Ears Perked Up in Anger
Lu Congxing was too busy being angry to notice anything until He Zhouyan knelt on one knee and reached out his right hand to tease him. Only then did he realize that Ma Fu had been captured.
“Chirp?” He tilted his head, one ear perking up curiously while the other drooped obediently.
Ma Fu let out a weak whimper of surrender. In the presence of an ancient Bai Ze, he dared not act out. The sheer pressure of the aura surrounding him made him want to curl up into a tiny ball.
The human face on the tiger’s body was covered in snot, tears, and scorch marks. On that eerie and ugly face, it sobbed like an infant.
Lu Congxing had no idea why this Bai Ze had suddenly passed by in the middle of the night, but it was a good thing that he had helped capture Ma Fu.
Still, Lu Congxing was a little afraid that He Zhouyan might mistake him for an ordinary demon and let him go.
It turned out that the saying “Ancient Bai Ze knows all things” wasn’t just something to trick children. With just a single glance at Ma Fu, He Zhouyan’s expression turned impatient, and his pale blue eyes carried a hint of cold indifference.
Ma Fu desperately wanted to protest against Bai Ze’s blatant favoritism, but he didn’t dare to say a word. Instead, he could only whimper pitifully in an attempt to gain sympathy.
It only made him more annoying.
The coldness in He Zhouyan’s eyes deepened. Without hesitation, he pulled out a small, hollow golden bell and trapped Ma Fu inside. The moment he formed a hand seal, the tiny bell floated into the air.
It flew straight toward the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs.
Lu Congxing tilted his head back to follow the bell’s trajectory, but his newly adapted body wasn’t quite used to movement. He wobbled—then tumbled over.
Four little paws flailed in the air.
Because he had no visible neck, he looked like a fluffy snowball with four tiny paws sticking out.
Not only did He Zhouyan not help, but he even reached out and poked Lu Congxing’s soft belly.
The fluffy texture felt exactly like that little puppy from yesterday—just as warm and soft.
Furious, Lu Congxing clung to He Zhouyan’s finger with his tiny paws, refusing to let go. He even used the leverage to flip himself back over.
He Zhouyan’s thin lips parted slightly. “So round.”
At the same time, his now-free hand, which had been holding Ma Fu moments ago, pinched Lu Congxing’s small, round rabbit tail.
You’re round! Your whole family is round!
Enraged, Lu Congxing turned and bit the man’s wrist.
Just like when he was in his puppy form, he used all his strength—but failed to leave so much as a bite mark.
The amusement in He Zhouyan’s eyes was unmistakable, making Lu Congxing even angrier. He let out a series of indignant chirps.
Even his floppy ears perked up in anger.
What “Bai Ze who knows all things”? He couldn’t even see through me! He didn’t even realize I was a demon!
At that thought, Lu Congxing’s mood improved slightly. His perked-up ears slowly drooped back down, and his round little tail twitched smugly.
He Zhouyan suddenly froze.
For a brief moment, a crisp, youthful scoff echoed in his mind.
But the sound was too fleeting, too quick. By the time he tried to focus on it again, it had already vanished.
As a Bai Ze, he possessed the ability to perceive the hearts of all beings and empathize with them. However, listening to countless thoughts all the time was far too noisy. Thousands of years ago, he had sealed away that ability.
Occasionally, though, he would still hear stray thoughts.
Yet at this moment, aside from himself, the only other being nearby was this little rabbit.
For the first time, the great Bai Ze, who knew all things, revealed a trace of doubt in his eyes.
Lu Congxing remained blissfully unaware that he had nearly exposed himself. Seeing He Zhouyan momentarily distracted, he immediately hopped away.
But before he could get far, He Zhouyan easily caught up.
The man, dressed in a suit and exuding a calm and steady aura, seemed to be in an excellent mood and had nothing to do, so he followed a little rabbit for a stroll under the starlight.
The rabbit being followed, however, was not in a good mood.
No matter how fast he hopped, the man only had to take a single step with his long legs to close the distance effortlessly.
Just as Lu Congxing was about to turn back and bite him again, Di Jiang finally arrived.
In reality, Di Jiang had been running over for a while. However, the oppressive aura He Zhouyan released earlier when sending Ma Fu to the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs had been overwhelming. As a lesser demon, Di Jiang had been so terrified that he instinctively reverted to his original form.
Di Jiang’s true form resembled a large, winged meatball. He had no facial features but possessed an extra pair of wings and three legs on each side. When he moved, he looked oddly clumsy and bulky.
Now that He Zhouyan had retracted his aura, Di Jiang finally dared to transform back into human form.
If it weren’t for the cub, he wouldn’t have come near this Bai Ze even if someone paid him.
With a strained smile and trembling legs, Di Jiang pointed at the tiny lop-eared rabbit on the ground. “G-Greetings, sir. This… this is my rabbit.”
With a single glance, He Zhouyan could tell Di Jiang was lying.
This rabbit wasn’t his.
However, there was indeed a connection between them. The moment the rabbit saw Di Jiang, it immediately became much more well-behaved—far more so than when dealing with him.
Suppressing a faint sense of irritation, He Zhouyan nodded slightly. He had no interest in stealing someone else’s rabbit.
Di Jiang wasted no time scooping up the tiny rabbit and bolting away, his speed fast enough to win an Olympic medal.
. . . . .
“My little ancestor! How did you end up with Lord Bai Ze?” Di Jiang nearly wept. Even now, his hands and feet still trembled at the memory of that man’s overwhelming presence.
This was precisely why all demons feared Bai Ze. As an ancient divine beast, Bai Ze possessed a unique aura that no other sacred beast had.
Lesser demons couldn’t even meet his gaze without accidentally reverting to their original forms out of fear.
He was also the most troublesome demon for the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs—not because he followed an evil path, but simply because he was too powerful to control.
Lu Congxing, now back in his human form, wore a delicate but expressionless face, remaining silent.
He was still very angry.
Though, unlike when he was in his cub form, he didn’t express it so blatantly.
He pulled out his phone to play a match-three game, but accidentally lost his 24-win streak.
As expected, nothing good ever happened when that person was around. Lu Congxing put his phone down again.
Di Jiang glanced at his watch and suddenly exclaimed, “Wait, you just turned into a rabbit two hours ago, and now you’re back? Is your unstable period almost over?”
Lu Congxing said nothing. He knew it was all thanks to that bad Bai Ze.
Just as Star Disk had predicted, he and Bai Ze had an extremely high compatibility. As long as he stayed near him, his unstable period would be significantly shortened.
Di Jiang rambled on for a bit longer until the panda-shaped alarm clock in the house suddenly rang.
It was already 11:30 PM.
This was an alarm clock specifically issued by the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs for cubs, ensuring they got enough sleep by reminding them to go to bed.
No matter how many questions Di Jiang still had, once the alarm rang, he had no choice but to shut up and go home.
Otherwise, that panda alarm clock would transform into a Kung Fu Panda and physically kick him out. It carried the aura of the Bureau Director, meaning Di Jiang would stand no chance.
After Di Jiang left, the panda alarm clock wobbled as the cub went into the bathroom to wash up.
Once the cub was in bed, the clock staggered over, tugged the blanket up over him, then settled itself on the nightstand, pretending to be just an ordinary alarm clock.
Lu Congxing felt irritated.
It was like an unbeatable game level—he couldn’t stop thinking about it. Every time he closed his eyes, He Zhouyan’s face, seemingly favored by the gods themselves, would appear in his mind.
He lifted his hand. In the darkness, his slender, pale fingers looked fragile, as if they could snap at any moment. Moonlight cascaded over them, lending them an inexplicable, almost cruel beauty.
But Lu Congxing’s face remained emotionless.
Every time he saw his own hands, he couldn’t help but think of his fluffy little paws—adorable, but utterly useless against evil ghosts.
Suddenly, an icy chill spread from beneath him.
A scratching sound echoed from under the bed, like someone hiding beneath it, clawing at the wooden boards.
His thoughts interrupted, Lu Congxing frowned and patted the bed in annoyance.
The scratching stopped, but the eerie atmosphere lingered. A chilling voice began humming a strange, unsettling tune:
“Back to back, back to back, back to back…”
The voice came from under the bed.
Completely unable to sleep now, Lu Congxing simply leaned over the edge and looked underneath.
“Ah! You found me!”
The female ghost’s mouth twisted into an unnatural grin as she stretched her neck forward, bringing her face right up to his, face-to-face.
Her body was completely contorted, her limbs bent at impossible angles, yet she remained pressed against the underside of the bed, her back still facing the bed frame.
She looked like a grotesque human spider.
The kind with a long neck and disheveled hair.
Lu Congxing’s expression grew complicated. His lips moved slightly, as if he had something to say.
The female ghost, brimming with confidence, assumed he was scared stiff.
“You’re so ugly.”
The ghost: …
A moment of silence passed as they stared at each other. Then, completely enraged, the ghost let out a piercing shriek.
“AHHHH! I’M GOING TO EAT YOU!”
Lu Congxing furrowed his brows slightly, a hint of worry appearing on his face. “Can you be quiet?”
He just wanted to sleep.
But his words had no effect whatsoever.
The female ghost let out a sinister smile, her twisted neck stretching forward again, aiming to bite into the delicious meal before her. However, in the next second, she was engulfed in ghostly blue flames.
The fire consumed only the ghost, leaving everything else untouched—not even the bed frame was harmed.
Soon, the entire ghost was burned to nothing. The flames shrank into a small wisp, floated back to Lu Congxing, gave a tiny satisfied burp, and rubbed against him affectionately.
He had long since grown used to this. Ever since he was a child, ghosts would come for him four or five times a week in his sleep. At first, he had been terrified, unable to sleep at all, but now, it barely fazed him.
After dealing with the ghost, Lu Congxing replaced the crooked talisman on the window with a fresh one. This time, when he lay down, there were no strange noises to disturb him.
But in his heart, an urgent feeling only grew stronger.
The unstable period was affecting him too much. While his cub form prevented ghosts from targeting him, it was ultimately inconvenient.
He closed his eyes and, for the first time, made a decision he had never considered before. Without any ghosts disturbing him, he finally drifted off to sleep.
