing a serpent beneath the surface, staring straight at her from the depths.

Nan Xu drew in a sharp breath. “B-brother… brother.”

Her voice broke and trembled as she forced the words out.

Xie Hejing gave a low, mocking laugh between his teeth, raising an eyebrow at her choice of address.

“Still calling me ‘brother’? What we’re about to do… isn’t something a brother would do.”

Nan Xu’s lashes quivered, rapid and trembling. Her fingers unconsciously tightened around the hem of her dress, eyes glistening. “You can’t…”

Xie Hejing’s lips curled into a chilling half-smile. He brushed a casual kiss over her eyelid and asked softly, “Can’t what?”

“Would you rather the room—or the car?”

Her voice was barely a whisper, yet it took all her strength to say, “…I’m not going.”

A shadow of malice flickered in Xie Hejing’s eyes before it quickly vanished.

He reached out to smooth a loose strand of her hair. “How many times is this now, Nan Xu? The third? The fourth?”

Nan Xu couldn’t answer. She could only tug weakly at his sleeve, trying to make him loosen his grip—trying, somehow, to show him she didn’t want to go.

But her strength was nothing against his. His hand remained locked around her, holding her still.

Only then did Nan Xu realize—Xie Hejing had never fully revealed the dangerous side of himself. He had been drawing her closer, bit by bit, until she was already too deep.

And now… how far had she fallen?

“Not choosing?” His tone was light, almost casual. “Then we’ll take the car. It’s closer.”

He released her chin, brushed her hair one last time, then gripped her shoulder and guided her toward his car.

The black vehicle loomed ahead—like a beast hidden in the dark, waiting to devour her whole.

Nan Xu’s heart pounded violently in her chest.

“Brother, didn’t we say we were going to talk about something?” she swallowed hard. “We can go to a coffee shop to talk.”

“Mhm, let’s go inside and talk.”

Xie Hejing simply wouldn’t listen to her.

He opened the car door and, without giving her a chance to argue, stuffed Nan Xu into the back seat.

The familiar scent in the car instantly startled Nan Xu. She quickly turned, braced herself against the car door, and feeling that wasn’t enough, also pushed against it with her foot, refusing to let Xie Hejing close the door.

Xie Hejing lowered his gaze, his eyes lingering on the back of Nan Xu’s hand for a moment. He could have just directly pried her fingers open.

But he didn’t. Instead, he used his fingertips to leisurely pick her fingers off one by one, letting Nan Xu’s sliver of hope slowly vanish.

Then, with effortless ease, he guided her legs fully into the car.

When Xie Hejing slid into the car, the interior space immediately became incredibly confined, like a suffocating cage with the air sucked out.

The car lights weren’t on, and a sliver of light filtered in from outside the window, illuminating one side of Xie Hejing’s face while the other was submerged in shadow.

Nan Xu swallowed nervously.

A suffocating silence permeated the car compartment.

After a few seconds of quiet, Xie Hejing patted his leg: “Sit here.”

Nan Xu glared: “Impossible!” she bit out, reminding him, “I’m wearing a skirt.”

Xie Hejing’s eyes narrowed slightly, letting out a short, cold laugh: “I know.”

Seeing that Nan Xu was still uncooperative, Xie Hejing moved closer, placed a hand on Nan Xu’s waist, pulled her into his embrace, and parted her tightly clenched legs.

“Nan Xu, why are you always so disobedient?”

The coldness spread from her legs to her whole body without hindrance. Nan Xu tensed up completely, fear and panic almost overwhelming her, leaving only one thought frantically echoing in her mind: What exactly is he going to do?

Xie Hejing’s voice, however, was very gentle; there was barely a trace of anger.

“Tell me,” he lifted his chin, “who are you sexually attracted to?”

Nan Xu avoided his gaze, trying hard to brace her legs to create a bit of distance between them.

But her small action didn’t escape Xie Hejing’s sight. He lifted his hand, hooked it around her lower back, and abruptly pressed her back against him.

They were suddenly pressed tightly together.

Nan Xu’s eyes widened.

Xie Hejing’s face, however, was calm: “Did you take a liking to that guy just now?”

“Added him on WeChat, what’s next? Will you kiss him too? Will you also sit on him like this?”

Xie Hejing lifted his leg slightly, causing Nan Xu’s upper body to lean even further towards him.

He grabbed Nan Xu’s chin again, forcing her closer until she could almost see her own helpless reflection in his eyes.

Through gritted teeth, he demanded, “Do you feel desire for him?”

Nan Xu drew in a sharp breath. She already knew she wouldn’t escape tonight. A reckless thought flashed through her mind—fine, if it’s going to be ugly, then let it be.

“It’s none of your business,” she shot back, locking eyes with Xie Hejing. “Who I want—it has nothing to do with you!”

In an instant, veins stood out on the back of his hands and along his neck, as if a wild beast inside him was seconds away from breaking free.

But Xie Hejing only gave a cold snort. “Is that so?” His tone was icy calm.

Nan Xu’s fists tightened. She didn’t care anymore. “Yeah. I could want anyone—but never you.”

Xie Hejing’s gaze sharpened. He loosened his tie, grabbed both her hands, forced them behind her back, and slowly wrapped the tie around them.

His voice was frighteningly cold. “That so?”

The restraint only made Nan Xu angrier. “Yes! I’m going to confirm it with someone else. Maybe a stranger, maybe someone I used to know—but it’ll never be you!”

His whole body trembled as he pulled the knot tight, then suddenly hauled her into his arms. His burning gaze locked on hers. “Nan Xu,” he warned, voice low and trembling with fury, “you’d better stop talking.”

Seeing the rage in his eyes, a strange thrill shot through her.

So he could lose control. He was angry. Good—he deserved it, after scaring her like that.

“I’ll say it again,” she shouted, louder this time. “Xie Hejing, I will never, ever feel any desire for you. Never!”

“Nan Xu, shut up,” he ground out between his teeth.

But she wouldn’t. “I won’t, because it’s the truth! That will never change!”

Xie Hejing’s hand clamped around the back of her neck. “Nan Xu!”

His gaze burned into her throat; a dark impulse flared within him—he wanted to squeeze, to silence her, to make her promise to stay by his side forever.

His hand brushed her neck, but he couldn’t bring himself to use force.

His chest rose and fell violently. He was furious—at her, at himself.

Feeling his hand trembling against her skin, Nan Xu shuddered and yelled with all her strength, “Xie Hejing, I hate you!”

The words hit him like a blow to the heart.

His expression darkened. In a burst of rage, he seized her lips and kissed her hard.

He pried her mouth open, biting, devouring, every movement charged with anger and desperation.

One of his hands clamped tightly around Nan Xu’s waist, pressing her hard against his chest—so hard it felt like he was trying to crush her into himself.

Her lips hurt. Her waist hurt. She tried to kick, but their bodies were pressed so tightly together that she couldn’t muster any strength.

“Mmph—!” Her muffled protests were lost between them. Their teeth tangled; Xie Hejing grew more and more out of control, and Nan Xu felt her breath slipping away—she was suffocating under the force of his kiss.

Driven by instinct, she bit down on his lip—hard. She tasted blood, sharp and metallic, and realized she’d drawn it from both of them.

Finally, he let go.

Nan Xu saw the blood on his lips and turned her face away, struggling to get off him. But his grip was unyielding—no matter how she kicked or twisted, she couldn’t break free.

Suddenly, she gasped sharply, her whole body jerking in pain, her face tightening in discomfort.

Xie Hejing forced himself to calm down. “What is it?” he asked.

“None of your business,” she snapped.

His brow furrowed. “You sure you want to keep talking to me like that?”

The memory of that suffocating kiss flashed in her mind again, and fear flickered through her.

“My leg hurts,” Nan Xu muttered, sniffling slightly, her voice tinged with frustration and embarrassment.

“Where?” he asked.

“My leg,” she repeated.

“Which part?”

She fell silent, refusing to answer.

He shifted his leg in irritation, and she immediately gasped again, trembling.

Xie Hejing looked down. Nan Xu tried to block his view, but her hands were still bound behind her with his tie—she couldn’t move.

Her voice broke with a cry: “Don’t look! Let me go!”

“Easy,” he said, his tone softening. “Let me see where you’re hurt.”

“No,” she protested, her voice trembling. “I’m wearing a skirt.”

His eyes flickered. “I can tell.”

“You—” Nan Xu’s cheeks flushed bright red.

She was terrified he’d actually look. “My leg… the inside of my thigh… your belt scraped it.”

At her words, his breathing deepened, heavy and uneven.

“I need to check if it’s bleeding,” he said hoarsely.

“I’ll check myself!” she shouted quickly.

She pressed her legs tightly against Xie Hejing’s, absolutely preventing him from seeing.

Xie Hejing’s breathing grew heavier. “Nan Xu, if you keep this up, and I lose control later… don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“What did I do…”

Nan Xu’s voice trailed off as she realized what Xie Hejing was referring to. She immediately stopped moving, stiffened, and didn’t dare to budge.

An uncontrolled kiss from Xie Hejing was already like that; she didn’t dare to imagine anything more. If he went further, she…

Nan Xu closed her eyes, shaking her head with lingering fear, and managed to squeeze out three words: “I won’t move.”

Xie Hejing laid her flat on the back seat. He didn’t turn on the light but quietly looked at the spot. There was no bleeding, just a few slight red marks from friction.

Feeling Xie Hejing’s breath evenly tracing the sensitive area, Nan Xu’s face was practically crimson.

“Are you done? You…”

The next second, Nan Xu couldn’t speak anymore. The warm breath had turned into a sticky touch, wetness mixing with light nibbling.

Fine beads of sweat broke out on her forehead, her heart and legs were trembling.

Nan Xu instinctively tried to press her legs together, but on her inner thigh, she felt his slightly tickling hair.

Xie Hejing chuckled softly, his breath fanning out: “Nan Xu, how will you know you don’t desire me if you don’t try?”

She dared not provoke Xie Hejing now, only saying: “No need to try, no need.”

“Then how about going higher?” Xie Hejing asked. “Try kissing there? Maybe you’ll feel something?”

Higher than that…

Wouldn’t that be…

Nan Xu’s voice was sharp for the first time: “No!”

She was incredibly anxious, truly afraid Xie Hejing wouldn’t listen to her. She wanted to strain to look at Xie Hejing, but a pile of clothing blocked her view.

She could, however, feel his breathing, which was hot and fast.

She truly grasped just how crazed Xie Hejing was tonight.

Based on that sharp cry, Xie Hejing knew the girl had reached her limit, and pushing further would be too much.

He sighed almost imperceptibly, a hint of regret in the sound.

Reluctantly, he stood up, pursed his lips, and picked her up, saying in a low voice: “Nan Xu, you haven’t even tried, how do you know you don’t desire me?”

“You’ve only ever kissed me. Can you really judge that you don’t desire me based on just that?” Xie Hejing stared at her and asked.

Nan Xu bit her lower lip: “But you just now, that wasn’t, wasn’t…”

She couldn’t bring herself to say it.

Xie Hejing heard this and smiled: “Then what about other places? Nan Xu, don’t you want to try my other parts? Maybe then you’d feel something?”

Seeing her head drop lower and her ear tips turn completely red, Xie Hejing seemed to realize something and asked: “Perhaps you already have feelings, but you’re just afraid for me to notice.”

The words had barely fallen when Nan Xu suddenly lifted her head: “No! Absolutely not!”

“Oh, is that so?” Xie Hejing raised an eyebrow. “I was just talking.”

The car became silent enough to hear a pin drop once more.

Xie Hejing recalled all the things Nan Xu had said earlier, a muscle in his brow twitching. “Nan Xu, your impulsiveness can really make people angry.”

He pried her hand loose, pressed her palm to his chest, and asked, “Can you feel my heartbeat?”

Nan Xu nodded.

He continued, “Do you know when it beats the fastest?”

She shook her head.

“Want to know?” Xie Hejing asked.

Nan Xu didn’t reply—something told her that whatever came next would be too much for her to handle.

But Xie Hejing wanted her to ask. He shifted slightly, his fingers brushing over the spot where a faint red mark remained, making Nan Xu’s breath hitch as she listened intently to his next words.

Xie Hejing repeated softly, “Do you know when my breathing sounds the best—or where my heartbeat is the fastest?”

Nan Xu swallowed, her voice barely above a whisper as she asked on cue, “Where?”

Xie Hejing toyed with her hand, his fingertips gliding lightly over the mark on her skin. His voice was low and languid as always.

“—In bed.”

Lower Your Voice – Chapter 39

Chapter 39 — Nan Xu, you better not let me catch you

[Desire? You sure you want to talk about that in the middle of the night?]
[Nan Xu, explain yourself—why did you suddenly bring that up?]
[Nan Xu, who are you trying to confirm “desire” with? Who do you feel desire for?]
[Nan Xu, it’s only been a few days and you’ve grown bold, huh?]
[Nan Xu, aside from Qi Zhiyu, who else have you seen these past few days?]
[Nan Xu, who’s been flirting with you?]

When Nan Xu still didn’t reply, Xie Hejing sent another one:
[Nan Xu, you better not let me catch you.]

When Nan Xu woke up, it was already afternoon. The first thing she saw when she opened her eyes was that pile of unread messages.

Still groggy, she blinked her sore eyes, lazily pushed back her messy hair, and slid her finger across the screen.

The more she read, the more her heart pounded.

After nearly a minute, the events of last night came rushing back to her—what she had said, what she had actually said to Xie Hejing.

Watching the messages keep popping up one after another, she could practically hear his cold voice in her mind and couldn’t help shivering.

Then she noticed the timestamps.

Wait—had Xie Hejing really stayed up all night, not sleeping at all since their call?

At that thought, Nan Xu quickly typed a reply:

[No, you’ve got it wrong. It’s not what you think. It’s hard to explain over text—let’s talk in person after the break.]

She exhaled sharply as soon as she hit send, then tossed her phone aside in frustration, burying her face in the blanket. Her fists clenched, and she pounded the mattress a few times.

What on earth had she been thinking last night? How could she ever say something like that to Xie Hejing?

The phone kept buzzing beside her, the notification sound low and insistent. Nan Xu didn’t dare look at it—she was sure it was him again.

Still caught up in her spiraling thoughts, she suddenly heard the door open.

“Xuxu, why aren’t you up yet? Weren’t we going to the resort today?”

Qi Zhiyu burst in, makeup brush in hand.

“It’s opening day, the road up the mountain’s already packed. We need to leave early! I heard the hot springs there are gorgeous.”

Nan Xu stayed buried under the blanket. Qi Zhiyu paused mid-step, frowning with concern.

“Xuxu, what’s wrong? Are you feeling sick?”

Nan Xu shifted slightly but kept her face hidden. “I’m fine.”

She just had a terrible feeling—like disaster was about to strike.

“Really fine?” Qi Zhiyu asked again, still not convinced.

Nan Xu didn’t want her to worry. She got out of bed and forced a smile “I’m fine, really. What could possibly be wrong? You’d better go put on your makeup.”

“Didn’t you say the resort owner is a handsome guy? You should make a good first impression,” Nan Xu said, pointing at the clock on the wall. “If you don’t start now, you’ll run out of time.”

Qi Zhiyu was reminded at once. She dashed out to grab her eyeliner, ready to go for a bold, sharp look.

“I’ll be done in about half an hour. You should get ready too, Xuxu.”

“Okay.”

Nan Xu sat on the bed, steadying her breathing. It took her a few minutes to finally calm down.

She opened her chat with Xie Hejing but didn’t dare look at what he’d sent. Instead, she directly recorded a voice message:

[Brother, Zhiyu and I are heading to the resort. You… should get some rest.]

As soon as she sent it, she tossed her phone aside and didn’t look again.

Qi Zhiyu got ready much faster than expected—barely ten minutes later, she was done.

She wore a black leather jacket over a short skirt, paired with knee-high boots. With her long legs and tall figure, she exuded confidence with every step.

But when she walked in and saw Nan Xu’s outfit, she almost fainted.

“Xuxu, what are you wearing?”

“Aren’t we going to a resort?” Nan Xu looked quite pleased with her tracksuit—it was comfortable, after all.

Qi Zhiyu groaned. “Yes, a resort, not a hiking trail! There’s going to be a party, and you plan to show up in sportswear?”

“Oh right, we’ll be staying there for a few days. Your suitcase is still here—bring it along later.”

Before Nan Xu could respond, Qi Zhiyu swept in like a whirlwind, sat her down, and started picking out clothes for her.

All the clothes were Qi Zhiyu’s, so the style was totally different from what Nan Xu usually wore.

She dressed her in a wine-red, waist-fitted dress that highlighted her slim figure. The asymmetrical hem swayed with her movements, revealing glimpses of her long, fair legs.

Seeing how stunning she looked, Qi Zhiyu let out a whistle of approval, then picked up a coat and draped it over her shoulders. With a quick tie of the belt, she declared, “Perfect.”

She even took charge of Nan Xu’s makeup—ditching the soft, natural look she used to wear. This time, her makeup was bolder: sharp, upward eyeliner and a subtle shimmer at the corners of her eyes that made her gaze look irresistibly alluring.

Nan Xu stared at the mirror, uncertain. “Is… this okay?”

Qi Zhiyu rested a hand on her shoulder. “Of course it is. You look amazing.”

“When you go out, you have to look your best.”

“Come on, let’s go—if we don’t hurry, we’ll miss the party the resort owner’s throwing tonight. I heard quite a few people are coming.”

Qi Zhiyu drove Nan Xu toward the mountain resort, but the two still left a bit late — and ended up stuck halfway up the mountain.

Looking at the long line of cars ahead, Qi Zhiyu couldn’t help but sigh. “Wow, the owner sure has a lot of friends. Are all these people coming for tonight’s party?”

Nan Xu glanced ahead too. The rows of taillights blinked densely, and she couldn’t help asking, “Yuyu, how do you know the owner?”

“We worked on a project together before,” Qi Zhiyu said, her tone light. “He’s really handsome, and honestly, quite considerate — not the difficult type.”

She looked ahead again. “With this many people, I wonder if we’ll even get to see him tonight.”

“Not that it matters if we don’t,” she added cheerfully. “The resort’s closed to outsiders tonight, everything’s free. We can just relax and enjoy ourselves.”

While the two chatted, someone appeared ahead, walking along the road with a flashlight, seemingly checking license plates.

“What’s going on? They’re restricting cars now?” Qi Zhiyu muttered.

Nan Xu looked just as puzzled.

Soon, the man reached their car. He shone his flashlight across the plate, then suddenly broke into a wide grin. He hurried over and knocked on their window.

Qi Zhiyu rolled it down just a crack, cautious. “Yes? Can I help you?”

The man smiled politely. “You must be Miss Qi Zhiyu, right? Mr. Cheng just told us that if we see your car, we should let you through immediately. No need to wait in line.”

“You mean there’s a shortcut?” Qi Zhiyu blinked in surprise.

The man nodded, glancing around. “Yes, just follow that red car up ahead, please.”

Of course, Qi Zhiyu wasn’t about to pass up the chance to skip the jam. “Got it,” she said at once.

They switched to a narrower side road. Though the path was smaller, there were only a few cars on it — clearly, they were being given special treatment.

The drive up was smooth and quick.

Nan Xu cracked open the window, letting in the evening breeze. She smiled. “Yuyu, looks like this Mr. Cheng is really looking out for you.”

Qi Zhiyu looked a little puzzled herself, then joked, “Maybe he’s into me? Haha, well, with a face like his, I might just consider it.”

Meanwhile, inside the resort villa, Cheng Keyi stood by the window, watching the stream of guests arriving below. He grinned at Xie Hejing beside him. “See? I told you it was a great idea for us to co-invest in this place. Look how many people showed up! Give it a little time, and this resort’s gonna be booming.”

“When business takes off, my family won’t be able to say I can’t achieve anything.”

Xie Hejing didn’t respond. He was looking at something on his phone, his expression unreadable.

Cheng Keyi frowned. “Hey, I’m sharing my grand vision here. You could at least react a little. And what’s up with Xiang Weishi? I’ve tried inviting him a few times, and he keeps saying he’s busy.”

“I don’t know,” Xie Hejing said flatly.

“You—”

Just then, Cheng Keyi’s phone buzzed. He glanced down at a message from his staff, then said, “Alright, the guests you told me to bring up have arrived. You’re not gonna go take a look?”

He raised an eyebrow, teasingly. “I heard it’s two girls in that car. So which one has caught your eye, hmm?”

At that, Xie Hejing pocketed his phone and tilted his head slightly. “Let’s go.”

The car carrying Nan Xu and Qi Zhiyu didn’t stop at the parking lot. Instead, it followed the red car all the way to a side clearing near the resort.

When they stepped out, Nan Xu finally saw the man Qi Zhiyu had mentioned—Cheng Keyi himself.

He looked about their age—easygoing, with a soft, refined face and an approachable smile. His temperament seemed gentle too.

Qi Zhiyu and Cheng Keyi hit it off right away, chatting easily. Nan Xu stood beside them, greeting him politely before tactfully stepping back to give them space to talk.

While Cheng Keyi kept the conversation going with Qi Zhiyu, his gaze subtly shifted between the two women, curious to see which one was the girl who had caught Xie Hejing’s attention.

But… why hadn’t Xie Hejing shown up yet?

A few seconds later, the sound of footsteps approached from behind.

Nan Xu turned instinctively—and froze when she saw who it was.

Xie Hejing came toward them, dressed in a long black cashmere coat. The hem of it swayed slightly with his steps. His gaze was cool and distant as it swept over the small group.

When he noticed Nan Xu’s sudden change of expression, the corners of his lips lifted faintly. “Good evening, ladies.”

His tone was polite, but his eyes flickered briefly toward Nan Xu.

He took in her appearance—so different from her usual look—and thought of the words she’d said to him last night. The faint chill in his eyes deepened.

The others didn’t notice, but Nan Xu did. She could feel the air between them tighten, her fingers unconsciously tightening around the small bag in her hand.

Cheng Keyi stepped in with introductions. “This is my business partner, Xie Hejing.”

It had been years since Qi Zhiyu had last seen him, and her memory of him was vague. She didn’t recognize him at all—just smiled warmly and said hello.

Xie Hejing gave a curt nod.

Nan Xu’s heart was pounding, but she kept her tone calm. “Good evening, Mr. Xie.”

His gaze lingered on her face. The subtle hint of mystery and allure in her expression made his own darken further. His reply was low and cold. “Mm.”

Cheng Keyi glanced between them, puzzled. Why did Hejing’s tone sound so much colder than when he’d greeted them earlier?

His eyes flicked toward Nan Xu. Maybe she wasn’t the one after all?

He looked back at Qi Zhiyu, recalling Xie Hejing’s brief glance earlier, and silently concluded—ah, it must be her.

His expression brightened. “Miss Qi, what would you like to do tonight? We’d be happy to keep you company.”

Then he turned to Nan Xu as well. “You too, Miss.”

Qi Zhiyu blinked, momentarily confused. Wait… is Cheng Keyi actually interested in me?

Even though Nan Xu stood a short distance from Xie Hejing, she could still feel the chill radiating from him. She dared not linger and quickly declined, “No need, thank you.”

Cheng Keyi lowered his gaze, and the speed of her refusal only confirmed his assumption—so it wasn’t her.

Qi Zhiyu, meanwhile, preferred spending time alone with Nan Xu anyway. It would be more relaxing that way.

“Mr. Cheng, Mr. Xie, we really appreciate it, but since it’s our first time here, we’ll just explore on our own and not take up your time.”

Nan Xu added, “Yes, thank you both for your kindness.”

She offered a polite smile to Cheng Keyi, who seemed the friendlier of the two.

Cheng Keyi noticed that Xie Hejing neither spoke nor stopped them, and figured—well, if his friend wasn’t in a hurry to make a move, there was no need for him to press either.

“Alright then, enjoy yourselves.”

But Xie Hejing’s jaw tightened at the sight of Nan Xu smiling at Cheng Keyi. His expression grew colder, his voice clipped.

“Have a pleasant evening, both of you.”

On the way back, Cheng Keyi glanced at the silent man beside him, assuming he was sulking about being turned down earlier. He tried to lighten the mood with a casual pat on the shoulder. “Hey, don’t take it to heart. Plenty of other chances tonight.”

“Oh, come on,” Cheng Keyi teased with a grin. “Chasing someone always takes effort, just keep at it. But honestly, I don’t think she’s that into you. You’d better prepare yourself.”

He chuckled again, remembering how just now, Qi Zhiyu had only glanced at Xie Hejing two or three times, while the other girl barely looked at him at all—just one quick glance when he arrived, and not a single extra look after that.

Cheng Keyi couldn’t help laughing. Who would’ve thought that even Xie Hejing’s face could fail him one day?

Xie Hejing stopped walking and shot him a cold look. “You seem to know a lot about that, huh?”

Then he turned and strode off, irritation evident in every step.

“Where are you going?” Cheng Keyi called after him.

“The surveillance room,” Xie Hejing said curtly.

. . . . .

The party was already in full swing. The main hall buzzed with conversation and laughter as people drank and mingled. The atmosphere was lively and warm.

Nan Xu and Qi Zhiyu decided to hang around for a bit to enjoy it before heading off to the hot springs later.

Nan Xu was nibbling on a small piece of cake when she glanced at her phone. Xie Hejing had sent her quite a few messages.

She didn’t open them—just saw the preview of the most recent one:

[Nan Xu, looks like we’ll have to talk face-to-face tonight.]

Her fingers trembled slightly.

Qi Zhiyu noticed and leaned closer. “What’s wrong? Are you cold?”

Nan Xu shook her head. The coat she wore was thick and warm; she wasn’t cold at all. But that single message from Xie Hejing felt like plunging into icy water.

Seeing she was fine, Qi Zhiyu took a sip of her drink, then grinned mischievously and whispered into Nan Xu’s ear, “I just spotted a handsome guy.”

The teasing tone successfully lightened the mood. Nan Xu forced herself not to think about the message and played along.

“Where?”

“There, there,” Qi Zhiyu said, not daring to point directly. She gestured vaguely with her straw instead. “The one in gray.”

Nan Xu squinted. “Where exactly? I don’t see him.”

Qi Zhiyu tilted her straw again. “Right there—the one with curly hair and really fair skin.”

Nan Xu followed her gaze, and as if sensing it, the man looked over at that very moment.

Qi Zhiyu, realizing she might be caught staring, immediately turned away in a panic.

Nan Xu, still trying to figure out which one Qi Zhiyu meant, accidentally met the man’s eyes. Both paused for a moment. The man gave her a polite nod, and after a beat of surprise, Nan Xu returned the gesture with a faint nod of her own.

Up in the surveillance room, Xie Hejing watched the entire exchange through the monitor. His fury surged instantly, and the expensive golf club Cheng Keyi had just brought in met a violent end.

Downstairs, oblivious to the storm brewing above, Qi Zhiyu nudged Nan Xu with a grin. “Xuxu, do you think I should go ask for his WeChat?”

Nan Xu smiled faintly. “If you like him, go for it. Even if he says no, it’s no big deal.”

“But…” Qi Zhiyu hesitated.

Nan Xu asked, “What’s wrong?”

Qi Zhiyu gestured toward the woman sitting next to the handsome guy. “She’s from my company. Ugh, so annoying. I can’t believe I’m running into her even here.”

“Ever since I first saw that handsome guy, she’s been glued to him all night. If I go ask for his WeChat and he turns me down, she’s going to laugh herself silly.”

Qi Zhiyu sighed. “Sigh, finally found someone I actually like, too.”

Qi Zhiyu had always been picky—very few people ever caught her eye.

Nan Xu didn’t want her to miss her chance just like that. After glancing around to make sure Xie Hejing wasn’t around, she leaned over and said, “It’s fine. I can go for you. I’ll avoid your colleague and show him your photo—say that my friend wants his WeChat.”

“That way he’ll know who’s interested, and your colleague won’t see a thing.”

Qi Zhiyu’s eyes lit up at once. She hugged Nan Xu, and if it weren’t for the makeup on both their faces, she probably would’ve kissed her right then.

“You’re such an angel.”

Nan Xu smiled. “Then send me a photo you like—I’ll show him that one.”

“On it.” Qi Zhiyu immediately opened her phone and started scrolling through her thousands of photos to pick the right one.

About five minutes later, Nan Xu took Qi Zhiyu’s photo and went over to the handsome guy to explain.

He looked at the picture and agreed without hesitation.

Everything went smoothly.

Nan Xu then pulled up Qi Zhiyu’s QR code for him to scan.

His phone was tucked in his jacket pocket, so Nan Xu had to wait as he tugged at his coat to fish it out.

While waiting, she got a little bored, her gaze wandering around the party as she wondered what she and Qi Zhiyu might try next.

Then, suddenly—her eyes froze on a familiar figure.

Xie Hejing stood not far away, hands shoved in his pockets, chest rising and falling with each breath. His lips were curved slightly upward, yet his eyes held not a trace of warmth—cold enough to send chills through her.

Just then, her phone buzzed again. Nan Xu glanced down.

A new message lit up the screen:

[Caught you.]
