The single phrase “big brother-in-law” was like a fuse, igniting the fire of resentment that had been simmering in Dan Sihe’s heart toward He Yuchi.
“Sh*t up! I won’t easily agree to let Mo Mo be with you!” Dan Sihe slammed the table, making the coffee in the cup ripple.
“We live in an era of marriage freedom, big brother-in-law. Mo Mo and I love each other—it’s none of your business.” No matter how gentle and refined a person may seem, when someone touches their reverse scale, they can transform into a rampaging dinosaur.
“Don’t call me that! I said no, and that means no!”
“I’m going to call you that—big brother-in-law, big brother-in-law, big brother-in-law!”
At this moment, two future business tycoons were arguing like kindergarten children over a nickname.
As work hours rolled in, Dan Xiaowen noticed that He Yuchi had yet to return. Sneaking a glance at the bookstore next door, she saw that Bai Mo was already at his post. Figuring she’d try her luck, she went looking for He Yuchi—and, to her surprise, she actually found him.
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass window, she saw two incredibly handsome men with their sleeves rolled up, arguing fiercely. If not for the service staff constantly intervening, they probably would’ve already come to blows.
“Brother, Borther Yuchi, please don’t fight…” Dan Xiaowen rushed over to stop them. As she got closer, Dan Sihe suddenly turned around, his face dark with gloom, and stared at her.
“What did you just call us?”
Dan Xiaowen knew that Dan Sihe had never been fond of her and her mother. However, with their father growing old, the Dan Corporation was now essentially under Dan Sihe’s control. To ensure a comfortable life in high society, she had no choice but to put on a bright smile, even if it meant enduring cold treatment.
“Brother, Brother Yuchi, whatever the issue is, can’t you just talk it out? Fighting won’t look good…” She felt uneasy under Dan Sihe’s icy gaze, but she still forced herself to respond.
Dan Sihe curled his lips into a sneer and shot a sideways glance at He Yuchi. “‘Brother Yuchi… How familiar.” His tone was drawn out, dripping with sarcasm.
His eyes then landed on Dan Xiaowen’s uniform. Recognizing it as belonging to the newly opened tea house under his company, he raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t take the job at Dan Corporation and instead ran off to work for someone else—all for him?”
Their father had already given him instructions to arrange an easy position for Dan Xiaowen in the company. A mere freeloader wouldn’t be difficult for him to support, and he hadn’t even needed to offer—Dan Xiaowen had rejected the position herself.
For years, she and her mother had been eager to secure a place at the heart of the company. Yet, when given the perfect chance to gain access to power, she had turned it down.
Now that was interesting.
Dan Xiaowen froze for a moment, only belatedly realizing that Dan Sihe had misunderstood the situation. She cautiously glanced at her so-called brother’s expression. He didn’t seem displeased, but she couldn’t quite tell what he was thinking. Even so, she had no intention of clarifying the misunderstanding—if Dan Sihe’s support could bring her closer to He Yuchi, why not take advantage of it?
Feigning shyness, the young woman lowered her head slightly, exposing her slender, fair neck. “Brother, Brother Yuchi and I… we haven’t reached that stage yet.” Her words trailed off, filled with an unspoken tenderness.
Dan Sihe took a step back in disgust. “If you want to talk, then talk—but keep your distance. I’m not your brother, and we’re not close.”
He had only one sibling—Mo Mo. He had no sister.
“Miss Dan, I don’t know you well, and Brother Yuchi is not for you to call. Please have some self-respect.” He Yuchi ruthlessly shattered Dan Xiaowen’s scheme. Dan Sihe already didn’t like him—if this so-called big brother-in-law started spreading nonsense in front of Mo Mo, what if Mo Mo decided to move out? That would be a disaster.
“I…” Dan Xiaowen’s sweet smile almost faltered. Neither man was giving her any face.
What was going on? He Yuchi had always been warm and polite, and while Dan Sihe never liked her, he had never openly mocked her like this. Where had she gone wrong?
“Brother Yuchi, and you call that ‘not close’?” Dan Sihe sneered.
“I can’t control her mouth, but I don’t acknowledge it.” He Yuchi’s expression was ice-cold.
Just as it seemed the two were about to argue again, Dan Xiaowen unexpectedly felt relieved. She assumed they were still harboring residual anger and had taken it out on her.
She was about to step in to mediate when He Yuchi suddenly denied her the chance to display her innocence and understanding nature. Instead of continuing his argument with Dan Sihe, he picked up his coat from the chair and headed for the door.
“I’m a taken man, Miss Shan. Please conduct yourself properly.”
The speed at which he cut ties was so swift it caught everyone off guard.
Dan Xiaowen flushed with embarrassment and anger. Bystanders whispered and pointed at her, their words filled with speculation—accusing her of being a mistress or worse. Even with her thick skin, the repeated humiliation and ridicule were too much to bear.
“What did I do to offend you? You’ve gone too far!” she snapped, shoving He Yuchi before covering her face and running out.
Dan Sihe smirked. “You really have no sympathy for a beauty in distress.”
Though his words suggested disapproval, a flicker of satisfaction flashed in his eyes.
He Yuchi smiled, gentle as jade. “I simply stated the facts.”
Meanwhile, Bai Mo, happily working at the bookstore, had no idea that the male lead, female lead, and second male lead were turning the world upside down over him. Xiao Bobao watching from afar had seen everything but chose to keep quiet.
What was the point of talking? It wouldn’t affect Mo-mo anyway. Watching the female lead fume and distort in anger was quite entertaining.
Xiao Bobao mentally gave He Yuchi and Dan Sihe a “V” sign, hoping they would keep up the good work—ideally, they could deal with her once and for all, so she wouldn’t keep stirring up trouble every few days and becoming an eyesore.
After confirming that Bai Mo was indeed the long-lost Xiao Nian, Dan Sihe underwent a complete personality shift—becoming warm and affectionate, as if he had taken on a new character setting.
Following the principle of “if the mountain won’t come to me, I’ll go to the mountain,” he showed up at the He family’s house every day for meals. Ning Ning was so frustrated he could gnash his teeth, but he was powerless to stop it.
The human heart is never satisfied. After being rejected for the eighth time when inviting Bai Mo to stay at his place, Dan Sihe resorted to playing the pity card with Mother He.
He lamented about spending two years abroad, how his home had been taken over by that mother-daughter duo, how the old man didn’t care about him, and how there was no place for him in his own house. His words moved Mother He to tears, and with a decisive slap of her palm, she declared that he would stay. After all, this was her best friend’s child—her godson! How could she let outsiders bully him?
Watching as the He household grew increasingly lively with more and more people, Father He smiled in satisfaction. He chose not to get involved in the “war” that had escalated into a heated battle between He Yuchi and Dan Sihe.
When people grow old, they simply enjoy having the younger generation laugh and play around them. This—this was true family happiness.
Ever since Dan Sihe moved into the He household, Ning Ning instinctively aligned himself with He Yuchi. It was already bad enough that his big brother was trying to take Brother Mo away, but now there was also Brother He? And this Brother He always liked sticking close to Brother Mo!
