For some reason, Shang Lu suddenly felt like being a bit capricious.

She opened the door and walked out, stepping on her fluffy slippers in front of everyone, and threw herself into Chi Yan’s arms, her hands encircling his waist.

No one else expected this to happen, and Chi Yan was equally stunned, but his body naturally reacted faster than his brain. He held her with one hand and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Shang Lu suddenly started acting, burying her face in Chi Yan’s chest and pretending to choke up, “You’re finally back. These people are so scary. They’ve been knocking on the door and saying they want to take me away. I’m so scared, wuwuwu…”

“What are you afraid of?” Chen Yan’s hand landed lightly on her shoulder as he patted her twice. He lazily glanced at the others and said, “Do you want them to lose a hand or a foot?”

Shang Lu : “……?”

Wasn’t she performing in a melodramatic romance drama? How did Chi Yan’s words turn it into a thriller film in an instant? His acting desire was not weaker than hers!

Suddenly, the plot of <Evil> popped into Shang Lu’s mind, and she replied before her mouth could catch up, “Cut off the descendants’ roots?”

Chi Yan’s hand on her shoulder paused slightly, as if he was trying to hold back a laugh, and he said, “That’s quite ruthless, but it’s also an option.”

The others exchanged glances, not sure if this was a ‘joke’ or a serious statement. After all, they didn’t understand the thoughts of wealthy people; they just followed orders from above.

“Enough,” Chi Yan said, looking at those people. “You’ve all seen it. We live together now. If he wants to take her away, he can come directly to me. If he doesn’t find chatting with the younger generation interesting, my parents will be happy to see him too.”

With Chi Yan’s words, these people naturally didn’t dare to offend either side and quickly left.

Only then did Shang Lu release her hand from around Chen Yan’s waist, took a step back, and lowered her gaze without looking at him.

Chen Yan looked at her fair shoulder exposed to the cold weather and asked, “Why didn’t you wear something warmer when you came out on such a cold day?”

Shang Lu replied with her head down, “The living room has the air conditioning on.”

Chi Yan said, “Then why don’t you go inside now?”

“Okay,” Shang Lu responded with a smile and then walked back into her own house.

Chi Yan followed her inside, put down the food, and brought both dogs from next door.

Xiao Guai went to the dog food bowl Shang Lu had prepared and started eating eagerly, while Da Guai wagged its tail and approached Shang Lu.

Shang Lu patted its head and couldn’t help but look at Chi Yan. She asked, “Chi Yan, don’t you have any questions for me?”

While washing vegetables, Chi Yan asked, “What should I ask?”

Shang Lu hugged Da Guai, rested her chin on its fluffy head, and looked at Chen Yan’s back. She said with some discontent, “Chi Yan, can’t you be a bit more serious? Aren’t you curious at all?”

Chi Yan turned off the water, wiped his hands with a towel from the side, and turned to look at Shang Lu. He asked, “So why did you do what you did?”

They locked eyes.

Shang Lu buried her head in the dog’s fur again and said, “Forget it, turn around first.”

She seemed unable to meet Chi Yan’s eyes, or else she couldn’t say certain things.

Chi Yan cooperated as well, turning around and placing his hands on the table without saying a word.

Shang Lu rubbed the head of Da Guai again and then answered softly, “Because I wanted to use you, wanted to involve you, wanted to make him misunderstand our relationship, so he would be even more afraid to do anything to me.”

Chi Yan chuckled lightly, saying, “I see.”

Shang Lu asked him, “Aren’t you angry?”

“I’m quite happy,” Chi Yan replied in the same lazy tone, saying, “But Young Lady, you don’t have to paint yourself in such a bad light. These things can be phrased differently.”

Shang Lu asked in confusion, “What do you mean?”

Chi Yan’s voice became slightly hoarse, but carried a hint of inexplicable amusement, as if he were a teacher explaining the correct answer to a student, “Because you hope I’ll fully stand by your side, hope I become your ally.”

The sound of water in the kitchen was turned on deliberately, as if she didn’t need to respond to this topic.

Shang Lu blinked as she processed the information in Chi Yan’s words.

Her somewhat devious thoughts were directly exposed.

Could she deny it? She couldn’t.

Although the idea of ‘my friend cannot be friends with someone I dislike’ was childish, when Chi Yan first said that he and Jiang Yi weren’t really friends, she distinctly remembered feeling relieved.

Almost as if by accident, Shang Lu couldn’t help but ask, “So, will you?”

“Of course,” there was no hesitation in the answer, and after a brief pause, he added, “I belong to you.”

Shang Lu was slightly stunned.

Just as Chi Yan had said.

She hoped he would fully stand by her side, hoped he would become her ally, so did she also hope… that he belonged to her?

The last point left Shang Lu somewhat puzzled.

What did this ‘belong to’ really mean?

The meaning of this sentence seemed different from the first two, yet it also felt like a casual word of comfort, making it difficult for her to make a judgment at the moment.

In truth, there was another small voice in her heart suggesting a different answer, but she didn’t dare to think too much, fearing that she was letting her imagination run wild.

Anyway, at the moment, she didn’t dislike this sentence or the feeling that came with it.

Just when Shang Lu was in a daze, she saw that Xiao Guai had somehow finished all the dog food in the bowl and was laboriously climbing onto the couch, extending its front paws to jump onto the coffee table.

Then—

Shang Lu saw that she had applied light makeup on a whim before leaving for her audition today, and all the unorganized cosmetics were scattered on the floor.

And it wasn’t just a normal scattering; Xiao Guai had deliberately pushed them off the table bit by bit with its paws.

Shang Lu : “?!”

Shang Lu shouted, “Chi Yan! Come out and see what your son has done! My powder and blush are all smashed; you have to buy me new ones! The son’s debts must be paid by the father!”

“Alright, alright, I’ll buy you new ones, a full set,” Chi Yan replied nonchalantly, carrying a plate of stir-fry as he came out. “Just bear with it; you don’t really want to punish it.”

Shang Lu didn’t argue and held onto Xiao Guai, patting its head a few times and giving it some education, but looking at its pitiful, whimpering appearance, she soon softened.

After scolding it, she still held it in her arms. “Alright, alright, you’re not allowed to do this again in the future.”

However, as soon as Shang Lu let go, she saw that this time, Xiao Guai wasn’t causing trouble with her makeup; instead, it reached out a hand towards her water cup.

Shang Lu: “…?”

She couldn’t understand at all; what was this behavior about?

So Shang Lu could only look at Chi Yan, expressing her confusion with her eyes.

Chi Yan’s expression also became more complicated, saying, “Wenren Yan recently adopted a cat. A few days ago, I had Xiao Guai and their cat take pet photos together. It seems that old saying is true, ‘Good habits are hard to learn, but bad habits are quickly picked up.'”

Regardless, the fact that a dog learned a cat’s habits in just two days made Chi Yan decide not to let his dog and Wenren Yan’s cat, which had very ‘grabby’ paws, interact again.

That night, Shang Lu sat at the end of the bed, blow-drying her hair. After a while, she turned off the hairdryer with a look of disdain.

Soon, she received a message from Chi Yan, who had finished walking the dog and returned home.

[ The guest room is ready. Do you want to come over early? Stay with me for these few days. After all, we don’t know if the people from the Shang family will come again. ]

Shang Lu hesitated for a moment, thinking it made sense.

If the people from the Shang family came again, even if they just knocked on her door like today, it would disrupt her script reading.

So, Shang Lu brought two sets of clean clothes and her usual skincare products, then knocked on the Chi Yan’s door. She bowed solemnly and said, “I’m counting on you now, I’m here to mooch a meal and a place to stay.”

Chi Yan took a step back to let her in.

  1. Babe you are way too slow to catch up. You have a whole family, a kid, 2 dogs and a man and still think you don’t know what familial love is? 😂🤚 & I need Chi Yan to be way more obvious. This pace is not pacing enough for me

    1. Seems to me like it’s self denial, afraid that she would lose him if she decided to go further

      1. It seems a slightly different to me. The one who’s afraid was CY. He’s afraid he’d lose her if he come on her too obviously. So, he just occasionally put in some hints sporadically.
