Wen Le of Rebirth in the End Times (BL) – Chapter 55 Chaos

In the darkness, Wen Le leaned against the wall quietly, while Xiao Wen and Han Ya were discussing something in the other room, which he had no intention of participating in. Most of the others were guarding the four unconscious people.

Thick canvas blocked the moonlight outside the window, and the bewitching moonlight was tempting. Wen Le didn’t know how many people outside the rescue station were immersed in this nightmare-like lure.

The chaos that could be faintly heard at the beginning of the night had long since subsided, and the inexplicable silence suppressed everyone’s hearts.

Wen Le closed his eyes. The initial panic had been suppressed, and the deepening oppression over the past period of time had reached its climax tonight but disappeared without a trace just before it was about to erupt.

When faced with reality and had to face it, he finally picked up the calmness and determination he had when he was reborn.

He silently chuckled, realizing that in just over three months, he had slowly eroded the struggle and resilience that had lasted for more than a year. The ease and comfort of the past three months had made him forget the true cruelty of the apocalypse.

With his fists clenched tightly, the pain of his fingernails digging into his flesh reminded him of how could he forget the pain he once experienced, why he was still panicking after going through so much.

Did he forget? The endless pain of remorse.

Did he forget? The firm belief he had when he was reborn.

Where did his past indifference and cruelty go? Was he just allowing himself to be weak because of the protection of Xiao Wen?

Bang!

Bang! Bang!

Wen Le opened his eyes and as the gunshots inside the building grew louder, he could faintly hear the chaotic noise from outside the window.

Without hesitation, he turned and strode towards the direction of the stairs. The blood-red moonlight outside the building would not harm those with abilities. Without the threat of mutations, there was nothing to stop him from retrieving the strength he had gradually learned in the cruelty when he was alone.

On his way to the warehouse, he forced himself to forget about the presence of Xiao Wen and the sense of dependence that had been slowly recovering during this period of time. He had died once and had no reason to rely on them, who had no experience. There was no reason to let them support the hardships of their future.

The chaos and screams grew louder as he approached, and his faithful companion appeared in his hand.

The door to the warehouse was wide open, and panicked survivors continued to pour out.

“Go back! You’ll die if you’re exposed to the moonlight!” yelled Wen Le, but it didn’t stop the people who kept running out.

Unable to take the time to gather these people, Wen Le could only push his way against the crowd towards the warehouse. Only after dealing with the threat inside the warehouse, would these people dare to come back.

“Save… save me!” Finally breaking through the crowd and entering the warehouse, Wēn Le was suddenly pulled by the leg. Lowering his head and using the moonlight outside the door, he saw a thin and weak little girl pleading with him. Wēn Le took out a charged light bulb and when the light shone down, a trace of pity flashed in his eyes. The next second, however, he shot a bullet into the girl’s head at his feet.

The torn flesh and blood that had been torn apart was enough to tell him the fate that the girl was about to face, so he might as well give her a quick death.

Before the force on his pant leg disappeared, Wen Le raised his gun and began shooting.

The zombification had just started. Seven hours had passed since the first wave of comatose people, and during these seven hours, enough time had passed for the second wave of comatose people to turn into zombies. Unlike at the beginning of the apocalypse, where people only began to zombify two days after falling into a coma, this time the two were very close.

The warehouse was large, and many people were arranged to stay inside. In the moonlight, Wen Le couldn’t see how many people had run out, but now, under the lights, there were more than a hundred slow-moving figures. Wen Le was highly focused, constantly shooting and constantly changing the gun that was loaded with bullets in his memory space. He didn’t have time to stop because there were still dozens of people lying here. He didn’t know whether these people were going to turn into zombies after fainting later or whether they had awakened their abilities after fainting initially. He didn’t dare to gamble. Perhaps if he was slow by a step, there would be people who were still awakening that would be eaten by zombies.

In just a few minutes, Wen Le had taken care of all the visible zombies. He quickly ran past each person lying on the ground. Anyone who had been bitten by a zombie, he mercilessly blew their brains open with a gunshot.

Gunfire also came from the nearby warehouse. The military should have reacted and resolved the internal zombification, and they had come to stabilize the situation.

“Wen Sir.”

Wen Le turned his head and looked at the soldier who had run up to him. He recognized the soldier’s familiar dark and resolute face.

“Wen Sir, I’m from the 108th Regiment.” The soldier saluted Wen Le.

108…It was Bai Yang’s regiment.

“Pay attention to these people. They may faint at different times, and there are survivors outside who are still conscious. Anyone who faints from now on should be shot on the spot.” Wen Le put down his gun and turned to leave when he saw someone taking over the warehouse.

“Shoot them? What if…” The soldier hesitated when he heard Wen Le’s words.

“Shoot them! Except for the people who fainted at the beginning and showed abilities, everyone else will turn into zombies.” Wen Le ignored the soldier’s reaction and left the warehouse after speaking.

Listening to him could reduce some casualties, but it didn’t matter if they didn’t listen. This wasn’t his territory, and the decisions from above had nothing to do with him. He had already given the reminder, and what the soldiers did was up to them.

Wen Le could see the soldiers’ figures in the three warehouses in his row. He bypassed the crowd and ran to the warehouse at the back. He could vaguely see several soldiers rushing into the leftmost warehouse.

It seemed that not many troops had reacted yet. Hopefully, it wasn’t just Bai Yang’s team that had stabilized.

Wen Le was about to rush into the middle warehouse when he saw a familiar figure.

Jin Zi!

That head of golden hair was shimmering under the moonlight, catching Wen Le’s attention at first glance. He immediately thought of Lin Yan and the others living here.

Midway through his run, he abruptly changed direction and headed towards the right.

As long as Lin Yan and the others were here, there shouldn’t be any major problems.

After entering the second row of warehouses on the right, Wen Le began to clear out the area once again.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

One shot after another, the Desert Eagle had strong recoil. After continuous shooting, Wen Le’s right shoulder had gone from sore to numb.

Wen Le kept walking, picking a direction and calculating the speed and angle of the zombies. Sometimes he let the zombies approach him from another direction, waiting until they were about to grab him before swiftly shooting them.

The black liquid and the splattering red blood from the zombies and the wounded people whom he had shot were dotted all over Wen Le’s clothes. He paid no attention to the foul smell and continued calmly.

Facing the zombies in this one-sided slaughter, Wen Le slowly regained the feeling he had once lost, the feeling of confronting life and death.

“Wen Le?”

Without turning around, a surprised voice came from behind, and a zombie on Warmth’s right was instantly engulfed in flames.

Lin Yan walked a few steps to Wen Le’s side and they split up to clear out these monsters in two different directions.

Lin Yan didn’t expect Wen Le to be here. Based on his understanding, he wouldn’t even be surprised if Xiao Wen appeared here. Wen Le was someone who only wanted to guard a small piece of land. Lin Yan could see it clearly from their previous encounters. But why was Wen Le here while Xiao Wen was not?

All the active zombies were eliminated by the two of them, and they searched through the unconscious people on the ground, trying to distinguish those who were about to become ability users from those who were about to turn into zombies. However, even with his psychic power, Wen Le couldn’t tell the difference and had to leave them to continue their unconsciousness. As for those who were bitten by zombies during the chaos, their heads were smashed regardless of whether they were dead or alive.

Lin Yan didn’t intervene with these people. His flames couldn’t kill them instantly, and he couldn’t bear to use his power to burn these people alive who hadn’t been completely taken over by the virus in their wounds yet. Their fate was already tragic enough. Lin Yan had no way or right to make them suffer the pain of flames before they died.

Wen Le didn’t rebuke Lin Yan for being too compassionate. Instead, he handed him a knife. With a swift stroke, they could save time and reduce the pain of those people.

After roughly clearing the warehouse, Wen Le and Lin Yan left together, and the rest of the troops had already arrived. They could handle the follow-up work.

“Do you want to talk?” Lin Yan suddenly said.

Wen Le silently holstered his handgun into his waistband holster.

“Don’t you want to check on your losses?” After walking for a while longer, he asked the still-walking Lin Yan.

They had long passed the warehouse where Lin Yan and his people were staying.

Lin Yan took a step and a half to block in front of Wen Le.

“I’m a psychologist,” he said.

“I know,” Wen Le replied.

“I’m also a psychotherapist.”

Wen Le raised an eyebrow.

“So I can’t stand it when people are carrying emotional baggage.”

After three months, Wen Le’s face returned to its cold and sarcastic expression. He looked at Lin Yan coldly and said, “There are more people in the warehouse who need you to relieve their emotions.”

Lin Yan smiled, “But I don’t know them.”

Wen Le remained silent and walked past him, heading in a direction that wasn’t towards their dormitory where they lived.

Lin Yan didn’t speak again along the way, and the two walked in silence, one in front of the other, until Wen Le stopped in his tracks. It was then that Lin Yan realized they had arrived at the entrance of a relief station.

Ignoring the person next to him, Wen Le lifted his foot and walked along the towering wall until he reached the top.

Lin Yan’s eyes widened in disbelief.

What kind of ability was this?!!

“Didn’t you want me to enlighten you?” Wen Le sat on the wall and looked out over the land outside the relief station, suddenly speaking up.

Looking up at Wen Le high up on the wall, Lin Yan was at a loss.

How was he supposed to get up there?!!

Wen Le didn’t look at him and his right hand moved slightly.

A rope was lowered in front of Lin Yan.

Lin Yan was speechless. Who carries a rope with them all the time? But he still climbed up along the rope.

“Why do people lose their willpower in comfortable environments?”

Lin Yan heard the question from Wen Le and followed his gaze to the vast open space outside the wall.

“This is human nature. It’s difficult to remain resolute in a difficult path when you’re in a comfortable environment. Who doesn’t want a comfortable life and enjoy every day in ease?”

“Human nature…” Wen Le murmured, “Why is it so easy to forget the pain we once suffered…”

“Perhaps it’s not forgetting, but rather unwillingness to recall. Since it’s painful, recalling it will only continue to cause pain. In everyone’s heart, their subconscious mind will ignore things that will cause them pain, especially when there is comfort as a comparison.”

“However, in comfort, one can only die faster,” Lin Yan laughed. “The human mind is complex, and reason and emotion are always two different ways of thinking. What we know in our minds, we may not be able to do with our emotions. Just like all living creatures tend to seek benefits and avoid harm, they tend to go towards what benefits them and avoid what harms them.”

Hearing this, Wen Le furrowed his brows, “But having a strong will is what benefits oneself, while depending on others while indulging in comfort only harms oneself and others.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Yan began to vaguely sense the meaning behind Wen Le’s words.

“What you said is from a rational perspective, but what I’m referring to is the subconscious, which is more inclined towards emotions. Choosing a comfortable environment and relying on others will make life easier, while having a strong will can make one tired. Therefore, the tendency to seek benefits and avoid harm in terms of emotions is exactly opposite to rational thinking,” Lin Yan explained.

Wen Le rolled his eyes, “What a mess. I can’t believe you’re a psychologist, and yet you keep saying things that patients can’t understand.”

Lin Yan shrugged, “That’s just a theoretical explanation. If you could be more specific, I could help you analyze it.”

Wen Le glanced over and sneered, “Aren’t we still not that familiar with each other?!”

Lin Yan grinned, not as calm as when they first met.

“Let’s talk more and get to know each other better, then!”

Wen Le didn’t want to continue the conversation. The sky was already turning white, and the dark red moonlight was slowly fading away. Even though it had been three consecutive days of a red moon, it did not affect the bright sunshine during the day.

The wind was howling over the wall, and it was fortunate that both of them were supernatural beings, so they weren’t frozen stiff. They could still watch the sunrise of the end of the world with a good mood.
