Chapter 166- The Wolf King’s Naughty Little Wife – Breaking the Rules (12)
The beastman quickly returned to the main group to report the news. As the saying goes, “Catch a thief with the stolen goods.” Even if it was one of their own, they couldn’t betray the Beast God’s messenger—especially after the messenger had done so much to help the Winged Wolf Tribe.
When the beastmen heard that Kyle had deceived the Beast God’s messenger and was secretly meeting another female, they were outraged. Full of righteous indignation, they marched boldly to the “scene of the crime.”
Sure enough, Kyle was there. But why was the female lying on the ground?
Brown, who had come along, asked, “Kyle, why are you here alone? Where’s Xiayue… and Bai Tang?”
Everyone knew Bai Tang had brought food and had gone for a walk with Kyle.
Suspicious glances shifted between Kyle and Ran Xiayue. Just as the little squirrel was about to rush out, a large hand held him back, stopping him.
Bai Tang opened his mouth and bit down, but Kyle remained unmoved. In the end, the little squirrel couldn’t bear to actually hurt Kyle and could only grind his teeth in frustration, letting out a dissatisfied grunt.
Ran Xiayue quickly spoke up, “It’s my fault. I was digging up some radishes in the forest, but they were too heavy for me to carry back. Kyle helped me bring them home. Just now, I accidentally lost my footing…”
She kept insisting that they shouldn’t blame Kyle, saying she had just happened to run into him. But the way she looked at Kyle—with a mixture of pity and pleading, weakness and hope—made it obvious to anyone that something wasn’t right.
Kyle said nothing, but the other beastmen seemed to suddenly understand and fully accepted Ran Xiayue’s explanation.
“Oh, so that’s what happened. Kyle, why didn’t you say so earlier? I almost misunderstood you,” said the beastman who had run back to “spread the news,” scratching his head in embarrassment.
Ran Xiayue clenched her teeth secretly. What was going on? Shouldn’t they have helped her up with concern and assumed she had something going on with Kyle?
She never expected that the beastmen—who had never lied nor been lied to—would so straightforwardly believe her story.
“I’ll help you carry it back,” Brown offered, taking the heavy basket from Ran Xiayue.
Although he didn’t like her, they lived in the same tribe, and she was a female. If Kyle helped her, it could easily lead to misunderstandings—just like what happened just now. If Bai Tang saw it, he’d definitely get angry. No beastman could accept their partner showing kindness to another female. Although Kyle and Bai Tang weren’t officially mated yet, in everyone’s eyes, they were as good as promised to each other.
Ran Xiayue put on a grateful expression and sincerely thanked Kyle, then followed Brown back to the tribe.
Since the matter was settled, the beastmen returned to work. They were determined to finish building all the houses within five days. The Beast God’s messenger had said that once the houses were done, they would build heated brick beds. Word had it these were magical tools for staying warm in winter. This year, no female or young one would freeze to death—everyone was looking forward to it.
Kyle lagged behind a few steps. Once the others had walked away, the little squirrel jumped out from his arms and transformed back into human form.
“Do you understand what it means for males and females to keep their distance? If you don’t, I’ll teach you myself! You—keep your distance from me!” The adorable sub-beastman jabbed the beastman in the chest, speaking each word with emphasis.
Bai Tang knew he was being unreasonable about the whole situation. It was clearly the female lead who had ulterior motives, but he just couldn’t help feeling angry—Kyle actually didn’t know how to say no!
Kyle, however, wasn’t paying attention to Bai Tang’s words at all. Even though he knew he shouldn’t, he couldn’t stop glancing at Bai Tang.
Bai Tang’s skin was pale with a healthy pink hue, and his big fluffy tail swayed back and forth, completely capturing Kyle’s attention. He looked absolutely adorable—he must feel amazing to the touch.
That’s exactly what Kyle was thinking—and exactly what he did.
As if possessed, he reached out and gently touched Bai Tang’s soft back, grabbing hold of that big fluffy tail.
“Ah~ W-What are you doing?”
Bai Tang was caught off guard when Kyle touched his sensitive spot. His body went weak, and he nearly collapsed, only able to stay upright by leaning against Kyle.
The sub-beastman’s cheeks flushed a deep red, his soft pink lips slightly pouting. Kyle recalled that sweet kiss from before, and now with the warm little body in his arms, a tightness stirred in his lower abdomen as he reacted instinctively.
“Are you cold, Tang Tang? Put on the beast hide first.” Kyle’s voice was hoarse as he took off the beast hide draped around his upper body and wrapped it around Bai Tang.
The sub-beastman was petite, and the beast hide reached down to his thighs. It wasn’t particularly long, but it covered all the important parts.
Many sub-beastmen and females dressed like this during the hotter months, so Bai Tang’s attire didn’t seem out of place.
“You—you, keep your distance!” Bai Tang tried to push Kyle away, but he couldn’t budge him.
“Tang Tang, I—Kyle—swear to the Beast God, I will love only you. If I break this vow, may I be cast into eternal damnation…”
“Okay, okay! Stop! You’re not allowed to say things like that!”
Bai Tang quickly covered Kyle’s mouth. That kind of curse was way too harsh—what if he failed his mission in the future, and Kyle ended up with the female lead instead?
Bai Tang could bind to a system and complete missions, and his best friend was a literal fox spirit. He truly believed that ghosts and gods might exist.
“Th-Then from now on, you’re not allowed to talk to Ran Xiayue. You’re not allowed to do anything for her.”
The sub-beastman said in a soft, childish voice.
“Alright. From now on, I’ll only listen to Tang Tang. Whatever Tang Tang tells me to do, I’ll do it.” Kyle rested his forehead gently against Bai Tang’s, his coffee-colored eyes reflecting only the image of the little sub-beastman.
They lingered in that tender moment for a while, until Bai Tang told Kyle to go help the other beastmen with the construction work. The sooner the houses were built, the better for everyone. He said he could walk back on his own.
But Kyle couldn’t relax and insisted on walking Bai Tang to the entrance of the tribe. He only turned to head back into the forest after watching him carry his fruit milk into the tribe.
As Bai Tang walked into the tribe, everyone he passed greeted him warmly, and he responded with a smile each time.
Just as he was nearing Priest Mana’s house, someone suddenly jumped out from the side and blocked his path.
Ran Xiayue wore a sweet smile as she held out a large radish to Bai Tang.
“Um… about this afternoon in the forest—thanks to Kyle. I was afraid you’d misunderstand, so I came over specifically to explain. There’s really nothing going on between me and Kyle…”
If Bai Tang had truly known nothing about the situation, he might have actually misunderstood Kyle. Ran Xiayue spoke vaguely about what happened that afternoon, claiming it had nothing to do with Kyle, but her words carried an undertone of “Kyle and I are close“, subtly suggestive and ambiguous. At first, those nearby were confused, but soon after, their eyes turned toward Bai Tang with pity.
Poor little sub-beastman—his soon-to-be partner had fallen for someone else.
As more and more people paused their work to listen in on her conversation with Bai Tang, Ran Xiayue felt secretly pleased. Let the rumors spread, she thought. Hopefully, that snake-tribe beastman will hear them too. That way, he might think twice before taking revenge—and even if he does, he’ll have to consider the consequences.
What she forgot was that in the world of beastmen, they weren’t afraid of conflict. When a real boundary was crossed, a beastman would fight to the bitter end—even if they knew they couldn’t win. A simple rumor wouldn’t be enough to scare them off.
Ran Xiayue talked until her mouth was dry, but the squirrel sub-beastman in front of her just tilted his head and blinked those big, clear, watery eyes. “I know. Kyle already told me. Brown was the one who walked you back afterward, right?”
Bai Tang wasn’t stupid. He wasn’t about to fall into Ran Xiayue’s trap and repeat the original plot—misunderstanding Kyle, forcing him to become her mate, and then gradually falling in love with her through spending time together.
“Don’t be fooled by Kyle’s cold face—he’s warm-hearted underneath. Of course he’d help if he saw a female in danger in the forest. Oh, and if I remember correctly, wasn’t it Kyle who rescued you from the forest last time too?”
Bai Tang’s few simple words made everything about Ran Xiayue’s situation clear. As her face darkened, he added sweetly, “You really shouldn’t go into the forest alone—it’s so dangerous.”
Upon hearing that, the nearby onlookers started murmuring to themselves.
That’s right—why was Ran Xiayue always going into the forest alone? It wasn’t like a beastman just happened to be passing by every time. They had invited her to join them on food-gathering trips before, but she always refused. So why was she suddenly going into the forest to dig up food now?
Pretending. Totally pretending.
That word suddenly popped into the minds of the sub-beastmen and females present.
Is this what the Beast God’s messenger meant by being two-faced?
Yes. In addition to teaching everyone how to preserve food and build houses, Bai Tang was also teaching them how to write. Now that their material needs were being met, culture couldn’t be left behind either.
“Are you done? If you are, please move aside—I still have to deliver fruit milk to the little ones.” Bai Tang wore an expression of pure innocence, so sincere it made Ran Xiayue’s teeth ache. But with no good excuse to hold him up, she had no choice but to step aside.
The beastmen’s houses didn’t originally have doors—just a piece of animal hide hung up to block the wind.
When Bai Tang entered, he found the little cat-fox and Vos wrapped up in a passionate embrace, so entangled they hadn’t even noticed someone had come in.
Bai Tang’s face instantly burned. This kind of steamy scene was something he had never seen before. In the past, the male lead wouldn’t even let him watch those kinds of videos.
He quickly turned his back. “Ahem, ahem…”
Bai Chuansu snapped out of his daze, flustered as he pushed Vos away and adjusted the animal hide around himself.
Vos, of course, had noticed Bai Tang entering—he just hadn’t wanted to waste the rare opportunity. Su Su had been entirely focused on the cubs lately, completely ignoring his mate.
Whenever Vos wanted to get affectionate, one cub would wake up, another would be hungry, or one would start crying. And Su Su adored children—he even slept beside them every night.
Vos gritted his teeth. Kids are the worst—the ultimate romance killers!
“Oh, Vos is here too.”
Vos gave Bai Tang a curt nod in greeting.
“Tang Tang, you’re here~” Bai Chuansu’s voice was a little hoarse as he took the fruit milk Bai Tang handed over.
Bai Tang gave him a cheeky wink. “Things seem to be going well between you two~”
“N-No, it’s not like that~” The little cat-fox’s face turned red, and he wished he could find a hole to crawl into.
Vos, completely unbothered, stepped up and wrapped his arms around Bai Chuansu from behind, planting a kiss on his ear. “How about roasted whole lamb tonight?”
In the beastman world, sheep were called bleating beasts, named after the baa baa sounds they made.
Bai Chuansu nodded quickly, “Mm-hmm.”
With his sneak-kiss successful, Vos left for the forest in a great mood.
“Ooooh~” Bai Tang teased. “He kicked you out, huh? Su Su, you forgave him so quickly? You should’ve made him suffer a little…”
Bai Tang then shared a few tactics the system had taught him for dealing with partners.
While opening the fruit to feed the cubs, Bai Chuansu replied softly, “But… I just can’t bear to. If the Demon Lord’s upset, it makes my heart ache.”
Author’s Note :
I was going to post an extra chapter today, but when I looked at the time… the author made a “gu gu gu” (pigeon cooing = procrastination) sound. So today’s second update… didn’t happen. [shrugs]
