Chapter 48 – Exclusive Sweet Romance: The Battle to Save the Campus Heartthrob (10)
Bai Mo instinctively reached for his backpack and, sure enough, felt something shaped like a phone inside. But his own phone was in his hand—so what was this phone-like object?
Meanwhile, in a spot where no one was paying attention, Huo Wen curled his lips into a sinister smile. The satisfaction of success flashed across his face for a brief moment before he quickly concealed it, replacing it with a concerned expression.
Turning back, he began comforting the girl who had lost her phone. “Don’t jump to conclusions just yet. What if you’re mistaken? It wouldn’t be good to wrongly accuse someone. Besides, judging by his appearance, he doesn’t seem like someone who couldn’t afford a phone…”
Huo Wen’s words seemed to be defending Bai Mo, but in reality, they were only adding fuel to the fire.
“If it wasn’t him, then why did he check his bag just now?” The girl exclaimed emotionally. Her missing phone had been a gift from her father before he passed away, making it incredibly precious to her.
To make matters worse, Bai Mo had accidentally bumped into her earlier, providing a perfect opportunity for him to supposedly steal her phone.
Her loud cries quickly attracted the attention of passersby. Bai Mo stood in the center of the commotion, unable to explain himself. Even if he insisted he was innocent, the girl was adamant that it was him and refused to believe otherwise.
“If you say it wasn’t you, then let us check your bag to prove your innocence,” Huo Wen took the opportunity to suggest.
Bai Mo clutched his bag tightly and shook his head. “Why should I? My backpack is my personal belonging. What right do you have to search it?”
Inside his bag was a watch he had bought for Jian Haocang, along with the unknown phone someone had planted there.
More importantly, he wasn’t a thief—why should he have to submit to a bag search? Whether or not the phone was found in his bag, just the suspicion alone would be enough to brand him as a thief.
Although a bag search was the fastest way to clear things up, Bai Mo refused outright. Encouraged by Huo Wen’s manipulative words, the girl became even more convinced that Bai Mo was hiding something.
The standoff continued, causing a traffic jam on the campus walkway. As people found themselves unable to pass through, some stopped to ask what was going on, and soon, another group of bystanders joined the growing crowd.
Although ferrets are social animals, that didn’t mean Bai Mo enjoyed being treated as a joke. In the short time the standoff lasted, Xiao Bobao had already pieced together the whole situation.
The phone in Bai Mo’s bag did indeed belong to the girl, but it had been planted there by someone under Huo Wen’s instructions. While Bai Mo had been distracted with his own phone, the accomplice had slipped the phone into his bag from behind the bench.
Bai Mo hadn’t forgotten the previous incident where he had been falsely accused of stealing a design USB. That was why, while Jian Haocang was in his meeting, he had deliberately kept his distance and waited outside. Yet, despite his caution, a new theft accusation had found its way to him.
He just couldn’t understand—was Huo Wen really willing to go this far for the female lead?
Was it even worth it?
At this point, it seemed like Huo Wen’s true love was the female lead herself. She had long stopped appearing in front of him, yet Huo Wen continued to scheme, frame, and manipulate others, each move more ruthless than the last.
These plot details weren’t explicitly written in the main storyline; they had to be triggered and uncovered by the host. Even Xiao Bobao found Huo Wen’s behavior unsettling—it was almost as if he had some personal vendetta against Bai Mo.
Then, suddenly, Xiao Bobao had a flash of insight—what if there really was a grudge?
In the original plot, there was a long passage detailing how Black Moonlight’s parents had amassed their fortune. If that information wasn’t important, it would have been glossed over in just a few sentences.
Could it be that Huo Wen was actually Bai Mo’s father’s illegitimate daughter?
If Bai Mo were completely ruined and forced to leave the country, the Bai family’s entire fortune would fall into her hands.
Xiao Bobao’s imagination was running wild, but given the extensive library of Black Moonlight novels in the system, she had seen countless plots just like this. It was just that none of her previous hosts had encountered such a scenario before. Or maybe they had but failed to uncover the hidden storyline, leaving them unaware.
“Xiao Bobao, can you help me move this phone somewhere else?” Bai Mo asked.
Judging by how things were going, there was a high chance his bag would be searched. He refused to admit to something he hadn’t done, but he also didn’t want to be framed into a confession. As long as the evidence wasn’t on him, Huo Wen’s scheme would fail.
“Of course! Today’s me is not the same as the me from the last world!” Xiao Bobao confidently pounded her chest. As long as her energy was sufficient, not only could she transfer objects—she could even teleport people.
After careful consideration, the duo decided to turn the tables and return the favor—by transferring the phone into Huo Wen’s bag.
Meanwhile, the onlookers began to recognize Bai Mo. One of them suddenly spoke up, “Could this be a misunderstanding? The campus heartthrob spoils his little wife endlessly—he gives her whatever she wants. Why would she need to steal a phone? If she asked, Jian Haocang would probably present it to her with both hands.”
Many students knew about Jian Haocang’s privileged background and his deep affection for Bai Mo.
He was constantly buying Bai Mo snacks and gifts, much to the envy and jealousy of onlookers. Besides, Bai Mo himself wasn’t lacking—when they first met him, his outfit alone had screamed wealth
Bai Mo smiled at the person who had spoken up for him and softly said, “Thank you for speaking up for me. Could I trouble you with one more favor?”
The person assumed Bai Mo wanted them to go fetch Jian Haocang, but to their surprise, Bai Mo instead asked them to find the school’s disciplinary director.
Who would be stupid enough to cause a scene in front of the disciplinary director if they were actually guilty?
With just one simple sentence, Bai Mo successfully swayed the bystanders who had initially sided with Huo Wen and the girl. Even the girl who had lost her phone began to hesitate. Had Bai Mo really taken her phone?
She turned to Huo Wen for reassurance, as it was Huo Wen who had told her that she had seen a pink phone with a small gourd charm inside Bai Mo’s bag—an exact match for the one she had lost.
“A clear conscience fears no shadow. I didn’t take your phone, but my backpack is my personal belonging. Inside, there’s a gift I prepared for Brother Haocang. With so many people here, if it gets damaged, I can replace the item, but I can’t replace my sincerity. If you want to involve the disciplinary director, school security, or even the police, that’s fine. But I will not allow a private bag search.”
Bai Mo’s reasoning was sound. If any of the onlookers were suddenly accused by a random person—”You stole my stuff! You’re a thief!”—and then pressured into letting someone search their bag, who would willingly agree?
His reaction was entirely logical and reasonable.
However, the male student Bai Mo had asked to fetch the disciplinary director didn’t return with them. Instead, he brought out the design instructor, followed by a group of students participating in the design competition.
The instructor walked over with a serious expression. The commotion outside had disrupted the meeting, and someone had even come to find Jian Haocang, saying that his significant other was being bullied.
That was exactly the kind of trouble she disliked—school was a place for studying, not for making a scene. What’s more, this incident involved one of her favorite students. Worried about the situation, she decided to come out and see for herself.
The crowd quickly made way for the instructor. Bai Mo obediently greeted her with a polite “Hello, teacher.” His outstanding appearance and well-mannered demeanor left a good impression on her.
Jian Haocang stepped forward, took Bai Mo’s hand, and gently asked what had happened. Bai Mo, calm and composed, explained the situation in just a few straightforward sentences—neither exaggerating nor downplaying the facts.
Jian Haocang’s heart ached for Bai Mo. Ever since Mo Mo started dating him, he had endured so much pressure.
Jian Haocang faced Huo Wen, his tone unfriendly. “Huo Wen, did you personally see Mo Mo holding this female student’s phone?”
Huo Wen was momentarily intimidated by Jian Haocang’s imposing presence. She was one of the few who knew the truth about his family background. She wasn’t capable of going up against Jian Corporation. As she hesitated over how to respond, Ran Yunyun, who had also come outside, spoke up on behalf of her best friend.
“Wenwen isn’t someone who would falsely accuse others. How could she say something without evidence?” While this statement carried an implication of blaming Bai Mo, she couldn’t just stand by and watch Huo Wen be bullied—even if the one doing the bullying was the person she liked.
“Yunyun…” Huo Wen looked at Ran Yunyun with emotion. At this critical moment, her best friend was still standing by her side. She hadn’t placed her trust in the wrong person.
The female student who lost her phone, growing increasingly anxious as time dragged on, turned to Huo Wen impatiently. “Didn’t you say you personally saw my phone in her bag?” Even after all this commotion—now with a teacher involved—there was still no resolution. She was afraid that the phone her father had given her as a final gift would be lost forever.
Bai Mo stepped forward, neither humble nor overbearing, and addressed the design instructor. “Teacher, I never took her phone. I’m willing to have my bag searched, but I also suspect that someone is making false accusations to cover up their own crime. When this female student’s phone went missing, both Huo Wen and I were present. If we’re going to conduct a search, then we should check both bags. That would be the fair approach.”
The young man shot Huo Wen a sharp glare, as if resenting her for framing him.
Huo Wen pursed her lips, but inwardly, she was gloating. This time, she was sure she had him trapped.
“I agree to a bag search. I didn’t take it, so I have nothing to hide. I’m not like some people, making excuses and hesitating—clearly guilty inside.”
Huo Wen was confident. After all, she had personally instructed someone to take the phone from the girl’s bag and had witnessed it being slipped into Bai Mo’s backpack.
The design instructor looked between them. “No one has the right to search another person’s belongings without consent. But since you both agree, then go ahead and open your bags.”
Bai Mo handed his bag to the instructor. “To avoid any accusations that I’m tampering with anything, may I ask the teacher to check my bag for me?”
The instructor made no comment but, after obtaining Bai Mo’s consent, began taking out the contents one by one and placing them on the bench: an umbrella, a water bottle, a notebook, and a rectangular box. Judging by its size and shape, it was more than capable of holding a phone.
Bai Mo smiled shyly, glanced at Jian Haocang, and said, “This is a gift I prepared for Brother Haocang. Inside is a watch.”
The female student who had lost her phone didn’t believe him. Did a watch really need such a big box? For all she knew, her phone could be inside.
Not only did the girl think this way, but Huo Wen had the same suspicion. The design instructor had nearly turned Bai Mo’s backpack inside out without finding a phone. The only possible explanation was that it was inside the box.
“May I open it?” the design instructor asked.
Bai Mo’s cheeks turned slightly red, and he nodded shyly.
The box slowly opened, revealing a custom-made watch with a crystal-clear dial. Under the sunlight, it shimmered beautifully.
Someone in the crowd recognized it as an internationally renowned luxury watch brand and couldn’t help but gasp. Before long, murmurs of amazement spread among the onlookers.
The instructor called out, “Silence.” Then, they turned their gaze to Huo Wen.
“Now it’s your turn.”
Huo Wen stared in shock at Bai Mo’s now-empty backpack. She wanted to accuse him of hiding the phone somewhere else, but since the person conducting the search was the design instructor, she didn’t dare question them.
As she reluctantly unzipped her own bag, she muttered under her breath, “Bai Mo is too cunning.”
But the moment she pulled the zipper open and saw the pink phone quietly sitting in her inner pocket, her face turned deathly pale.
