Chapter 162 – The Wolf King’s Naughty Little Wife – Three Beastman Baby Eggs (08)
Kyle passed through a part of the forest where a group of beastmen were enthusiastically digging up sweet potatoes. The sub-beastmen were working efficiently too. The beastmen had several oversized baskets on the ground — they weren’t exactly pretty, but they were practical and just right for holding the sweet potatoes.
“Kyle’s here!”
“Kyle…”
The beastmen paused their work to greet Kyle.
“Hey, these sweet potato things are filling, but they taste awful,” one of the beastmen said. He had bitten into one when he dug it up earlier — it tasted like dirt.
“Squeak squeak squeak—” Sweet potatoes aren’t meant to be eaten like that!
The little squirrel in Kyle’s arms protested. You could eat sweet potatoes raw, but they tasted much better cooked.
That beastman didn’t know anything — how dare he say they were bad! Hmph, he remembered that one. When it came time to cook dinner for everyone tonight, he definitely wasn’t giving that guy any.
Ever since Bai Tang turned back into a squirrel, he had become much more childish. He scratched at the fur lining angrily, puffing with frustration — only Kyle could feel the movement in his chest.
Once Kyle had walked a bit farther away, Bai Tang immediately wriggled out from the fur and scurried up a tree trunk.
“Squeak squeak squeak—” You go hunting, I’ll play in the trees.
Kyle looked around. This area wasn’t deep in the forest, and the grass on the ground was lush. Most of the creatures that came here were gentle, herbivorous beasts, so it was relatively safe.
“Tang Tang, just play around here. I’ll come back to find you.”
“Squeak squeak squeak~” Got it~
After Kyle left, Bai Tang swung and played in the trees. The system called out beside him, “Too high, too high… Ah—Tang Tang, stop! There’s a salt lake nearby!”
Salt?!
Bai Tang stopped swinging and followed the system’s guidance to a salty lake.
He tasted a bit, and a bitter, salty flavor overwhelmed him.
Bai Tang turned back into his human form, sticking out his tongue. “So salty, so salty… Water…”
The system quickly pulled out a bottle of mineral water. Bai Tang chugged down half the bottle before finally stopping. “Why is it so salty?”
“Tang Tang, we’ve got salt now!” the system suddenly exclaimed excitedly.
“Oh, right! You’re amazing, Qiu’er!” Bai Tang lit up the moment the system reminded him. The bitterness lingering in his mouth didn’t bother him anymore.
Where there’s water, there’s bound to be ingredients. Soon, Bai Tang found mushrooms and potatoes nearby, along with a clay-like substance.
According to the system, once this kind of soil is fired, it becomes even harder than brick — a perfect material for building houses. What a lucky surprise!
“Tang Tang?”
Bai Tang had just finished filling a basket with mushrooms and potatoes when he heard someone calling him. He turned around — and to his surprise, it was the fox tribe sub-beastman he hadn’t seen in ages.
“Su Su~!” Bai Tang ran over joyfully. This was his very first good friend in the beastman world.
“Su Su, what are you doing here?”
According to the map, the snake tribe was quite far from here, and this forest wasn’t one of their usual hunting grounds.
The smile on Bai Chuansu’s face faded. His affectionate eyes turned red, and his nose twitched as large, pearl-like tears began to fall.
“I-I lost the beastman baby eggs. The D-Demon Lord got mad, and I-I came out to look for them…”
It turned out that after Bai Chuansu and Bai Tang parted ways, Bai Chuansu had used his bloodline connection with the Demon Lord to locate him, and arrived at the snake tribe that very night.
Lone sub-beastmen or females were always welcomed by the tribe — it meant there was a high chance they would bond with a single beastman and give birth to beastman babies, continuing the bloodline. So when Bai Chuansu arrived, even the snake tribe beastmen — who were usually called cold-blooded — showed great enthusiasm.
And Bai Chuansu successfully found his beloved Demon Lord — the snake tribe leader, Vos.
Fox tribe beastmen were naturally beautiful, and Bai Chuansu immediately became the center of attention. Unfortunately for the others, he only had eyes for the tribe leader and kept chasing after him, which left many single beastmen heartbroken.
Although Vos was the snake tribe leader, he had always lived a solitary life. Suddenly having someone tailing him everywhere made him uncomfortable — everything felt inconvenient and awkward.
So, in order to shake off this “little tail,” Vos assigned Bai Chuansu to guard the tribe’s beastman baby eggs with the other sub-beastmen.
Unexpectedly, while the others were out hunting, and the remaining sub-beastmen went off to eat before their shift change, Bai Chuansu — still weakened from his time travel — dozed off.
During that time, the tribe was attacked by Makku Eagles — a kind of eagle that feeds on beastman eggs. In the end, three beastman baby eggs were taken.
When Vos returned, he was furious. Beastman cubs were incredibly important to the tribe, and because Bai Chuansu had been careless, three of them had been lost.
Bai Chuansu was scolded to tears and felt deeply guilty. So, he set off on his own to find the stolen eggs.
After hearing the little cat-fox’s story, Bai Tang was shocked. Could those three missing beastman baby eggs be the same ones the original story’s female protagonist found?
“I-I’m afraid the beastman babies… were… eaten… Waaaah~” Just imagining those adorable cubs dying because of his mistake made Bai Chuansu cry uncontrollably.
“Qiu’er, can you track down the whereabouts of those three eggs?” Bai Tang asked the system, lips pressed together.
“Leave it to me.” The system pounded its chest and pulled up the map.
Bai Tang gently helped Bai Chuansu sit under a tree and wiped away his tears. “It’s okay, I’ll help you find the eggs.”
“Tan-Tang… T-Thank you…” The cat-fox sub-beastman hiccupped, his eyes swollen and red from crying.
“Found them. Those three beastman baby eggs are in the forest. Follow me,” the system said.
“Let’s go find the eggs.”
Bai Chuansu had finally stopped crying, and Bai Tang immediately set off with him to the Makku Eagles’ old nest. They had to get there and retrieve the three eggs before the eagles could eat them.
The Makku Eagles’ nest was on a tall mountain to the east of the forest. Both Bai Tang and Bai Chuansu were agile. When they reached the foot of the mountain, they looked up at the towering peak, nodded to each other, then one transformed into a little squirrel and the other into a little cat-fox, and they began climbing.
“Squeak squeak squeak—! Over there.”
The little squirrel sat on the little cat-fox’s back, directing the way.
Thanks to the system’s map, they quickly found the Makku Eagles’ old nest. The three snake tribe baby eggs were safely resting on a grass pile, with no sign of the eagles.
“While the Makku Eagles aren’t here, grab the snake eggs and leave,” the system urged, watching the red dot on the map. “The Makku Eagles are rushing back — hurry.”
Besides shapeshifting, the little cat-fox could barely use any other magic. The little squirrel took out its basket from its small pocket dimension to carry the three beastman eggs.
They didn’t put the eggs inside the pocket dimension because it could only hold inanimate objects, not living things. If the beastman eggs were put inside, the babies inside would suffocate and die.
“It’s coming back!”
Just as the system finished speaking, a huge black shadow appeared at the entrance of the cave.
The Makku Eagle folded its wings and fixed its sharp eyes on the intruders inside the cave. When its gaze landed on the eggs in the basket held by the little cat-fox, it flew into a rage. D*mn fox and squirrel, how dare they try to steal its food!
The Makku Eagle extended its sharp claws, swiping at the little cat-fox. The little cat-fox used its agility to dodge left and right, narrowly avoiding the attacks. The little squirrel, with its small and nimble body, leapt onto the eagle’s head and jabbed its sharp claws into the eagle’s eyes.
The Makku Eagle yelped in pain, letting out a sharp cry. It grew stronger, and with a powerful flap, its wings nearly filled the entire space. Unable to see clearly, it attacked wildly. The little cat-fox was hit by the wings, causing the basket holding the eggs to fall out of the cave and tumble down the mountain.
The beastman baby eggs rolled out of the basket. The little cat-fox’s eyes widened as it jumped after them, curling its limbs around the three eggs, holding them close to its chest with its back down and face up while falling.
One life for three — well worth it. It wished it could personally return the beastman eggs to the Demon Lord, but that seemed impossible now. Still, it knew that even if it died, Tang Tang would help deliver the eggs back to the snake tribe.
Demon Lord, I’m sorry. I messed up. I can’t stay with you until the end in this world. I know I was wrong — please don’t blame me…
“Squeak squeak squeak—! Su Su!”
The little squirrel raced down the mountain as fast as it could, but it still couldn’t outrun the falling little cat-fox.
Plants in the mountain crevices suddenly grew, and the trees on the slope slowed the little cat-fox’s fall by catching its branches, but still couldn’t hold it.
The little squirrel flopped down the mountain like a pancake, determined to support Su Su.
Something snagged its fur. The little cat-fox opened its eyes and howled, “Awoo~”
“Squeak squeak squeak…”
Bai Tang climbed in front of Bai Chuansu and curled around the three eggs. With two soft pads protecting them from front and back, the eggs were absolutely safe.
“Awooo—”
Suddenly, an angry roar came from somewhere. Two little creatures along with the three eggs were caught by a winged wolf, circling the mountain as it flew, before finally landing smoothly on the ground.
As soon as they reached the ground, Kyle transformed back into his human form and firmly spanked the little squirrel’s bottom several times.
“Don’t be naughty. Didn’t I tell you to stay in the forest and play?”
“Squeak squeak squeak—” Bai Tang squeaked in pain.
Kyle’s face darkened, unmoved by the squirrel’s cries.
Only he knew how terrified he had been when he saw Bai Tang falling through the air. If he had been any slower, he would have lost Tang Tang.
Bai Tang changed back to human form, tears streaming down his face. “It hurts… it really hurts…”
“Do you know what you did wrong?” Kyle asked sternly.
“I was wrong, Kyle, I was wrong…” Bai Tang sobbed pitifully, his bottom already red from the spanking.
“What exactly did you do wrong?”
“I—I shouldn’t have run out of the forest… it hurts, please stop, it hurts…” Bai Tang burst into tears.
The pain landed on Bai Tang’s body, but Kyle felt it deep in his heart.
Kyle pulled him tightly into his arms, still shaken from the image of Bai Tang nearly falling to his death.
His hands were still trembling, and hot tears fell onto Bai Tang’s shoulder.
“I was so scared. I almost lost you…”
Kyle hugged Bai Tang tightly, wishing he could fuse him into his very bones and blood — then Tang Tang wouldn’t run off and leave him anymore.
“Kyle, I’m sorry…” The little squirrel knew he was wrong, but if given the choice again, he would still jump down to save Su Su. He still had Qiu’er and his powers — there was no way he’d die from a fall.
“You’re red, let me check.” Kyle calmed down and inspected Bai Tang’s sore bottom.
Bai Tang’s face flushed deeply. He covered his rear with both hands. “It’s… it’s fine now, doesn’t hurt anymore.”
Being looked at like that by Kyle felt like those times when they checked each other after, well, you know… and Su Su was there watching too.
Oh right, Su Su!
Bai Tang glanced sideways. The little cat-fox lay on the ground with eyes closed, still curled protectively around the beastman baby eggs.
Bai Chuansu: Actually, I’m awake, just too embarrassed to open my eyes. Dog food tastes awful. Demon Lord, A Su misses you~
Author’s note:
Bai Chuanxu: I’m back to remind you I exist~
Bai Tang: Chuansu, come live with me in the winged wolf tribe’s big house.
Bai Chuansu (nodding): Okay, okay!
Kyle (feeling wronged): What about me?
Bai Tang: You sleep in the guest room!
